  • The purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of stress coping in the very old and elderly and to improve life satisfaction through stress reduction as the population ages. To this end, this study aimed to test the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between stress coping and life satisfaction among very old people. In particular, we paid attention to the differences in stress coping from the existing elderly population and took the view that they should be studied as an independent group. To confirm this, we analysed 275 men and women aged 85 years and older who responded to the fifth supplementary survey of the National Elderly Security Panel (KReIS) conducted by the National Pension Service. IBM SPSS 26 was used to test the mediating effect of social support on the effect of stress coping measures on life satisfaction in the very old elderly. The results of the significance test of the independent variables on the mediating variable showed that stress coping was positively significant, i.e., the higher the level of stress coping, the higher the life satisfaction. In addition, the results of the significance test of the effects of the independent variables and mediators on the dependent variable showed that coping with stress had a significant effect, and the mediator, social support, also had a significant effect on life satisfaction. Therefore, this study suggests the need for social support to improve the level of life satisfaction through coping with stress in the very old elderly.

  • This study examined the drinking status to determine the relationship between the AUDIT-K (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Korean) and job stress of firefighters. The study subject was 267 firefighters in areas C, K, and P, who were surveyed to investigate their drinking status and job stress. According to the study, the AUDIT-K was 152 people (56.9%) in the normal drinking group and 115 people (43.1%) in the problem drinking group. The most frequent answer of the frequency of drinking was 83 people (31.1%) in the 2-4 times of a month; the amount of drinking was 10 cups or more by 101 people (37.8%) in one sitting; the frequency of heavy drinking was every day in 77 people (28.8%). High group of job stress showed a significantly higher odds ratio with the problem drinking group (OR = 5.458, 95% CI = 1.108-26.886). Among them, the interpersonal relation conflict was found to be a major factor affecting AUDIT-K (OR = .332, 95% CI = .134 - .820). Therefore, their AUDIT-K scores can be lowered by reducing the job stress and interpersonal relation conflicts.

  • This study examined the stress reaction, resilience levels, and the effects of the stress reaction on the resilience among dental hygiene students. From July 11, 2016 to July 29, 2016, questionnaires were collected from 274 dental hygiene students in several areas. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS Statistics ver.21.0. The stress reaction level of dental hygiene students was found to be 2.59 out of 5 points and the resilience level was 4.47 out of 7 points. The stress reaction and resilience showed a significant negative correlation in Fatigue, Tension, Frustration, Anger, Depression, Aggression(p>0.001), and stomatization(p>0.05). In other words, the lower the resilience, the higher the stress reaction. The factors of stress reaction influencing the resilience were depression and somatization, which explained 25.6%(R2=0.256). Therefore, to enhance the resilience of dental hygiene students, it is important to investigation the stress reaction and there should be more concern with students who have higher depression and stomatization. In addition, efforts to control the stress reaction are needed.
