XCEL: Object-oriented Spreadsheet (XCEL: 객체지향 스프레드시트)

  • Spreadsheet is one of the most widely used programming tool because of its ease of use, however there have been few researches on applying object-oriented techniques in developing spreadsheet applications. Generally, spreadsheet applications contain a lot of errors, and spreadsheet has some drawbacks such as low reusability and hard maintenance. In order to solve these problems, we introduce an object-oriented spreadsheet system, named XCEL. It enables users to develop applications using systematic techniques with data modelling method, and allows users to apply object-oriented technologies to spreadsheet programming. The data modelling method allows to define classes using XML and flowchart, and the spreadsheet represents an object with contiguous cells. XCEL has advantage that users can apply object-oriented technology to spreadsheet programming.

The Study on Using Spreadsheet in Probability and Statistics Area of High School (고등학교 확률 통계 영역에서 스프레드시트 활용에 대한 연구)

  • This study is based on the recognition that the school mathematics education should reinforce the heuristic and constructional aspects related with discoveries of mathematical rules and understanding of mathematical concepts from real world situations as well as the deductive and formal aspects emphasizing on mathematical contents precisely. The 11th grade students of one class from a city high school with average were chosen. They were given time to learn various functions of Excel in regular classes of "Information Society and Computer" subject. They don't have difficulty using cells, mathematical functions and statistical functions in spreadsheet. Experiment was performed for six weeks and there were two hours of classes in a week. Considering the results of this research, teaching materials using spreadsheets play an important role in helping students to experience probabilistic and statistical reasoning and construct mathematical thinking. This implies that teaching materials using spreadsheet provide students with an opportunity to interact with probabilistic and statistical situations by adopting engineering which can encourage students to observe and experience various aspects of real world in authentic situations.

  • 온라인 분석 처리(On-Line Analytical Processing: OLAP)은 데이터 웨어하우스로부터 다차원 데이터를 분석하거나 의사 결정을 위한 유용한 정보를 제공하고 있다. 데이터 분석을 위해, OLAP에서는 다차원 데이터를 표현한 스프레드시트(spreadsheet) 또는 피벗 테이블(PIVOT table)을 널리 사용하고 있다. 스프레드시트와 피벗 테이블은 서로 유사한 형태로써 분석의 기준이 되는 애트리뷰트들이 많은 구조이다. 사용자들은 흔히 사용되고 있는 SQL 구문을 이용하여 스프레드시트 또는 피벗 테이블에서 손쉬운 데이터 분석을 요구한다. 그러나, RDBMS에서 제공하는 SQL 구문의 사용으로, 이는 다차원 데이터를 효과적으로 분석할 수 없다. 그 이유는 SQL 구문이 다양한 데이터 분석의 목적으로 사용되거나, 요약된 집계 정보를 도출하는 데 한계가 있기 때문이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 SQL 구문을 확장하여 다차원 데이터를 표현한 스프레드시트를 손쉽게 조작하고, 요약된 집계를 계산하는 셀(cell) 구문을 제안한다. 이 방법은 스프레드시트와 피벗 테이블에서 행과 열이 교차하는 좌표(coordinate)를 이용하여, 특정 셀의 조작 및 선택한 부분/전체 영역에 대한 집계 정보를 계산하는 방법이다. 결과적으로, RDBMS에서 사용되는 SQL 구문이 친숙한 사용자들이 제안한 셀 구문을 이용하면, 다양한 관점에 따라 손쉽게 스프레드시트와 피벗 테이블을 다룰 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

The Role of Spreadsheet in Model Refinement in Mathematical Modeling Activity (수학적 모델링에서 스프레드시트 환경이 수학적 모델의 정교화 과정에 미치는 역할)

  • In mathematical modeling activity modeling process is usually an iterative process. When model can not be solved, the model needs to be simplified by treating some variables as constants, or by ignoring some variables. On the other hand, when the results from the model are not precise enough, the model needs to be refined by considering additional conditions. In this study we investigate the role of spreadsheet model in model refinement and modeling process. In detail, we observed that by using spreadsheet model students can solve model which can not be solved in paper-pencil environment. And so they need not go back to model simplification process but continue model refinement. By transforming mathematical model to spreadsheet model, the students can predict or explain the real word situations directly without passing the mathematical conclusions step in modeling process.

