This study was carried out to assess aerobic stabilized waste sludge as liquid fertilizer for the growth of cucumber, cabbage and chrysanthemum. Sludge was pretreated with NaOH(40 meq/L) at 40$^{\circ}C$ for 330 min. The number of fecal coliforms in batch test sludge fertilizer was more efficiently reduced than those in continuous one, maybe due to longer SRT. All produced fertilizer belonged to class B according to US EPA requirement at least. Among 6 heavy metals regulated in Korea, As, Cd and Hg were not detectable in plant amended with fertilizer whereas the concentration of Cr, Cu and Pb in plant was less than 10 mg/kg dw. However, Zn and Ni, which were restricted in other country, but not in Korea, were detected in most amount of 118 mg/kg and 15.7 mg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, based on dry weight of plant, digested sludge(5.4 mg, dw) functioned as better fertilizer rather than activated sludge (4.3 mg, dw), much more fertile when those sludge was pretreated(1.24 mg, dw) compared to untreated one(1.12 mg, dw). But its fertility was 60$\sim$80% of commercial fertilizer and accumulation of Zn, Ti and Cr in plant was founded. Therefore, it could be concluded that sludge-fertilizer can be used for flower unlimitedly, but for edible plant limitedly as additive fertilizer.
Microbial control of the geochemical behavior of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) and As in contaminated subsurface soil and sediment was investigated through activation of indigenous bacteria with lactate under anaerobic condition for 25 days. The results indicated that dissolved Cd, Pb and Zn were microbially removed from solutions, which was likely due to the formation of metal sulfides after reduction of sulfate by indigenous sulfate-reducing bacteria. Soils from the Dukeum mine containing a large amount of sulfate resulted in complete removal of dissolved As after 25 days by microbial activities, while there were gradual increases in dissolved As concentration in soils from the Hwabuk mine and sediments from the Dongducheon industrial area which showed low $SO_4{^2-}$ concentrations. Addition of appropriate carbon sources and sulfate to contaminated geological media may lead to activation of indigenous bacteria and thus in situ stabilization of the heavy metals; however, potential of As release into solution after the amendment should be preferentially investigated.
The lethal concentration(LC50) of several micropollutants for three species of the fish Paralichthys olivaceus, Mugil cephalus and Sebastes schlegeli were determined by acute toxicity tests. For the determination of definitive test concentrations, the fish were exposed to three test material concentrations spaced at order-of-magnitude intervals based on a logarithmic ratio in range finding tests. LC50 was determined by five concentrations of test material in a geometric progression by means of range finding tests. The 96hr-LC50 values(mg/l) were estimated by the graphical interpolation of probability-logarithm transformations. These indicated that the order of sensitivities to three kind of micropollutants was Mugil cephalus > Paralichthys olivaceus > Sebastes schlegeli.
This study was carried out to test the possibility of using an environmentally friendly method of leaching silver concentrate from the Samjo mine. The Samjo mine ore contained minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The concentrate samples tested with the thiourea solution were roasted at $750^{\circ}C$. The results of different experimental conditions showed that the highest silver leaching rate was obtained when the concentration of thiourea was at 0.8 g with ferric sulfate at 0.425 g and the leaching temperature at $60^{\circ}C$. The Ag leaching rate obtained was 91.5% at a pulp density of 10%. However, in the XRD analysis, peaks of pyrite, galena, and hematite were still found in the leached solid residues in which the Ag leaching rate was the highest. it is expected that the unrecovered silver in the solid residue can be lost.
We carried out a survey on tributary streams in some agricultural areas along Nakdong River to evaluate the effects of agricultural practices on pollution of stream water and groundwater. General properties, nutrient materials and heavy metals in water samples were measured. General physicochemical properties of tributary stream waters were at levels favorable for agricultural water. Heavy metals, except Zn, were mostly not detected. Total-N contents were much higher than the criteria of agricultural water, and nitrate-N accounts for more than a half of total-N. Phosphorus contents were higher than the lower level of P for algae growth and the contents were high especially in summer. In ground waters which are used for irrigation, P were mostly at same levels as those in streams, and nitrate contents were higher than 10mg/L in some samples. In these results only those N and P contents in stream and ground waters higher than pollution criteria are problematic and they are traceable to agricultural nonpoint sources-fertilizers, livestock farms and sewage. Further researches are needed to evaluate contributions of each nonpoint source on stream water pollutions.
This study was carried out to examine used as fertilizer on growth and yield of Gastache rugosa. The medicinal herbs('Yeonryeonggobondan') remnant which have prescriptions of high frequency by Korean was analyzed. The medicinal herbs remnant have high content of nitrogen, phosphoric acid, potassium and organic. The growth of Agastache rugosa by application of medicinal herbs remnants were more effective than that of control. As the amount of fertilizers were increased, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and number of branches were increased. The growth was the highest in the treatment of 30~50 g/pot. Weight of whole plant of Agastache rugosa has a tendency to be heavy in application of medicinal herbs remnant than that of control.

