A Composite Study on the Writing Characteristics of Korean Learners - Focused on Syntax Production, Syntax Complexity and Syntax Errors (한국어 학습자의 쓰기 특성에 관한 융복합적 연구 - 구문산출성, 구문복잡성 및 구문오류를 중심으로)

  • For Korean learners, writing is a harder part than any other areas in Korean languages. But in the future, the ability to organize and write systematically is essential for future koran languages learners to take classes, do assignments and presentations at school, and then adapt to job situations. Therefore, there is a need to devise a direction for this. In general, writing characteristics are viewed in many ways, including writing productivity, writing complexity, and writing errors. Accordingly, the study provided drawings and A4 paper for Vietnamese Korean learners, Chinese Korean learners, and Korean university students, before writing freely. Based on the their writing results, we looked at syntax factors (total C-units, total number of words), syntax complexity (number of words per C-unit and clause density), and writing errors (postposition, spell errors, and connective suffix, space errors) According to the study, Vietnamese and Chinese Korean language learners showed significantly lower syntax productivity and complexity than Korean university students, and showed more writing errors than Korean students in postposition and clause density. Based on the results of the study, we discussed writing guidelines for Korean languages learners. However, this study did not validate the differences in writing characteristics according to the Korean language level and length of residences for the study subjects. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this in future research.

Investigation into Longitudinal Writing Development Using Linear Mixed Effects Model (선형 혼합 모형을 통해 살펴본 쓰기 능력의 장기적인 발전 양상 탐색)

  • This study investigates longitudinal writing development in terms of syntactic complexity using linear mixed effects (LME) model. This study employs essays written by four case study participants. Participants voluntarily wrote essays outside of the classroom and submitted the first and second drafts, after reflecting on the automated writing evaluation feedback (i.e., Criterion) every month over one year. A total of 48 first drafts were analyzed and syntactic complexity features were selected from Syntactic Complexity Analyzer. Results of LME showed that there was a significant positive linear relationship between time and mean length of T-unit and also between time and the ratio of dependent clauses to independent clauses, indicating that case study participants wrote longer T-units and also a higher proportion of dependent clauses over one year.

The Relationship between English Proficiency and Syntactic Complexity for Korean College Students (한국 대학생의 에세이에 나타난 영어 능력 수준과 통사적 복잡성 간의 관계 탐색)

  • This study investigates the relationship between syntactic complexity and English proficiency for Korean college students, using the recently developed TAASSC(the Tool for the Automatic Analysis of Syntactic Sophistication and Complexity) program. Essays on the ICNALE(International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English) corpus were employed and phrasal complexity indices and clausal complexity indices, respectively were used to predict English proficiency level for Korean students. Results of stepwise regression analysis showed that indices of phrasal complexity explained 8% of variance in English proficiency, while indices of clausal complexity accounted for approximately 11%. That is, indices of clausal complexity were slightly better predictors of English proficiency than indices of phrasal complexity, which contradicts Biber et at.(2011)'s claim that phrasal complexity is the hallmark of writing development.

  • 현재 낸드 플래시 메모리는 크기가 작고 충격에 강하며 소비전력이 적어 스마트 디바이스의 메인 스토리지로 활용되고 있다. 하지만 읽기, 쓰기 동작 외에 소거 동작의 필요와 메모리 접근 단위의 차이, 쓰기 횟수의 한계 등의 단점이 존재하며 이를 사용하는 파일 시스템은 기존의 파일 시스템과는 다른 복잡한 연산과 다양한 접근 방식이 요구되어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 낸드 플래시의 제약을 극복하기 위해 연구되어온 파일시스템들의 특성과 차세대 메모리로 불리는 SCM의 적용으로 얻을 수 있는 장점을 분석하고 향후 연구방향에 대해 모색하도록 한다.

The Relationship between Syntactic Complexity Indices and Scores on Language Use in the Analytic Rating Scale (통사적 복잡성과 분석적 척도의 언어 사용 점수간의 관계 탐색)

  • This study investigates the relationship between syntactic complexity indices and scores on language use in Jacobs et al.(1981)' analytic rating scale. Syntactic complexity indices obtained from TAASSC program and 440 essays written by EFL students from the ICNALE corpus were analyzed. Specifically, this study explores the relationship between scores on language use and Lu(2011)'s traditional syntactic complexity indices, phrasal complexity indices, and clausal complexity indices, respectively. Results of the stepwise regression analysis showed that phrasal complexity indices turned out to be the best predictor of scores on language use, although the variance in scores on language use was relatively small, compared with the previous study. Implications of the findings of the current study for writing instruction (i.e., syntactic structures at the phrase level) were also discussed.

  • OpenMP 프로그램에서 수행되는 스레드들간에 적절한 동기화 없이 적어도 하나의 쓰기 사건으로 동일한 공유변수에 접근하는 경우에 발생되는 오류인 경합은 비결정적인 수행결과를 초래하므로 디버깅을 위해서 반드시 탐지되어야 한다. 이러한 경합탐지를 위한 기존의 디버깅 도구는 프로그램의 복잡한 수행구조 및 디버깅 정보를 시각화하기 위한 공간이 제한적이므로 효과적인 시각화를 제공하지 못한다. 본 논문에서는 경합 시각화를 위해서 3차원적 시각화와 스레드 및 이벤트 둥의 추상화 기능으로 공간적 제약성을 해결하는 도구를 제안한다. 제안된 도구는 추상적 시각화 정보를 제공하므로 프로그램의 이해가 용이하고 효과적인 경합디버깅 환경을 제공한다.

