  • The flow characteristics around a floating cylinder in a swirling flow field in a vertical pipe with a length of 600mm and an inner diameter of 100mm is investigated by the use of the Stereoscopic-PIV system. The measurement system consists of two cameras, a Nd-Yag laser and a host computer. Optical sensors(LEDs) were used to detect the location of the floating cylinder and to activate the Stereoscopic-PIV system. A conditional sampling Stereoscopic-PIV system was developed in which the flow fields around the floating cylinder are measured at the events of the activations. It has been verified that the motion of the floating cylinder becomes stable when the azimuthal velocity component of the swirl flow is maintained at stable states.

  • Cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. The present work has focused on the simulation of cavitating flow past cylinders with strong side flows. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on the homogeneous mixture model. The momentum and energy equation is in the mixture phase while the continuity equation is solved liquid and vapor phase, separately. An implicit dual time and preconditioning method are employed for computational analysis. For the code validation, the results from the present solver have been compared with experiments and other numerical results. A fairly good agreement with the experimental data and other numerical results have been obtained. After the code validation, the strong side flow was applied to include the wake flow effects of the submarine or ocean tide.

  • Many researches were carried out to estimate heat transfer rate on a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. Various empirical correlations were suggested in the past through expermental studies, however there are considerable discrepancies in the estimated values of heat transfer coefficient. Effects of variable properties of fluid on the heat transfer between a circular cylinder and the external uniform flow were numerically investigated in the present study. The flow and temperature fields were solved using a finite volume method for the uniform flow temperature of 200-900K and the wall temperature of 300-900K. The cold as well as the hot cylinders in the uniform flow of constant temperature were investigated. A unified correlation was obtained for the both cases.

  • The present paper is Part 2 of three-part paper for an experimental study on breaking waves generated by a submerged cylinder. Measurements of velocity and head loss profiles at the wakes of cylinder and breaker as well as the turbulent intensities in breaking region were made to elucidate the viscous aspects of breaking waves. Their mutual correlation is also investigated. It is found that the head loss profile is an excellent indicator of the strength and extent of breaker. Very high turbulent intensities measured at and just downstream of the breaker indicate the consequence of energy transfer of wave breaking into turbulence.

  • Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IBLBM) has been applied to simulate a turbulent flow over circular cylinder in a flow field effectively. Although IBLBM is very effective method to simulate the flow over a complex shape of obstacle in the flow field regardless of the constructed grids in the calculation domain, the results, however, become numerically unstable in high reynolds number flow. The most effective suggestion to archive the numerical stability in high Reynolds number flow is applying the multiple relaxation time (MRT) model instead of single relaxation time(SRT) model in the collision term of lattice Boltzmann equation. In the research MRT model for IBLBM was introduced and comparing the numerical results obtained by applying SRT and MRT. The hydraulic characteristic of cylinder in a flow field between two parallel plate at the range of $Re{\leqq}2000$represented and it is also compared the drag and lifting coefficients of the cylinder calculated by IBLBM with SRT and MRT model.

  • In this paper, flow patterns around two vertical cylinders were investigated numerically and experimentally Flow patterns between cylinders are very complex and interative. Changing gaps between cylinders the flow patterns are measured and numerically studied at a fixed comming velocity. The experiment has beeen conducted in circulating water channel with PIV system and manometer, and numerical analysis has been made by F.D.M. and multi block method. The results can be applied in the understanding and design of multiple pile array structures.

  • The paper presents numerical simulations of laminar vortex-shedding flows past a circular cylinder for Re ≤ 500. The simulations are performed by solving the unsteady 2-D Navier-Stokes equations with a finite volume method using unstructured grid system. The resulting Reynolds number dependence of the Strouhal number and of the drag and lift coefficients is compared with experiments and with previous numerical results, showing good agreement. It is found that, for the truly laminar Reynolds number range the present calculation method described is capable of producing reasonably accurate results for the main practically relevant parameters such as Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients.

  • Three-dimensional, time-dependent solutions of fluid flow past a circular cylinder with a periodic array of circular fins are obtained using an accurate and efficient spectral multidomain methodology. A Fourier expansion with a corresponding uniform grid is used along the circumferential direction. A spectral multidomain method with Chebyshev collocation is used along the r-z plane to handle the periodic array of circular fins attached to the surface of the cylinder. Unlike the flow past a circular cylinder, Second instabilities like mode A and mode B are not found in the Reynolds number range $100\~500$. It is found that three-dimensional instability of vortical structures is suppressed due to the presence of fin. The present numerical solutions report the detailed information of flow quantities near wake of finned cylinder.

  • The present study numerically investigates three-dimensional laminar flow past a rotating circular cylinder placed in a uniform stream. For the purpose of a careful analysis of the modification of flow by the effect of the rotation on the flow, numerical simulations are performed at a various range of rotational coefficients ($0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}2.5$) at one Reynolds number of 300. As ${\alpha}$ increases, flow becomes stabilized and finally a steady state beyond the critical rotational coefficient. The 3D (three dimensional) wake mode of the stationary cylinder defined at this Reynolds number has been disorganized according to ${\alpha}$, which were observed by the visualization of 3D vortical structures. The variation of the Strouhal number is very weak when the wake pattern is changed according to the rotational coefficient. As ${\alpha}$ increases, the lift increases, whereas the drag decreases.
