Objectives:To determine the influence of parental behaviors on the onset and severity of eating disorders, this study compared aspects of perceived parental styles, according to eating disorder subtypes and age at onset in Korean women with eating disorders. Methods:One hundred and sixty-seven patients with eating disorders[Anorexia Nervosa (AN), N=49; Bulimia Nervosa(BN), N=118] were recruited for this study. Perceived parent behaviors were assessed with Parental Behavior Inventory(PBI) self-rating scale. The study subjects also completed the Eating Disorder Inventory -2 (EDI-2) to assess the severity of eating disorder symptoms. Results:In anorexia nervosa, early onset group(<16 years) reported low paternal affection and high paternal rational expression, low maternal interference than group with age at onset over 16 years. The severity of eating disorder symptoms was negatively associated with mother affection and rational expression in two subtypes of eating disorder(AN and BN). On stepwise regression analysis, paternal affection and maternal over-protection were associated with age of onset only in AN group and maternal affection was associated with the severity of symptoms in both groups of eating disorder. Conclusions:Considering the role of family function and perceived parental styles could help improve the management of eating disorders. These results emphasize the importance of fathers' role in the eating disorder on the age of onset, a relatively unexplored area of eating disorder research. Also, we investigated the importance of mothers' affection on the severity of symptoms.
The study was conducted to identify the influence of depression and eating disorder on college adjustment in female freshmen. Two hundred twenty one subjects completed a structured questionnaire in March to April 2016. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 21.0 program. The results of this study were as follows: college adjustment in female freshmen was 106.14, depression was 10.22, bulimia nervosa was 61.84, anorexia nervosa was 10.46. Depression (r=-0.409, p<.001) and bulimia nervosa(r=-0.133, p<.048) were negatively related with college adjustment and bulimia nervosa(r=0.391, p<.001) and anorexia nervosa(r=0.302, p<.001) were positively related with depression. Female freshmen with high depression and eating disorder had lower college adjustment. The results of this study suggest that it needs to do a screening test for depression and eating disorders, predict maladaptation and help their college adjustment in freshmen.
The cause of the eating disordered diet, which is a main topic of this study, has not been identified clearly, however, has been affected by an emphasis of western norm of a beauty - being tall and skinny - since the eighties. Another reason would be his/her lack of self-confidence and willingness to resolve his/her unsatisfied mental problem. There are two different of eating disordered diets; anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa. firstly, a patient of anorexia nervosa which is characterized by the loss in weight, tends to either deny meals, due to his/her desire to be skinny and a fear of gaining the weight. Secondly, a patient of bulimia nervosa eats much more food than an ordinary person does in around two hours and then removes them by doing vomiting with drugs. obesity is defined as overweight by $20\%$ and more than normal weight. In this case, body mass index(BMI) defined by the ratio of the weight(kg) to the height(m') is used. BMI = Weight(kg) / Height(m) In this paper, a list of questioneire for an adolescent to self-diagnosis the possibility of his/her eating disorder diet is identified and then a multi-media system which incorporates the list is designed and implemented with ASP language as a server language on a local host.
Objectives This paper aims to understand the emotional-biological pathogenesis of eating disorders, and translate the understanding into new brain directed treatments. Methods The first part of the review sets the eating behavior into the context of what is now understood about the central control of appetite and molecular biology. The second part of the review sees how emotion relates to the brain circuit involving eating disorders. Results In general, patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type were less sensitive to reward, whereas patients with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa binge purging type were more sensitive to it. The emotional life of people with eating disorders centers on food, weight, and shape. The abnormalities in social and emotional functioning both precede and persist outside of eating disorders. Conclusions Research into understanding the biological framework of the brain in eating disorders suggests that abnormalities may exist in emotional and information processing. This aspect can be translated into novel brain-directed treatments, particularly in anorexia nervosa.
