  • The mugilidae fishes are common euryhaline species that live in coastal marine waters to freshwater areas. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the mugilidae fishes still remain unresolved because of their morphological similarities. Among the mugilidae fishes, most commonly consumed in Korea, are grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) and red lip mullet (Chelon haematocheilus). It is generally called 'mullet' without distinguishing between two mullets. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the scientific names and common names of mullet species used in Korea from the domestic journals and Korean old documents. The scientific name of grey mullet is M. cephalus, but that of redlip mullet is C. haematocheilus. But the genus of redlip mullet is still mixed with Chelon, Mugil, and Liza. The standard name of two mullet is not distinguished in the Korean dictionary, but they were clearly distinguished in the Japanese, English, and Chinese dictionaries. In the ancient Korean references, the mullet was called 'Chieo' or 'Sueo'. In most of the old literature, the distinction between grey mullet and redlip mullet is not clear. However, in Jasaneobo, it was written separately from grey mullet and redlip mullet, and attaching "ga" was different from now. The Korean standard name of redlip mullet is 'gasungeo', however, the fishermen in Jeollado and Gyoungsangdo call it 'chamsungeo'. Considering the negative perception of 'ga' character, it is proposed to change 'cham(眞)' instead of 'ga(假)' to improve economic value of red lip mullet.

  • In order to find out the environmental factors influencing movement of common grey mullet, Mugil cephalus in funnel net fishing ground of the Dolsan-do, Yeosu southern sea area, the oceanographic factor such as the water temperature, isobath and tidal current were observed respectively, the water temperature was compared with the amount of common grey mullet caught by funnel net. Also, to investigate the movement direction of common grey mullet in same sea area, 160 common grey mullets of body length 22 to 51cm caught at funnel nets of the Dolsan-do southern sea area were marked and then released at 5 positions in 5 times. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. The water temperature at the funnel net fishing ground of Dolsan-do in 2002 was ranged from 6.9 to 27.4$^{\circ}C$. The water temperature was displayed a maximum value in August to increase from March and a minimum value in February of the ensuing year to decrease from September. The catches of gray mullet caught by funnel net were generally abundant from March to September, but decreased sharply from October. The optimum range of water temperature for the funnel nets fishing was situated between 15.0 to 25.0$^{\circ}C$. 2. The isobath from 6m to 13m in coast sea set up funnel nets were densely distributed and the depth more than 14m of isobath were widely spreaded to the open sea at Dolsan-do southern sea area. 3. The tidal current of the coast sea set up funnel nets flowed southward and northward along the coast ato ebb and flood tide respectively. The direction of tidal current to the open sea was southeast at ebb tide with the mean speed 43cm/sec, but northwest at flood with the mean speed 25cm/sec. 4. The recapture rate through the experiment duration showed 9.4%. The recapture rate in Gyedong area was very high value with 33.3% as compared with others. The movement of common grey mullet in Dolsan-do southern sea area trended toward a inner bay and north bound mainly.

  • Mullet is an important marine aquaculture fish species in Korea, with a total of 7,237 tons produced as of 2022, making it the 5th most produced marine aquaculture fish species. In this study, ectoparasites presumed to be isopods were discovered in the fins of farmed flathead grey mullet (average weight 550 g), and the characteristics of the parasites were confirmed. The length of the parasite was 5 to 18 mm, and 3 to 7 parasites were infected per fish. To analyze the characteristics of the parasites, molecular biological identification and phylogenetic analysis were performed using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, and it was confirmed to be most closely related to Nerocila japonica in the Cymothoidae family. To confirm the parasite control effect, a direct exposure drug sensitivity test was conducted on five types of aquatic drugs and fresh water, trichlorfon was confirmed to be effective.

  • Community structures and fish densit were investigated on three different types of artificial reefs, dice, turtle artificial reef and tubes, constructed in the Korean waters. Variations of fish fauna according to type of artificial reef and the proper artificial reef in each area for optimizing harvest were discussed. Fish were captured by trammel gill net during May, June, September and November, 1988 and both identified and counted. Fourty-five fish species were found in the artificial reefs. Of these, Sebastes spp., Hexagrammos otakii, Pleuronectidae, Navodon modestus and Stephanolepis cirrhifer showed high occurrence-frequency. The dominant species groups were coastal settlement, demersal or rock fishes such as Pleuronectidae, Rajiformes, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Navodon modestus, Hexagrammos otakii and Sebastes spp. in all of the Artificial reefs except the oceanic area of southern waters. Scomber japonicus was predominant in the oceanic area of southern waters. Composition of demersal, rock and pelagic fishes were different depending on the types of artificial reef. Dice artificial reefs were occupied by rock fish, on the other hand turtle artificial reefs were dominated by dermersal fish. Fish density was high at the dice artificial reef in all survey areas except the middle area of Eastern waters, with high fish density evident in the Tube artificial reef. Fish community structures were remarkably different between Dice and Turtle artificial reefs. The Tube artificial reef showed intermediate characteristics between the above two types of artificial reefs. The coastal areas of Southern waters and the middle and southern areas of Western waters revealed similar fish fauna. Results from the oceanic areas of Southern waters were well associated with the middle and southern areas of Eastern waters.

