  • For the soil nailing, recently, its application is expanded, but there is no officially approved method to design it yet. Furthermore, there are a great number of design valuables in soil nailing, it is also used without clear data under the situation that uncompleted detailed research on the sensibility between design variables. Especially, there has no deal with the installation angle of the nail - the major contents in this study. Therefore, this study based on the theoretical estimation analyzed safety rate about the angle of the nail, unit weight, adhesive force, internal friction angle and tensile farce worked on nail in the case of the rear of pond side is both horizontal and perpendicular. As a result, it could be verified that the safety rate increased on every cases in the situation of the nail installation angle was in upward direction than in downward direction.

  • The Green Wall system is one of segmental concrete crib type earth retaining wall. Green wall is constructed as procedures that lay the front stretchers, rear stretchers and headers then making a rigid body through harden filled soil of interior cell. Recently, Green Wall method is applied in variable cutting ground construction because of advantage which minimize to cut base ground. In case of Green Wall method is constructed with soil nail method, expect that total system stability will increase more than flexible facing because of facing stiffness is big. However, in this case of design, facing stiffness is not considered so that is poor economy. Hence, in this study, stability increasing effect of total system analyze about that soil nail method is constructed with rigidity facing like a Green Wall method. In present study, laboratory model tests was performed for analysis on stability increasing effect of total system about changing stiffness of facing. LEM analysis conducted for evaluation on safety factor of total system sliding that facing condition changed.

  • In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology which uses bamboo, rich natural material growing in southern areas, is developed to prevent the soil pollution and to overcome the difficulty of excavation near existing structures. Experimental and analytical studies were performed to confirm application possibility of bamboo taking the place of existent reinforcement material, that is steelbar, FRP and etc. In experimental study, strength characteristics of bamboo material were analyzed, and pull-out resistance of bamboo soil nailing system by field pull-out tests was examined. In analytical study, limit equilibrium analysis and displacement analysis were performed, and application possibility of bamboo soil nailing system was analyzed. As the result of this study, bamboo has comparatively good strength and pull-out resistance characteristics. It is expected that bamboo can be used as satisfactory reinforcement material by selecting bamboo with reguired diameter and by controlling the number of bamboo strips. Bamboo is an alternative for the reinforcement of soil nailing system, especially temporary support system in excavation near the existing structures.

  • The Green Wall system, developed in Austria early 1960, is one of segmental concrete crib type earth retaining wall. Green wall is constructed as procedures that lay the front stretchers, rear stretchers and headers then making a rigid body through harden filled soil of interior cell. Green wall has pro-environmental advantages that able to grow grass in front space of stretchers and decrease cutting ground. In Europe, Green wall used without other reinforcement method. However, green wall used with other reinforcement method like a soil nailing because of environmental problem. This study was performed to introduce the design case by 'Two-Body Translation mechanism' to be able to consider distribution of earth pressure in the soil nailing when designing the green wall using soil nailing system. Also, this study attempts to evaluate the earth pressure change when advanced soil nailing system is constructed using $FLAC^{2D}$ ver. 3.30 program and 'Two-Body Translation mechanism'.

  • The soil nailing is one of the useful support-system in urban excavation because of the presence of other structures in the vicinity Since the soil nailing system was introduced, model experiments and theoretical studies have been performed to investigate behavior of soil nailed wall. However, there are few data in the case of multi-layered soil strata just like Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The feed back analyses are carried out using the measured wall displacement data for soil nailing construction sites with multi-layered strata in order to analyze the distance and the coefficients of extension zone of ground behind soil nailed wall. As a result, the distance of extension zone increased with increasing of the final excavation depth and the ratio of the distance to the final excavation depth was shown to be about 94% of the final excavation depth. Also, the coefficients of extension zone increased with enlargement of soil layer thickness and converged into constant value of 1.05. On the other hand, the maximum vertical displacements by the feed back analysis and Caspe's method were shown to be approximately 80%, 150~280% of the maximum horizontal displacement respectively.

  • Soil nailing is the most general method to reinforce the slope by taking pullout and shear resistance force of the nail for stabilizing the slope. Domestic soil nailing design method considers only pullout resistance and does not consider the shear resistance sufficiently. In case of nail, the effect of tensile stress is dominant, but it is desirable to design by considering shear stress as well as tensile stress in case of slope where circle failures occur. Recently, studies on the shear resistance effect of nails have been carried out in the geotechnical field. However, many researches on the shear reinforcement effect of soil nailing have not been conducted until now. Most of the studies are about increasing pullout resistance by improving material, shape and construction method of nail. Therefore, it is necessary to the study on shear resistance of soil nailing and development of new methods to increase the shear force. In this study, large shear test and limit equilibrium analysis have been performed for a new soil nailing method to increase the shear resistance by forming protrusions through pressurized grouting after installing a packer on the outside of deformed bar. The study results showed that shear resistance of protrusion type soil nailing increased compared to soil nailing and it is more effective when applied to the ground with large strength parameters.

  • Application of the soil nailing method is continuously extending in maintaining stable excavations and slopes. However, ground anchor support system occasionally may not be used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then could play important roles to reduce deformations mainly in an upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as to improve local stability. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN (Pretension Soil Nailing) is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the PSN system has been investigated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, laboratory model tests are carried out to investigate the failure mechanism and behavior characteristics of the PSN system. Various results of model tests are also analyzed to provide a fundamental basis for the efficient design.

  • In this study, numerical analyses and model tests were conducted to figure out the behavior of a slope reinforced by upward drainable soil nails during rainfall. The model tests were carried out on both reinforced and unreinforced slopes. To verify the results of the tests, seepage analyses were performed and compared with the test results using a commercial program, SEEP/W. The results showed that the numerical analyses have in overall a good agreement with the experiments in the variations of ground water level and pore water pressure even though there is some time delay for the experiment before the changes in the ground water level and pore water pressure after rainfall are observed, while the numerical analyses not.

  • The benefits of utilizing internal reinforced members, such as soil nails and ground anchors, in maintaining stable excavations and slopes have been known among geotechnical engineers to be very effective. Occasionally, however, both soil nails and ground anchors are simultaneously used in one excavation site. In the present study, a method of limit equilibrium stability analysis of the excavation zone reinforced with the vertically or horizontally mixed nail-anchor system is proposed to evaluate the global safety factor with respect to a sliding failure. The postulated failure wedges are determined based on the results of the $FLAC^{2D}\; 및\; FLAC^{3D}$ program analyses. This study also deals with a determination of the required thickness of the shotcrete facing. An excessive facing thickness may be required due to both the stress concentration and the relative displacement at the interface zone between the soil nailing system and the ground anchor system. A simple finite element method of analysis is presented to estimate the corresponding relative displacement at the interface zone between two different support systems. As an efficient resolution to reduce the facing thickness, the modified bearing plate system is also proposed. Finally with various analysis related to the effects of design parameters, the predicted displacements are compared with the results of the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analyses.
