  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's information processing ability and basic learning abilities. To collect the data, two tests were given to 99 children. The Korean K-ABC(Moon & Byun, 1997) and Pictorial Basic Learning Abilities for Children(Kim, 2011) were used to examine the relationship between children's information processing and basic learning abilities. The collected data were analyzed by correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. According to the results of this study, there was a significant positive correlation between information processing(sequential processing, simultaneous processing) and basic learning abilities including reading, writing, and basic mathematics. And information processing significantly affected basic learning abilities. Namely, simultaneous processing explained 22% of basic learning abilities and by adding sequential processing, the explanation was increased to 25%. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest various implications about children's basic learning abilities. These implications will help teachers and parents to understand their children's learning.

  • As an empirical test of a model of giftedness with learning disabilities (Song & Porath, 2011), this paper investigated domain thoughts of gifted students without learning disabilities and gifted students with learning disabilities (GLD) in reading, writing, and math. Gifted students in each group were interviewed and the data were analyzed for domain thoughts. The results showed that the former group of gifted students exhibited domain thoughts in a more balanced manner, whereas GLD students showed large discrepancies between domain thoughts; they showed weak specific domain thoughts in contrast to strong other domain thoughts. They also showed ambivalent attitudes even in a domain activity; they presented positive and negative thoughts at the same time. With a comprehensive explanation of the differences between the two groups of gifted students through a cognitive mechanism presented in the model of GLD model, this paper provides new approaches for identification and education of gifted students and GLD students.

  • Recently, domestic and international educational institutions and educational sites have been continuously trying to promote various educational policies and creating educational cases related to artificial intelligence. In addition, it is necessary to identify subjects and areas that require AI-based teaching and learning support in various situations such as large classes or non-face-to-face classes, and provide appropriate support accordingly. Currently, the gap in Korean language proficiency among students entering elementary school is very large depending on the literacy environment of their homes, and this gap in Korean language proficiency affects not only Korean language subjects but also all subjects, so appropriate teaching and learning support according to each student's writing ability is required. Therefore, in this study, we developed and applied a Korean language education app that utilizes AI voice recognition and text recognition functions to verify its effect on the writing ability of first-grade elementary school students. As a result of the study, we confirmed that the AI-based Korean language education app had a positive effect on improving the writing ability of first-grade elementary school students, and suggested a method that can be used for Korean language writing education in elementary schools.

  • This study investigated the development of geometrical thinking levels of the under achievers at mathematics through supplementary classes according to van Hiele's learning process by stages using mathematical journal writing. We selected five under achievers at mathematics among the fourth graders. We examined their geometrical thinking levels in advance and interviewed them to collect basic data related to their family backgrounds and their attitude toward mathematics and their characteristics. Supplementary classes for the under achievers were conducted a couple of times a week during 12 weeks. Each class was conducted through five learning stages of van Hiele and journal writing was applied to the last consolidating stage. After 12th class had been finished, posttest on geometrical thinking levels was conducted and the journals written by the pupils were analyzed to find out changes in their geometrical thinking levels. The result is that three out of five under achievers showed one or two level-up in their geometrical thinking levels, though the other two pupils remained at the same level as the results by the pretest. Moreover we found that mathematical journal writing could provide the pupils with opportunities to restructure the content which they study through their class.