  • Fish fauna and community structures in freshwater were analyzed in the streams (12 stations) of the Bogil Island from May to September 2015. Total numbers of the sampled species and genus (9 families) were 21 and 17, respectively. Gobiidae was the most dominant taxa, which accounted for 47.6% (10 species) of the total species, and the relative abundance, based on the number of individuals, was 60.4% (1,157 individuals). Subdominant families were three taxa of Cyprinidae (3 species; 500 ind.), Mugilidae (2 species; 168 ind.) and Mugilidae (2 species; 128 ind.). The dominant species, based on the relative abundance, was Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (20.7%) and the subdominant species were Gymnogobius urotaenia (19.5%), Leucopsarion petersii (17.2%) and Chelon haematocheilus (8.5%). These species were composed of upstream-resident fish as well as migratory fishes, so the streams of the Bogil Island had unique characteristics in the fish compositions. Based on all the species sampled, 9 species (42.9%) were primary freshwater fishes, 11 species (52.4%) were peripheral fishes and 1 species (4.8%) was amphidromous fish. Korean endemic species and exotic species were not found in the streams of Bogil Island. According to the analysis of fish community structure, species richness index and species diversity index were highest (1.831, 1.957) in the Site 8 and lowest in the Site 4. In the meantime, the dominance index was highestin the Site 4 (1.00) and lowest in theSite 8 (0.17).

  • Seasonal variation in species composition of estuarine fauna in the Han River estuary was determined using monthly samples collected near Ganghwa Island by a bag net from February to December 2009. Total number of species was 86: 54 species of fishes, 16 species of shrimps of crustacean, 12 species of other crustacean such as craps and so on, 3 species of cephalopods and 1 species of jellyfish. Of a total of 86 species, Palaeman carinicauda (32.6%), Acetes japonicus (15.9%), Palaemon gravieri (9.9%), Portunus trituberculatus (7.7%) and Acetes chinensis (6.9%) were predominated in abundance. These 5 crustacean accounted for 73% of total. Abundance, biomass and diversity of Han River estuarine fauna were high in spring and autumn, indicating typical pattern of temperate area. Out of dominant species, the brackish residence species such as Coilia nasus, Chelon haematocheilus, Mugil cephalus, Synechogobius hasta, Lophiogobius ocellicauda, Tridentiger barbatus, Palaeman carinicauda, Palaemon gravieri were collected almost year-round and predominated in abundance. Coastal migratory fauna species such as Coilia mystus, Thryssa hamiltonii, Thryssa adelae, Sardinella zunasi, Engraulis japonicus, Portunus trituberculatus, Acetes japonicus, Collichthys lucidus, Pampus argenteus were most plentiful from spring through autumn. Their adult coastal migratory entered the estuary in spring and large numbers of their juveniles were grew in summer and autumn until moving out to deeper waters for over-wintering, indicating they use estuary as nursing ground. Diadromous fish such as Anguila japonica adults were collected in autumn during their downstream migration. Brackish fauna and crustacean, especially shrimps were predominant, and few contaminant indicator species collected in the Han River estuary, indicating this area maintains the characteristics of natural estuary ecosystem.

  • Garolim Bay is not only important fishing ground but also expected area for the tidal power plant. The construction and operation of tidal power plant will make change the ecosystem of this bay. Therefore, the actual fisheries stocks should be precisely understood for the effect estimation and overall utilization of the bay after the construction of the tidal power plant. During the study period from January through December in 1981, forty-six adult fishes species, 3 species of fish egg and 25 fishes larvae species have occurred in the bay. Considering the result on monthly distribution of eggs and larvae, the inner area of the bay seems to be important as nursing ground of larvae spawned at the outside bay in winter, e. g., Ammodytes personatus, and Enedrias sp. This inner bay is also major spawning ground for many species spawning in spring and summer, e. g., Gobiidae, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonica, etc. Taking into consideration the annual mean production for three years($1978{\sim}1980$), there are two major fishing seasons. The one is in May-June for Enedrias larvae stock, and the another in October-November for big eyed herring stock. For the mariculture stocks, short necked clam, oyster and laver are important species. After construction of the tidal power plant, the migratory species, i. e., larvae of Enedrias and Ammodytes personatus, Mugil cephalus, Konosirus punctatus, etc. will be directly damaged by the interuption of migration route. On the otter hand, the change of physico-chemical factors of seawater will also affect the ecosystem of the bay. Consequently, for the overall utilization of the bay after construction, the actual ecosystem including the fisheries stocks, must bs precisely revealed, and the mechanical designs, e. g., sluice position and its demension, should be also considered with these biological characters of the bay.
