  • The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors of subjective health status among the subjects of the 7th year 3 (2018) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and to help provide programs for improving subjective health status in the future. Data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(2018) were used. Variables were age, gender, age, subjective health status, subjective body shape recognition, weight change over the past year, usual stress level, walking days per week, and strength training days per week. The higher the number of walking days per week, the lower the usual stress perception level. As the number of strength training days per week increased, the level of stress perception was lower (p<.001). The subjects' subjective health status was found to have a negative effect on their usual stress perception (β=-.759), subjective body shape (β=.111), age (β=.421), and number of days walking per week. (β=.968). Based on this study, it is intended to provide basic data for preparing programs to help improve stress perception and subjective health status in the future.

  • Carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) test is a standardized ultrasound procedure that screens for and monitors atherosclerosis in a safe and non-invasive manner, even in individuals with no symptoms of heart disease. The purpose of this study was to research the relationship between CIMT, as measured by ultrasonography, and the degree of individual perceived stress. There was a total of 168 (male: 46, female: 122) university students in Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, without other diseases. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants. CIMT was measured in the right and left common carotid arteries 1 cm below the bifurcation, and internal carotid artery, using non-invasive high-resolution Medison Accuvix V20 prestige ultrasound equipment and perceived stress, was measured with the 10-item PSS (Perceived Stress Scale) questionnaire. This study indicates that PSS may be appropriate to estimate perceived stress levels and weight. Failure to control stress anxiety could lead to weight and CIMT soaring to dangerous levels, resulting in a myocardial infarction or cerebrovascular accident. There was a statistically significant difference between left CIMT (p<0.05) and weight (p<0.05) according to each stress classification. The results of this study suggest that the weight measurement is influenced in part by one's generalized stress levels. Future continuous studies should be conducted to test the influences of perceived stress and generalized anxiety on CIMT when these are many continuous variables.

  • There have been great deal of studies on adult stress but comprehensive studies on adolescent stress are not sufficient. Because adolescents have different developmental tasks from adult's, and because they spend most of their time in a structured environment such as school, the research on adolescent stress is necessary. So, this study empirically investigated the types of stress and coping which students experience and their coping mechanisms in a stressful situation. In this study, perceived social support was considered as stuructural variable, and cognitive appraisal as a process variable, while existing researches tried to explain the coping mechanism only from the viewpoint of structure, or hypothesized the structure variable in the process term. The relation ships between cognitive appraisal and perceived social support on coping behavior were evaluated. Survey on 519 high school students in Seoul showed that cogitive appraisal was a structural variable which varied across the types of stress, and that perceived social support was a structure variable which was independent of the type of stress. Cognitive appraisal was related more to the qualitative process of stress appraisal than coping behavior, and perceived social support was an important structure which influenced both the appraisal process and coping behavior.

  • This study aims to examine the effects of academic procrastination in middle school students on their academic achievement. It also analyzed the influences of stress level recognized by middle school students on their academic achievement. First, it examined theoretical and preceding studies and assumed that sub-factors of academic procrastination in middle school students such as behavioral, cognitive and emotional factors affected their academic achievement. It was assumed that the middle school students' stress had the direct mediating effects on their academic achievement. As a result of the research, it was found that sub-factors of academic procrastination in middle school students such as behavioral, cognitive and emotional factors had partially direct influence on their stress and academic achievement. It was shown that the analysis of mediating effects from middle school students' stress had no influence on the academic achievement. This study presented policy suggestions of academic achievement in middle school students as an alternative based on the research results.

  • This study examined the effects of geriatric depression and geriatric stress on cognitive impairment. In particular, the dementia groups were divided into Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. A normal group was used as the control group. For each group, the geriatric depression using the geriatric depression scale (GDS) and geriatric stress using the geriatric stress scale (GSS) was compared with the regression and correlation results of cognitive impairment. Statistical tests, such as descriptive statistics, Kruskall-Wallis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis, were performed. For the Alzheimer's group, the GDS and GSS correlated with the cognitive impairment, but only the GDS showed a cause-and-effect relationship with cognitive impairment. In particular, the male group with Alzheimer's disease showed clear confirmation. In addition, geriatric stress was found to be associated with geriatric depression. In conclusion, geriatric depression affects the cognitive impairment directly and geriatric stress affects the cognitive ability indirectly through geriatric depression. In this study, the Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and control groups had a small sample size. Therefore, the external validity in future studies can be increased using a larger sample size for each group.
