Effects of the different strengths and intervals of the periodic outer water intrusions (kyuchos and bottom intrusions) on the dynamics of phytoplankton biomass in a small embayment were examined with a simple numerical model. Environmental conditions of Kitanada Bay in the Bungo Channel were applied to the model. As the interval of the intrusion became longer and the amplitude became smaller, phytoplankton biomass In the bay became higher. On the other hand, as the interval became shorter and the amplitude became larger, the growth rate of the phytoplankton became higher. It suggested that when the intrusion was weaker, water exchange of the bay decreased and the phytoplankton in the bay accumulated at a high density, When water exchange was improved by active intrusions, availability of light would become more efficient and the growth rate of the phytoplankton was enhanced.
The seasonal changes in phytoplankton species composition, standing crops, dominant species, species diversity and physico-chemical characteristics in the Unmun dam were studied, from August, 2009 to April, 2010. The phytoplanktons of a total of 121 taxa were identified, the composition of phytoplankton community was characterized by a green algae and diatoms, and the quantity composition of standing crops was dominated by diatoms and dinophyceae. The diatoms Aulacoseria granulata and blue-green alga Anabaena planktonica in Summer, Peridinium voltzii in Autumn and Asterionella formosa in Winter to Spring were, especially, prominent. The seasonal changes of the biomass varied from 578 cells $mL^{-1}$ to 12,938 cells $mL^{-1}$, and the maximum algal density was observed in April, Asterionells formosa contributed to 88% of the total cell numbers. The species diversity and richness were highest during autumn, and dominance index was highest in the spring season.
The phytoplankton ecology of estuarine waters was investigated in the Kyeonggi Bay from May 1981 to September 1982 on monthly basis. In this study area, a total of 228 phytoplankton species was identified. Among these taxa, the most dominant species are diatoms in this area. Tychopelagic plankton occupies 40.4% of total species. The percentage of tychopelagic plankton density ranged from 10.2% in September to 92.7% in March of monthly standing crops. From late autumn to early spring, the percentage values are more than 72%. They play an important role from late autumn to early spring in this estuarine plandton community. These tychopelagic planktons are induced from benthic diatoms. Because the bottom shear stresses generated by the tides and winds are stronger than the adhesive and tractive force of benthic diatoms, most of benthic diatoms must be resuspended into tychopelagic suspensions during autumn and winter. Paralia sulcata is the most important tychopelagic plankton as an indicator species of water mixing in the eastern coastal area of Yellow Sea. This species seems to have even broader tolerance to the environmental stress than Skeletonema costalum, and tends to fill the gaps in winter, when the phytoplandton is relatively unsuccessful. Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros debilis are dominant in other seasons. Typical blooms of phytoplankton occur in spring and early autumn, The first bloom is started by Skeletonema costatum in early May, second peak is formed by various diatom population in September.
Nutrient limitation was examined for the Dongbak Lake based on bioassay experiments and analyses of long-term monitoring data. From the results of data analyses, molar ratios of TN/TP and DIN/DIP were higher than 16 : 1 suggesting that phytoplankton growth was potentially limited by phosphorus. Phytoplankton responded to the addition of phosphates in the incubation experiments for all seasons whereas phytoplankton did not respond to other nutrients such as ammonia, nitrate and silicates. Size fraction (net and nano size) of phytoplankton also responded to the addition of phosphorus indicating that phytoplankton growth was limited by phosphorus in the Dongbok Lake. There was also a taxonomic shift from euglenophyceae to bacillariophyceae after addition of phosphate during warm season especially.
This study described the spatial distributions of marine environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a concentration and turbidity, and characteristics of phytoplankton community such as species composition, standing crops and dominant species at 19 fishing ports around Jeju Island during the early summer of 2016. I analyzed bio-oceanographical characteristics using principal component analysis (PCA) of the environmental factors and biological parameters. Water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a and turbidity ranged from 17.6 to $20.7^{\circ}C$, from 26.19 to 32.33 psu, from 0.76 to $7.13{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and from 0.51 to 14.49 FTU, respectively. A total of 51 species of phytoplankton belonging to 35 genera were identified. In particular, diatoms and dinoflagellates accounted for more than 56.8% and 27.4% of all the species, respectively. Moreover, the number of phytoplankton species was controlled by salinity. Phytoplankton cell density ranged from $2.9cells\;mL^{-1}$ to $185.9cells\;mL^{-1}$. The dominant species were Navicula spp. Stephanopyxis turris, Eutreptiella gymnastica and Mesodinium rubrum. Environmental factors and the phytoplankton community varied greatly between sampling sites. According to PCA, the biological oceanographic characteristics of the around Jeju Island were characterized by meteorological factors such as air temperature, precipitation and discharge of ground water during early summer.
