  • Objective : This study aims to identify the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers and their correlations to the demographic factors that influence them, and to verify the adequacy of the hypothetical model, constructed based on vision, auditory, cognition, motor, and psychological factors, in order to present a path model on the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers. Methods : The participants in this study were 122 elderly drivers aged 65 years or older residing in the community. This study evaluated the following factors of the participants: Vision and hearing, motor ability, cognitive ability, depression, self-reported driving abilities. Results : The results of this study are as follows. In the case of men, the self-reported driving ability score was higher than for women, and those driving 6-7 days per week had higher scores than those driving 3 days or less. The period of holding a driver's license and driving experience positively correlated with self-reported driving abilities. The final model of factors influencing the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers had a p value (.911) exceeding .05; TLI (1.202), NFI (.949), and CFI (1.000) of over .90; and RMSEA (.000) of lower than 0.1, indicating that the hypothesis model fit the data well. First, the directly influential factors on the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers were depression, decreased hearing, and grip strength. Second, age was found to have a direct influence on depression and grip strength; moreover, depression and grip strength as a mediator indirectly influenced their self-reported driving abilities. Third, depression was found to have a direct influence on their delayed cognitive processing and grip strength. Conclusion : The significance of this study is in the identification of direct and indirect factors influencing the self-reported driving abilities of elderly drivers in regional communities, and in the verification of multi-dimensional effects of diverse factors influencing such abilities.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of color stimuli on the grip power and the pinch power. Methods : For this experimental study, total 59 healthy college students, who were divided into Red color group and Green color group. Each group was assessed before and after color stimuli(10minutes). Subjects were for using standardized positioning with shoulder adducted and neutrally rotated, elbow flexed at 90 degree and the forearm and wrist in neutral position. Results : All the two groups showed significant differences in the variation of grip power and pinch power under color stimuli(P>.05) but there was no significant variation in grip power and pinch power among groups. Conclusion : This study precedes following study which is focused on the proposal of suitable or appropriate color circumstance for treatment room. Further studies are need with more subjects on long-term outcome.

  • As a preliminary study of finding the relationship between the force at the grip and the success rate during putting stroke, the putting grip sensor system using FSR sensors was developed. The system consisted of the hardware which had the sensor part with 8 sensors per putting glove and data acquisition part as well as the software which had the real-time monitoring program and the offline post-processing program. After experiments with elite-golfer using this system, it is possible to suggest the proper force ranges at the grip during putting stroke.

  • Transplanting process during the tissue culture of potato seedlings is costly, since the cost of highly skilled labor working in the sanitary environment takes up about 60-70% of the production cost. The objective of this study was to develop a soft gripper of a transplanting robot system for the labor-saving tissue culture. The prototype of the soft gripper was consisted of power-transmitting part finger and plant contacts. The power transmitting part transformed the rotating motion of a step motor to the reciprocating motion of the finger. Plant stems used in the test were potato seedlings cultured for six weeks. The dimensional characteristics of cultured seedlings, the compressive strengths of the stems, the extractive force from the culture medium and the gripping force of the finger were measured. A proper gripping force was found to be 0.343N at the extractive force of 0.41N when the plant contacts were made of silicon. Sixteen plants out of 70 trials were tangled with others, resulting in the success rate of 77.1%.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between electroencephalography (EEG) and strength, using grip strength. 64-channel EEG data were recorded from five healthy subjects in tasks requiring handgrip contractions of nine levels of MVC (Maximal Voluntary Contraction). We found the ERS (Event-Related Synchronization)/ERD (Event-Related Desynchronization) at the measured EEG data using STFT (Short-Time Furier Transform) and spectral power in the EEG of each frequency range displayed in the graph. In this paper, we identified that the stronger we contracted, the greater the spectral power was increased in the ${\beta}$, ${\gamma}$ wave.

  • Grip strength is a very important basic data for ergonomic design of hand tools, grips, handles and etc.. Excessive grip strength is contineously exerted to handle the machines or tools, it might cause a musculoskeletal disorder such as cumulative trauma disorders. Capal tunnel syndrome is a typical nerve disorder anomg CTDs. In this paper we have measured the grip strength under sitting and standing posture for Korean adults ; 113 male and 105 female aged from 20' to the above 50' . And this paper performed statistical analysis for driving out characteristics between grip strength and anthropometric data. The results are as follows ; (1) The maximum girp strength is exerted under standing posture with the elbow in full extension(180 .deg. ) for both of male and female (2) There is significant difference in posture, sex and right left hand (3) Grip strength decreases with age for male, but it traces an inverted U curve for female (4) Grip strength has a correlation with age, weight, height, BSA, forearm length, hand length, thickness of wrist, circumference of wrist and breadth of wrist for male

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate initial effects of the non-elastic taping technique on grip strength and EMG in female with lateral epicondylalgia. METHODS: Twenty-two participants (mean age SD, $52.8{\pm}10.2$ years) with chronic lateral epicondylalgia (mean duration${\pm}$SD, $13.1{\pm}9.9$ months) participated in a placebo control study of an elbow taping technique. Outcome measures were pain-free grip and EMG taken before, immediately after application of tape. RESULTS: The experimental group were more significantly improved grip strength and muscle activity of forearm than control group. CONCLUSION: This study show that non-elastic taping technique is beneficial intervention for increase grip strength and EMG in female with lateral epicondylalgia.

  • In addition to accurate position and velocity control, force control is necessary for a successful robot operation. In this paper, we have designed a simple robot gripper using a DC motor. For its force control, a current feedback control law is presented without using additional force sensors. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control law. A digital controller is also developed with a TMS320LF2406 processor.

  • This study examines whether regular exercise moderates the relationship between hand grip strength and cognitive function in older adults. Older adults 65 and over from the third wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing Data were analyzed. A moderated multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the moderating effects of regular exercise on the relationship between hand grip strength and cognitive function. According to the results, regular exercise moderated the effects of hand grip strength on cognitive function, suggesting that regular exercise should be promoted for older adults to reduce unfavorable effects of a decrease in hand grip strength on cognitive function.