Eating disorders are psychiatric disorders characterized by abnormal eating patterns and cognitive distortions related to food, weight and shape, which is in turn result in adverse effects on nutrition status, medical complications, and impaired health status and function. The American Psychiatric Association's DSMIVTR offers two diagnoses to describe disordered eating anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A third category, eating disorder not otherwise specified(EONOS) include binge eating disorder. The prevalence of eating disorder has greatly increased among adolescence and young adults since 1990's when rapid import of western culture took place. It is likely that patients who ask for weight loss are at high risk of having eating disorder. Severe dietary restriction for weight loss may cause eating disorder. Therefore it is recomendable for doctors to have appropriate understanding and guidelines of eating disorder to help their patients.
Anorexia nervosa is a physical and psychosocial disorder that occurs most frequently in adolescent girls and young adult women. A decade ago, anorexia nervosa was rare outside of the developed western countries. However, it is now becoming a common clinical problem among young women in Korea. It is not enough to merely focus on relieving patients from the symptoms of "not eating," which is a practice that has been adopted by some forms of hospital care. The evidence base to guide treatment is limited. Nevertheless, there is the hope that a better understanding of the factors that play a role in the initiation and maintenance of disordered eating behaviors may be lead to more sophisticated treatments. This review aims to look beyond the overt "not eating" phenotype of anorexia nervosa and considers eating disorder endophenotypes based on Treasure's model. The first part of the review sets the basis for a framework of potential eating disorder endophenotypes. A description of the evidence of disordered eating behaviors as well as the clinical and psychopathological features associated with the central control of appetite follow. Finally, we describe how endophenotypes can be translated into treatments.
Objectives: This study was performed to review the research trends in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Methods: Studies were searched through The China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. The search term for the subject were 'Eating Disorder', and 'Anorexia Nervosa'. Clinical research that conducted TCM treatment for AN patients were included. Studies were analyze according to study design, therapy method, diagnostic criteria, population and intervention. Results: 23 articles were selected. According to study design, studies were classified into two randomized controlled trial (RCT), three single group before-and-after studies, and 18 case reports. According to therapy method, they included 19 herbal medicine studies, two acupuncture treatment studies, and two complex treatment studies. The most common pattern identification was 'liver depression with spleen deficiency' (肝鬱脾虛), and the most used herb was 'Root of Bupleurum falcatum' (柴胡). Most of the studies showed effective results in increasing appetite and weight. Conclusions: The results of our study demonstrate that TCM treatments for AN has been effective in alleviating chief symptoms. However, in terms of evidence-based medicine, lack of RCT on TCM treatments for AN and absence of objective diagnostic criteria in case reports are limitations. Therefore well-designed further clinical studies should be performed based on the results of this study are recommended.
The purpose of this study is to develop Music Recall Technique for affect modification using programmed series of classical music, and further to apply the technique as therapeutic intervention for clients with anorexia nervosa. Music Recall Technique is composed of two sub-technique: first one is 'Music Recall(MR)' which is the way to reproduce of existing music on one's head and mind after listening to the music, and second intervention is 'Creative Music Recall(CMR)' which is the way to modify the exposed musical pieces or newly learned musical pieces. A client with anorexia nervosa with severe anxiety, anger and depression participated in this case study. The MRT is implemented in different stages pertaining to client's level of utilizing the music recall skill for the period of 10 sessions. Situations eliciting negative emotions were identified and music recalling was reinforced for the pertaining situation in order for the negative emotion to be coped and reduced by the end of session time. The client participated for 10 sessions, and was asked to fill out self-report on the affect change using MRT. Visual Analogue Scale was used for pre and post test for each session to measure the self perceived level of negative affect. State-trait anxiety inventory was also used to measure the anxiety level following the implementation of MRT. As results, negative emotions, such as anxiety, anger and depression were modified during stimulative-sedative music recall process. These negative emotions were decreased mostly during stimulative MR, especially, in the beginning process. Each negative affect on negative situation measured by VAS during each and entire session have been decreased. Negative emotion measured by state-trait anxiety inventory, state-trait anger expression inventory, and hopelessness-depression inventory were decreased as well. The results suggest that stimulative music using contemporary classic music was effective in reduction and modification of negative affect such as anxiety, anger and depression. It shows that Music Recall Technique can be a meaningful intervention for affect modification, and further it can be utilized as self-help in the outside of music therapy setting.
