This study sought to clarify the relation of children's suicidal ideation and parental depression/life satisfaction, and the mediating effect of the self-esteem in child. With regard to suicidal ideation in children, most studies have used children's depression as predictor, not parental depression. Similarly, parental life satisfaction have not been included in spite of its general influence on child development. Relations among these variables were examined in 512 children and their parents in $7^{th}$ Korean welfare panel data using the structural equation model. Results showed that the maternal life satisfaction was the only significant factor affecting the suicidal ideation of children, no having the mediating effects of the self-esteem in child. The implication of these results and suggestions for intervention and prevention work, and future research are discussed.

Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness of EMLA cream on pain related to venipuncture among children. Methods: In this study, 48 children were evaluated using a sequential measurement for level of pain by Skin Conductance Level (SCL) based on Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), heart rate, and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at four times. Results: The maximum and mean of the SCL were each significantly different between the experimental and control groups and furthermore, the two were also significantly different among observed times. In addition there was a significant interaction between group and time. The children's perceived pain using VAS was not significantly different between the experimental and control groups. There was no significant difference in the heart rate between the experimental and control groups; however, the interaction between group and time was significant. Conclusion: In conclusion, applying topical anesthetic cream to the venipuncture site to reduce pain was effective among the children and therefore it is highly recommended that topical anesthetic cream be applied at the venipuncture site as a nursing intervention to reduce pain when a child has to undergo a venipuncture.
The purpose of this meta-analysis was to address two questions: (1) To what extent are types of child abuse related to psycho-social maladjustment of the abused? (2) Do relations found in this study vary by the gender, sample size, year of publication, types of publication, and respondents' age? The materials of this study were based on 14 variables obtained from 104 published and unpublished (doctoral disserations and master's theses) research papers over a span of 26 years(1990-2016). Child abuse related variables were categorized into physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and abuse while psycho-social maladjustment grouped as internal (anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and anxiety/depression) and external problem behaviors(aggression, problem behavior, and delinquency). Major findings were: Medium effect size of emotional abuse, abuse, physical abuse, neglect on psycho-social maladjustment among the abused were calculated. Emotional abuse was highly related to every internal and external problem behaviors. Neglect was found to have higher effect size in external problem behaviors than internal problem behaviors. Publication types moderated the association between types of child abuse and internalization while year of publication, number of samples and publication types showed moderation effects on the relation between types of child abuse and externalization. Finding suggest that future studies on child sexual abuse and those on intervention outcome are required and use of well validated instruments are essential.
This study examined the relationship between discrimination experienced by children of multicultural families and their psychological distress. As new minorities growing up with bicultural identities in Korean society, children from multicultural families are often exposed to racial discrimination and such experience often acts as a stressor in their everyday life. In order to examine the effect of discrimination on their psychological distress as well as the role of social support, a survey was conducted in 25 elementary schools in Daejeon city and Chungnam and Chungbuk province. Results indicated that children's experiences of discrimination significantly affected their psychological distress level that the more they were exposed to discrimination, the higher levels of depression and anxiety they experienced. Among social support domains, only peer support was found to be significantly related to both the experience of discrimination and their depression and anxiety levels. Supporting the social support deterioration model, the findings showed that more experiences of discrimination led to reduced peer support which in turn, increased the likelihood of being depressed and anxious. Peer support was also significant in partially mediating the discrimination-psychological distress relationship. Implications for social work practice with children from multicultural families are provided.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of verbal working memory and the spatial working memory on children's text comprehension. The reading span and the operation span of the reading deficient children were smaller than that of the reading normal children, but the two groups did not differ in the visual span. Reading deficient children got lower score in the comprehension tests than reading normal children, and the difference was larger for the expository text than the narrative text. The involvement of visual working memory in reading narrative texts were more directly tested in Experiment 2 by asking the children do a secondary memory task before they answered the comprehension test. Reading normal children suffered more under auditory secondary memory condition for both narrative and expository texts, whereas reading deficient children suffered under visual secondary memory condition for narrative texts as well. The results of the two experiments suggested that the spatial working memory can be involved in text comprehension process, especially with reading deficient children.

This study was to analyze the general trends and the effects of parent education programs in accordance with operating methods, contents, and goals by using meta-analysis. The subjects were the studies about the effects of education programs for parents who have young and school-aged children, 41 and 15 respectively. The results showed that the trends of the operating methods in both groups did not have many differences. Also, on the contents and goals of the programs, parenting related factor was treated the most in both groups. Second, the overall effects of the parent education programs were higher on those for parents with school-aged children than parents with young children. -When parents together, not separately, participated in program, the effect size was the largest. However, the effects of other operating methods factors like number of subjects, hours per session, and number of sessions showed inconsistent results. On the effects of contents and goals, the effect of self-system competency factor as psychological characteristics was the highest in the programs for parents with young children and the effect of parenting competency factor was the highest for the ones with school-aged children. This study has implications for providing basic data for developing effective programs for parents with young and school-aged children.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of parent - child interaction therapy on parenting skills and children's problem behaviors by meta - analysis and to provide a basis for intervention methods. Methods : This study was conducted from January 2007 to March 2018 and the study was conducted using the parent-child interaction program for children with disabilities. PubMed and CINAHL, EBSCOhost, Science Direct were used to search for studies, and reference searching was also conducted as a secondary search option. A total of 7 studies was selected to meet the selection criteria, and the final 7 studies were assessed by using the Jadad scale. Statistical tests were performed using the R-meta-analysis program. Results : The effect size of parenting skill was large and the size of the effect of parenting stress was moderate. The children's problem behaviors also showed moderate effect sizes and all p-values were statistically significant (p < .0001). Conclusion : This study examined the effects of parent-child interaction therapy on parenting skills, parenting stress, and children's problem behaviors. Future research is needed to establish the basis for intervention for family involvement in pediatric occupational therapy.
The purpose of this paper is to verify the mediating effect of peer relations and self-esteem in the relationship between the effects of deficiency of children using local children's centers on school life adaptation. The survey subjects were selected from 424 students in the first year of middle school who were used the local children's center, and analyzed using data from the 4th of the local children's center. Summarizing the analysis results, peer relationships were found to have a complete mediating effect in the relationship between deficiency and school life adaptation. Second, it was verified that self-esteem has a partial mediating effect in the relationship between deficiency and school life adaptation. Children using local children's centers experience deficiencies in various areas of society, but as can be seen from the results of this study, it was suggested that they can help adapt to school life by promoting self-esteem and peer relationships. Therefore, we would like to propose the development of programs and practical implications for promoting children's adaptation to school life, and the expansion of the field of children's research using local children's centers.
