  • A high speed tracking control system for 6-6 Stewart platform manipulator is designed for performing the model based joint-axis sliding mode control. Because of the complex dynamics and kinematics of the Stewart platform manipulator, two computer systems, consisting of a PC and a DSP, are adopted, so that real time tasks are run in synchronous and asynchronous modes. It is experimentally proven that the proposed control system makes the convenience in implementation of model based tracking control, so that it can achieve effective tracking control under relatively high speed and additional payload conditions.

  • A novel translational 3-dof parallel mechanism is proposed and analyzed. The mechanism consists of three RRPS serial subchains and an additional passive 3-dof type serial subchain. Three RRPS serial subchains alone may form a structure of the 6-DOF Stewart Platform mechanism. However, in the proposed mechanism, an additional passive serial subchain acts as constraints to restrict the output motion of the mechanism in 3-DOF translational space. The closed form position solutions of the proposed mechanism and its first-order kinematic model are derived. Then its workspace size and kinematic characteristics are examined via kinematic isotropic index.

  • The kinematic analysis of Stewart platform manipulator(SPM) is carried out in order to reduce the calculation time for its forward kinematic solution when the iterative numerical method is employed. The kinematic equations for three substructures of the 6-3 SPM are newly derived by introducing Denavit-Hartenberg link parameters and using kinematic constraints associated with the SPM and substructure kinematics. It is shown that the forward kinematics can be easily solved from three nonlinear equations with three unknown variables only, leading to a great reduction in calculation time.

  • The dynamics of the 6-3 Stewart platform manipulator (SPM) is newly derived based on the kinematic relations particularly developed fur the SPM. The essence of the analysis is to deal with three subsystems of the SPM, each consisting of the command and feedback line links associated with two joined neighboring actuators. The dynamics of the command and feedback line links are first formulated using Lagrange and Newton-Euler method and then combined to derive the dynamic equations of motion fur the SPM. The derived nonlinear equations of motion are so computationally effective that it can be easily applied to real-time high-speed tracking control of 6-3 SPM.

  • A spatial 3 degrees-of-freedom mechanism employing Stewart Platform structure is proposed: the mechanism maintains the 3- RRPS structure of Stewart Platform but has an additional passive PRR serial sub-chain at the center area of the mechanism in order to constrain the output motion of the mechanism within the output motion space of the added PRR serial subchain. The forward and reverse position analyses of the mechanism are performed. Then the mechanism having both the forward and the reverse closed-form solutions is suggested and its closed form solutions are derived. It is confirmed, through the kinematic analysis of those two proposed mechanisms via kinematic isotropic index, that both the proposed mechanisms have fairly good kinematic characteristics compared to the existing spatial 3-DOF mechanisms in literature.

  • This work deals with the kinematic and dynamic optimal design of a six degree-of-freedom Stewart Platform mechanism, which is actuated by six prismatic cylinfers. Composite design index is employed to deal with multi-criteria based design in a systematic manner, and a sequential design method is suggested, in which the results from the kinematic optimization are employed in the following dynamic optimization.

  • This paper presents the development of a Parallel-Typed CNC Machining Tool. It is specially designed to machine a complex shaped workpiece by controlling the orientation of the tool. The inverse/direct kinematics of a parallel mechanism is derived and implemented in a PC based controller. With graphics icons, the GUI (Graphic User Interface) program is developed for the CNC programing. The calibration is accomplished by geometric constraint motion, which is a parallel motion of the platform with respect to a table. The calibration result is introduced and the future study is proposed.