  • In this paper, we propose an a strategy using writing based on STEAM Instruction for information gifted students' creative problem-solving. It is needed a complex and dynamic interaction of variety elements for creative problem solving. And it should be provided experience encompassing various disciplines thorough convergence education for leading to the these interactions and developing the ability to solve complex problems. Writing has already been verified educational effects in a variety subjects. And writing gives a positive impact on creative problem solving by helping awareness of the problem and encouraging critical thinking. In addition, writing can be used as an effective tool for improving problem solving based on similarities between problem-solving process. Learners will find algorithm thorough the process analyzing and writing experience with high-tech products like vending machines, mobile phones and can learn naturally the principles of various disciplines used in real life. Furthermore, learners will experience interaction, convergence of various thinking and cultivate creative problem- solving skills.

An Investigation into the Equivalence of Three Pictures for Creative Story Writing: 'Dog Owners', 'Lost Dog', and 'Overslept' (창의적 이야기 작문용 세 그림의 동형 조사: 'Dog Owners,' 'Lost Dog,' 'Overslept')

  • Alternate pictures that are proven to be equivalent are in high demand to assess creative thinking and language skills. This study aimed to investigate the equivalence of three pictures ('Dog owners,' 'Lost Dog,' and 'Overslept') recently developed for use in a creative writing task. Middle school students (N=183) wrote a story in English based on one of the three prompts distributed randomly. Four writing features (fluency, syntactic complexity, lexical diversity, and temporality) were analyzed with Coh-Metrix and MANCOVA. The three prompts were largely equivalent in their capacity to detect differences among writers in all the features of writing. The difficulty levels of the three prompts, however, were not necessarily the same. Two prompts, Dog Owners and Lost Dog, were verified as equivalent prompts, and therefore, they are recommended as alternate forms to assess creative language skills in repeated measurements. The Overslept prompt had greater facility in eliciting diverse words and more temporal connectives in composing stories. The differential difficulty shown among the prompts suggests that the validity of using different picture versions in repeated assessment remains questionable unless those versions undergo equivalence verification.

  • 다단계 보안데이터베이스 시스템에서 기본적인 병행수행 제어 기법들은 비밀채널과 교착상태등과 같은 문제들이 발생하였다. 이에 직렬화 순서를 동적으로 재조정함으로서 해결하려는 방안이 있었지만, 알고리즘의 복잡성으로 인해 오버 헤드와 많은 수행시간이 필요하게 되었고, 이에 따라 많은 양의 시스템 자원과 높은 사양의 시스템을 요구하게 되었다. 또한 이러한 방법은 다중 버전을 사용함으로서 추가적인 관리비용이 높게 되었고, 각각의 트랜잭션이 지연 및 재수행이란 불필요한 과정을 반복하게 되었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 제안한 알고리즘은 데이터베이스의 용도에 맞게 직렬화 순서를 보장하여 스케줄을 관리하는 요청 2단계 로킹기법(Request Two-phase Locking)으로서 이는 2단계 로킹기법의 기본원리에 요청로크를 사용함으로 보다 효율적으로 병행제어를 할 수 있다. 여기서 요청로크는 각각의 트랜잭션 스케줄에 로크획득 및 해제를 병행수행제어의 필요에 따라 유동적으로 할 수 있으며, 읽기로크, 쓰기로크, 요청로크라는 3가지 로킹모드를 통해 대처방안을 마련함으로서, 충돌을 방지하며, 충돌연산의 특성에 따라 직렬화 순서를 동적으로 조정함으로 블록킹을 막는 병행제어를 응용하여 병렬성을 유지한다.

Science Teachers' Perception on Major Features of the 2007 Revised Science Curriculum for Class Implementation (2007년 개정 과학과 교육과정의 주요 내용의 실행에 관한 과학 교사의 인식)

  • This study aimed to investigate how science teachers perceived major features of the 2007 revised science curriculum and implementing them in classes. The 2007 revised science curriculum included critical features such as creativity, open inquiry, science writing, discussion and STS. In terms of necessity, clarity and complexity of those features for curriculum implementation, teacher perceptions were examined. Particularly with regard to open inquiry assigned 6 class periods per semester as one of the critical features of 2007 revised science curriculum, we asked teachers how they would prepare and implement the technique in their teaching. In results of this study, science teachers agreed on the necessity and importance of those major features of the 2007 revised science curriculum, including creativity, open inquiry, science writing, discussion, and STS. However, they were not clear on how those would work in their classrooms and expected various impediments. Open inquiry was specifically perceived as most negative in its implementation with the mention of various complex reasons. Based on findings in this study, we proposed the 'Dual Action Research Model' for curriculum implementation. It tries to explain how curriculum is implemented in classrooms and diminish the gaps between curriculum developers and teacher users by means of leading teachers to understand the curriculum meaningfully and implement their teaching based on this understanding.