Relative importance between bottom-up and top-down controls on phytoplankton dynamics was investigated in the Juam Reservoir, Chonnam based on the results from statistical analyses including regression and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. Effects of nutrients on size-structured phytoplankton dynamics were explored by simple linear regression analysis and relative importance between bottom-up and top-down controls was estimated based on results from the artificial neural network analyses. Although there is a limitation in determining direct grazing effects since chlorophyll a : pheopigments ratios, indirect index for grazing activity rather than grazing rates or herbivores biomass were used, the results from regression analysis showed that nutrients especially orthophosphates were positively correlated with the phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a : pheopigments ratios were also positively correlated with the phytoplankton biomass at lower coefficient of determination ($r^2$) compared to orthophosphates. The simulation results from ANN suggested that the bottom-up mechanisms including water temperature and availability of nutrients, especially orthophosphates were more important than top-down mechanisms such as grazing in the phytoplankton dynamics.

Using physiological data which had been already published, we investigated variation of phytoplankton communities due to changes of marine environmental factor at 2 stations of northern Gamak Bay from November 2007 to September 2008. Dominant species (occupied species above 10%) were dinoflagellates 1 species and diatom 11 species. Diatom Skeletonema costatum was observed as dominant species during the periods except in summer (i.e. July and August), especially, which occupied above 90% in December. On the other hand, dominant species during summer were diatom Eucampia zodiacus and Chaetoceros spp., Considering the results of other physiological studies, S. costatum might be non-dominant species during summer by following reasons 1) growth rate of E. zodiacus might be taster than that of S. costatum under the temperature during summer although both S. costatum and E. zodiacus are eurythermal and euryhaline species. 2) Species as E. zodiacus characterized by low affinity with light might have a chance to be dominant with increasing optical transparency due to low suspended solids in July. 3) In aspect of nutrition, species of growth strategist as S. costatum could be dominant in relatively low concentration of phosphate and species of storage strategist as E. zodiacus could be dominant in relatively high concentration of phosphate during summer in this study area. In order to understand the phytoplankton dynamics in detail, the physiological informations about strains isolated from this study area are necessary because physiological conditions are different depending on isolated area.
This study was conducted to determine limiting nutrients and the physiological characteristics of phytoplankton in response of nutrients in Lake Paldang from March 2002 to October 2002. A field research was conducted along with laboratory batch culture experiment to find the limiting nutrients and the growth kinetics. According the results of Chl. a TP relationship, TN/TP ratio, and nutrient addition bioassay, phosphorus appeared to be a major limiting nutrient in Lake Paldang and thus the lake productivity was greatly influenced by it. P limitation for the phytoplankton of Lake Paldang varied with season, and the possibility of limitation by nitrogen and silica also occurred. The degree of P limitation was greatest during spring when the concentration of dissolved phosphorus is relatively much lower than summer and autumn. The maximum growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) and half saturation concentration ($K_u$) of Lake Paldang phytoplankton ranged from 0.8${\sim}$1.1$day^1$ and from 0.1${\sim}$O.8${\mu}M$, respectively. $K_u$ was highest during May ($0.8{\mu}M$) and the lowest during September ($0.1{\mu}M$). Such result may be induced by the phytoplankton cell quota that showed the lowest concentration ($0.13{\mu}gP/{\mu}gChl.$ a) during May. The growth kinetics showed that phytoplankton growth in Lake Paldang was faster during summer and autumn than spring, suggesting that the Potential of algal bloom is high after the summer monsoon season.
Temporal and spatial variations of size-structured phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were investigated over an annual cycle (February-October, 2003) to elucidate phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir, Chonnam. Physical properties were also measured to investigate the relationship between the properties and temporal and spatial variations of size structured phytoplankton using simple linear regression. Phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were grouped into three size classes: micro-size(> 20 ${\mu}m$), nano-size (3-20 ${\mu}m$) and pico-size (< 3 ${\mu}m$) in this study. Physical properties included water temperature, light attenuation coefficients, PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) and turbidity. Maximum chlorophyll a was observed in April, 2003 in the lower region whereas a peak of chlorophyll a developed in October, 2003 in the upper region. Large cell-sized phytoplankton (micro-size class)were dominant in the events of the chlorophyll a peaks. Potential mechanisms in the physical properties affecting the size-structured phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir were discussed.

Geographic distribution and species composition of phytoplankton were investigated in Jinhae Bay for 12 months. Total 158 species were found including 95 bacillariophyceae, 58 dinophyceae, 1 euglenoids, and 4 dictyochaceae. The total cell numbers of phytoplakton ranged from $4.0{\times}10^3{\sim}9.0{\times}10^7\;cells{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Highest and lowest amounts of cells were found in July (Chl.a 13.19 $mg{\cdot}m^{-3}$) and March(Chl.a 3.44 $mg{\cdot}m^{-3}$), respectively. Leptocylindrus danicus and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were dominant in spring, and Dactliosolen fragilissimus and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. were dominant in summer. Chaetoceros spp. and Skeletonema spp. were domonant in autumn and winter. The amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus were also measured during the survey. Higher ratio of nitrogen (DIN : DIP = 28 : 1) was found in the east Jinhae Bay compared to the ratio of the west Jnhae Bay that showed 14 : 1 of N : P ratio. The total amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and Chl.a were also higher in the east Jinhae Bay compared to the west area. The geographic differences between the east and west of Jinhae Bay were also discussed along with phytoplankton compostion.
