  • This longitudinal study investigated developmental changes in temperament and examined social adjustment problems by early temperamental characteristics and developmental patterns of temperamental change during infancy. Subjects were 153 six-month-old infants and their mothers. Infant temperament and toddler's problem behavior were measured by the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (Garstein & Rothbart, 2003) and the Toddler Behavior Checklist (Larzelere et al., 1989), respectively. Results showed that distress to limitations, high pleasure, perceptual sensitivity, and approach increased with age, while activity level, cuddliness, and vocal reactivity decreased. Infants with high scores in activity level, fear, sadness, and approach at 6 months showed more problem behaviors at 18 months. Infants showing abrupt developmental change of high pleasure and perceptual sensitivity developed more negative behavior.

Subjects were 174 mothers of 4~6 year-old children, and they answered questionnaires regarding coparenting, marital quality, personality, and initial temperatment of their children. For mothers of both boys and girls, positive marital quality wass related positively to warmth, support, and integrity coparenting and negatively to conflict coparenting. Only for mothers of girls, higher warmth and integrity coparenting was shown when they were extroverted. while those who were neurotic showed higher conflict coparenting. For mothers of boys, support coparenting was low when their sons were emotional. Mothers of girls showed lower level of warmth and integrity coparenting when their daughters were avoidant. emotional and sensitive.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between mothers's and children's characteristics, maternal separation anxiety, and overprotective parenting with a sample of 212 mothers of 3-6 year-old children. The subjects reported maternal separation anxiety, children's initial temperament, their own experience in the childhood and personality, and overprotectiveness. The results indicated that 1) mothers who experienced higher parental acceptance showed higher maternal separation anxiety; 2) mothers who perceived that their children had avoidant temperament showed higher material separation anxiety; 3) mothers who showed higher separation anxiety reported higher overprotectiveness; 4) maternal separation anxiety played a mediating role in the relations between children's approach-avoidance temperament and mothers' sheltering behavior.

  • This study examined the relationship between children's temperament and their early vocabulary acquisition. Mothers of 317 toddlers (18 months of age) completed the Toddler Temperament Scale(Bak, 1996) and a vocabulary checklist(Pae, 2002). Results showed that mood, adaptability, and activity were associated with vocabulary acquisition. Specifically, infants rated as having a positive mood and low activity level acquired more expressive words. On the other hands, infants rated as easily adaptive and low activity level acquired more receptive words. These results suggest that different components of temperament may influence the way in which toddlers acquire vocabulary.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether emotionality at age three predicts early school-age media overdependence and to examine the potential mediating role of internalizing behavior problems in children. Methods: This study employed data from the 4th and 10th waves of the Panel Study of Korea Children, comprising a sample of 1,270 children. Assessments of emotionality (4th wave), media overdependence (10th wave), and internalizing behavior problems (10th wave) were conducted. Data analysis utilized SPSS and the Process Macro. Results: At age 3, heightened emotionality was found to directly contribute to an increased tendency for media overdependence in early school age. Internalizing behavior problems played a significant mediating role in the relationship between emotionality and media overdependence. Conclusion/Implications: This study validated a significant longitudinal connection between emotionality and the inclination to excessively rely on media, highlighting the role of internalization behavior problems in this relationship. It is essential to provide focused attention, especially to children displaying heightened emotionality in early childhood, in order to proactively prevent internalization behavior problems and the undue dependence on media.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of infant temperament on adaptation at childcare centers and the moderated effects of teacher-infant relationships between a vertical transition group and horizontal transition group. Methods: The subjects of the study were 284 infants, aged 1-years-old and 2-years-old, who were hospitalized in childcare centers. To investigate the correlation between variables, Pearson correlation analysis was used. Regression analysis was performed to check the effects of temperament and teacher-infant relationship on childcare adaptation. Results: Infant temperament influenced childcare adaptation in both vertical and horizontal transition groups. The quality of teacher-infant relationships was found to moderate the relationship between infant temperament and childcare adaptation in both groups. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study, which showed different moderating effects of the teacher-infant relationship in the vertical transfer group and the horizontal transfer group, suggest the need for more diverse studies on the various transition experiences regarding childcare transition.

  • We studied the clinical characteristics of 45 children with tic symptoms, and a comparison was made according to their birth order patterns. The results were as follows. Sex ration was 14:1 higher for boys. The eldest children were 46.7%, single children, 15.6%, the youngest children, 33.3%, and twins 4.4% of all Organicity was suggested in 37.8%, early developmental problems in 71.1%, and family problems were in 89.9%. Among the co-existing problems, ADHD 46.7%, OCD 17.7%, Separation anxiety disorder 24.4%, GAD or anxiety dreams 17.8%, somatization disorder and enuresis 13.3% each, stuttering 8.9%, and other conditions. Overall, 84.4% of the patients have one or more co-existing conditions other than tic symptoms. When compared according to birth order patterns, the most significant difference was the time of onset The youngests have more incidences around the entrance period for elementary school(p<0.01). Among the twins, the lower birth-weight child was the patient. Summing up these findings, we concluded there were significant environmental factors working on the manifestation of tic and tourette disorders.