Gallium oxide nano-powder, the key starting material for IGZO target, is fabricated by gas phase synthesis using a new apparatus consist of reaction, transportation, and collection parts. As a result of gallium metal evaporation above 1150℃, Ga2O3 nano-powders, are successfully synthesized. The SEM images of the synthesized powders displace the spherical shaped powders without severe agglomeration. X-ray diffraction and PSA analysis show that the higher temperature at the reaction part results in the better crystallinity and larger powder size of the synthesized Ga2O3. To see the applicability to IGZO target, Ga2O3 nano-powders synthesized at 1250℃ are mixed with indium oxide and zinc oxide (In2O3 : Ga2O3 : ZnO = 1 : 1 : 1), and then sintered at 1400~1500℃. The highest sintered density of 5.83 g/㎤ (= 91 % of relative density) is achieved when sintered at 1450℃, showing better sinterability compared to the commercially available Ga2O3 powder, which has 5.61 g/㎤ of sintered density at the same condition.

The purpose of this research was to prove the excellency of unpolished (brown) rice with respect to nutritional composition and to compare chemical composition among six varieties of rice. Some nutritional composition in the Polished (well -milled) rice and unpolished (brown) rice of the six typical Korean varieties (Chucheong, Hwasung, Odae, Ilmi, Dongjin, Ilpum) were determined. Most of nutrients in the brown rice were much greater than those in the milled rice and there was significant difference among rice varieties in some chemical compositions. The major minerals of milled rices were Ca, 6~15 mg%;P, 91~125mg%;Fe, 0.3~1.2mg%; Na, 10~14mg%;K, 106~205 mg%; Zn, 1.0~1.8mg%; and Mg, 32~58 mg%. The mineral contents of brown rices wre Ca, 4~11mg%;P, 92~286mg%;Fe, 1.3~1.9mg%;Na, 12~15mg%;K, 243~320mg%;Zn, 1.5~2.3mg%;Mg, 112~140mg%. Major fatty acids in six rice varieties were linoleic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid, which comprised of about 93% of total fatty acid. Amino acid analysis showed that aspartic acid, glutamic acid, arginine and leucine were major amino acids, whereas histidine, threonine and tryptophan were minor ones of rice. Most ammo acid contents was higher in Ilmi than the other varieties. The contents of vitamin in brown rices were considerably higher than those in well-milled rice. There was not significant difference in total dietary fiber among rice varieties : 1.1~1.2% for milled rice,3.2~3.5% for brown rice.
The geochemical evolution of mine drainage and leachate from waste rock dumps and stream water in Pb-As-rich abandoned Sechang mine area was investigated to elucidate mechanisms of trace metals. Total and sequential extractions were applied to estimate the distribution of trace metals in constituent phases of the waste rocks and to assess the mobility of trace metals according to physicochemical conditions. These discharged waters varied largely in chemical composition both spatially and temporally, and included cases with significant]y low pH (in the range 2.1-3.3), and extremely sulphate (up to 661 mg/l and metal contents (e.g. up to 169 mg/l for Zn, 27 mg/l for As, 3.97 mg/l for Pb, 2.99 mg/l for Cu, and 1.88 mg/l for Cd). Arsenic and heavy metal concentrations at the down-stream of Sechang mine have been decreased nearly to the background level in downstream sites (sites 8 and 16) without any artificial treatments. The oxidation of Fe-sulfides and the subsequent hydrolysis, of Fe(II), with precipitation of poorly crystallized minerals, constituted an efficient mechanism of natural attenuation which reduces considerably the transference of trace metals (i.e. Fe and As) to rivers. The dilution of drainage by mixing with pristine waters provoked an additional decrease of trace metal concentrations and a progressive pH increase. On the other hand, the most soluble cations (i.e. Zn) remained significantly as dissolved solutes until the pH was raised to approximately neutral values. With respect to ecotoxicity, it is likely that the Zn pollution is of particular concern in Sechang mine area. This was confirmed by the sequential extraction experiment, where Zn in wet waste-rock samples occurred predominantly in the exchangeable fraction (65-89% of total), while Pb was the highest in the reducible and carbonate fractions, and Cd, Cu and As in the residual fraction. Pb concentration in the readily available exchangeable fraction (34-48% of total) was dominated for dried waste rock samples. Considering the proportion of metals bound to the exchangeable and carbonate fractions, the comparative mobility of metals probably decreased in the order of Zn>Pb>Cd>As=Cu.

To examine the contamination in Ulsan coastal area, some heavy metal concentrations in sea water and Mytilus coruscus have been measured. Sea water samples were collected on April 6 in 1995 and Mytilus coruscus samples were collected on April 2 in 1995. Total number of sea water samples was 26 and that of Mytilus coruscus was 54. The sites where the samples collected were same in sea water and Mytilus coruscus. The method of analysis was atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results indicated that the heavy metal concentrations of sea water were varied according to the sampling stations. The concentrations of cadmium, manganese, zinc in sea water collected in the coastal area near Mipo complex were higher than those of other coastal areas, and the concentrations of lead in sea water collected in the coastal area near petrochemical complex were higher than those of others. In general the concentrations of lead, zinc, copper in sea water were proportionate to those in Mytilus coruscus. The mean concentration rates of lead, cadmium, manganese in Mytilus coruscus inhabiting in Ulsan coastal area were similar, 1070, 1370 and 1300, respectively. The concentration rate of mercury was 80, the lowest value of other heavy metals, and that of copper was 6940, the highest value. Consequently it seems to be more desirable to use Mytilus coruscus as a sample to examine the contamination of coastal area than sea water.