  • In this paper, we listed and discussed the properties of the Pythagorean triples which 5 gifted 9th graders could draw in spreadsheets environments. And we also discussed their implications. In detail, in spreadsheets environments students could make the table of Pythagorean triples easily under several conditions of generate numbers of Pythagorean triples. And they could draw several properties of Pythagorean triples from the tables and could prove them. In spreadsheets environments it is easy to give students chances of generalization of the properties of Pythagorean triples which they had obtained from the concrete table of Pythagorean triples.

  • 최근에 계산금융 분야에서 복잡한 수식을 이용한 연산이 증가하고 있다. 그리고 계산금융 분야에서 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션은 대표적인 계산방법 중에 하나이다. 그러나 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션은 많은 반복연산을 수행하므로 연산시간이 오래 걸리는 문제점이 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 몬테카를로 시뮬레이션과 스프레드시트를 병렬로 처리하였다. 또한 실험을 통하여 병렬 스프레드시트의 계산 노드가 증가함에 따라 파생상품의 계산 시간이 단축되는 것을 보였다.

  • 최근에 데이터관리, 통계분석, 그래프분석, What-If 분석 등을 위하여 스프레드시트가 광범위하게 사용되고 있다. 본 논문은 전자 부품을 생산하는 라인에 TGC(Theory of Constaints)를 적용하는 과정에서 활용된 엑셀 스프레드시트 프로그램의 사례에 대하여 소개한다. TOC 개념에서의 제품 조합 문제, 제약자원 선택 분석, DBR 스케쥴링 등인 자체의 함수기능, 그래프기능 해찾기 기능과 VBA(Visual Basic Application) 긴능을 이용하여 엑셀에서 구현된 내용이 포함된다.

  • In MMORPG development process, spreadsheet based data management has advantages in the handling of functions and analysis of large data set. But it has limitations in inserting, deleting, searching and relational management of that. In this paper, we proposed the spreadsheet based tool model for large data set for MMORPG development. Our system can reduce the risk of data management failure in MMORPG development process and improve the efficiency of data handling in the large-scale team.

Mathematical Discovery and Justification through Modeling Activity in Spreadsheet Environment (스프레드시트 환경에서 모델링 활동을 통한 수학적 발견과 정당화)

  • The Purpose of this study is to explore he mathematical discovery and justification of six 10th grade students through mathematical modeling activities in spreadsheet environments. The students investigated problem situations with a spreadsheet, which seem to be difficult to solve in paper and pencil environment. In spreadsheet environments, it is easy for students to form a data table and graph by inputting and copying spreadsheet formulas, and to make change specific variable by making a scroll bar. In this study those functions of spreadsheet play an important role in discovery and justification of mathematical rules which underlie in the problem situations. In modeling activities, the students could solve the problem situations and find the mathematical rules by using those functions of spreadsheets. They used two types of trial and error strategies to find the rules. The first type was to insert rows between two adjacent rows and the second was to make scroll bars connecting specific variable and change the variable by moving he scroll bars. The spreadsheet environments also help students to justify their findings deductively and convince them that their findings are true by checking various cases of the Problem situations.

  • In this article we studied the role of spreadsheet in teaching function and modeling activity by some examples and students' activity performed by the six 10th graders. We especially focused the role of spreadsheet in understanding of various kinds of functions and the families of functions, and in the explanation of the given modeling problem situations. The functions of automatic copy, graphic and the cell reference of spreadsheet can be used to make students observe the causes and effects of changes of the various kind of mathematical representations of functions such as algebraic formulas, tables and graphs. Especially those functions give students a chance to identify family of functions by changing the parameters and this may lead them to the discovery of mathematical facts. In modeling activities they play a key role in the stages of the analysis of the model, explanation of the results of model and conjecture of the real world situations. As well as they make students find the rules underlying in the real world by making spreadsheet as simulation environments, which are almost impossible to make in paper and pencil environments, and give them a chance to justify their findings using mathematics.
