Collaboration Between the Buhyu Monk Clan and the Uigyeom School of Monk Artists in the Late Joseon Dynasty: Buddhist Paintings for Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon (조선(朝鮮) 후기(後期) 부휴문중(浮休門中)의 불사(佛事)와 의겸파(義謙派) 불화(佛畫) -순천(順天) 송광사(松廣寺) 불화(佛畫) 조성(造成) 불사(佛事)를 중심으로-)

  • Most Korean Buddhist paintings from the late Joseon period were produced through collaborative projects (bulsa) between clans of Buddhist monks and monk artists (hwaseung), in which the monk clans would select themes and iconography for works that would then be produced by the artists and their school. Thus, any attempt to understand the Buddhist paintings of this period must consider not only the stylistic characteristics of the monk artists, but also the conditions at the respective temple at the time of production. Applying this methodology, this paper examines the collaboration between the Buhyu monk clan and the monk artist Uigyeom and his fellow artists (hereinafter, the "Uigyeom School") that took place in Honam (湖南) and surrounding areas in the eighteenth century. In particular, the paper reveals the strong influence that the Buhyu clan exerted on paintings that the Uigyeom School produced in 1724 and 1725 at Songgwangsa Temple, the clan's main temple. Following the paintings for Songgwangsa Temple, the Uigyeom School actively participated in similar projects at regional temples under the auspices of the Buhyu clan in Honam, Hoseo (湖西), and Yeongnam (嶺南). Consequently, the Buhyu clan granted Uigyeom several honorable titles-including "Hoseon" (毫仙), "Jonsuk" (尊宿), and "Daejeonggyeong" (大正經)-that were rarely conferred to a monk artist. Such acclaim helped Uigyeom's style of Buddhist painting to become widespread throughout the three southern provinces of Korea. The paintings for Songgwangsa Temple exemplify how the Buhyu clan and Uigyeom School collaborated to visualize the thoughts and philosophies of the Buhyu clan. For the Uigyeom School, this project served as the foundation for building the reputation and esteem of Uigyeom, who became one of the most esteemed and influential monk artists of the late Joseon period. As such, the paintings created for Songgwangsa Temple in 1724 and 1725 have great significance not only for Korean Buddhism, but also for art history in general.

  • This research has focused on CI development by regional government, with emphasis on CI case study of Suncheon, Chonnam Province. Suncheon is located at the most east pan of Chonnam Province and famous as a starting point of temple Tour. CI for Suncheon City was studied and developed to promote the pride and love for Suncheon and to enhance the unique image of Suncheon to the tourists.

A Bibliographical Study on 4 Newly Found Jeolla-do Editions of Bumoeunjungkyeongeonhae (새로 발견된 호남판(湖南板) <부모은중경언해(父母恩重經諺解)> 4종의 서지적(書誌的) 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce 4 different Jeolla-do editions of Bumoeunjungkyeongeonhae(父母恩重經諺解) which were newly found recently. Editions of Eunjungkyeong(恩重經) translated in Korean reach 36 editions including these 4 editions. Among 36 editions, 14 editions were published in Jeolla-do. 3 editions of these newly found editions have attachments of 'Sipbeopgyesong(十法界頌)' and 'Sippaljiok(十八地獄)'. The feature of these attachments' form was started since 1563 edition of Songgwangsa in Jeolla-do. In particular, 1628 edition of Baegamsa and 1653 edition of Naejangsa have same attachments. Therefore it is presumed that these 2 editions were copied and engraved based on Songgwangsa edition.

A Study on the Installation Period of Ventilation Roofs in the Suncheon Songgwangsa Temple (순천 송광사 요사채의 환기지붕 설치 시기에 관한 연구)

  • Suncheon Songgwangsa has unique ventilation roofs. In the meantime, these roofs have been known as a characteristic element of Songgwangsa architecture and a unique element of Korean traditional architecture. I would like to review the installation time of the ventilation roof and check the installation time through Songgwangsa's records and photographs. According to the results of this study, it was confirmed that the ventilation roofs installed in various buildings including the temple of Songgwangsa were installed between the 1920s and 1930s. This can be summarized by comparing the history of Songgwangsa and the history of each building of Songgwangsa by comparing the paintings of Songgwangsa in 1886 and 1915 with the photographs of 1920s and Songgwangsa in the 1930s. It is a matter of further study whether the installation of the ventilation roof of Songgwangsa Temple is influenced by the Japanese occupation period.

Making Techniques and Provenance Interpretation for Molding Clay of Four-Guardian Statues in Songgwangsa Temple, Suncheon, Korea (순천 송광사 사천왕상 소조토의 제작기법과 원산지 해석)

  • This study was investigated quantitative and objective making techniques for molding clay of Four-guardian statues in Songgwangsa temple. Also, basic data about the provenance of molding clay was acquired for the restoration using same materials when the conservation treatment is carried out. As a result, molding clay used the Four-guardian statues was identified the very similar soil regardless of layers and objects. But molding clay differed in particle sizes and contents of organic matters according to the first layer to finish layer in relatively thick parts. Also, it was used one kind of soil without the layer distinction in thin parts. The restoration soil was applied to genetically similar soil as molding clay of the Four-guardian statues, and showed a difference of careful selection degree according to the layers. As a result of the provenance interpretation, the soil distributing presumed provenance was confirmed the same origin as molding clay. Therefore, the soil is appropriate for the materials of conservation treatment. This result will contribute inorganic material research and conservation treatment for the clay molded Four-guardian statues in Korea.

The Analytical Study of Pigments on Fourguardian Statues in Song-gwang Buddhist Temple in Suncheon - Focusing on Pigments of Virupaksha - (순천 송광사 소조사천왕상 채색안료의 자연과학적 분석 - 서방광목천왕상 채색안료를 중심으로 -)

  • The Four-guardian statues in Song-gwang buddhist temple, Suncheon, Korea, have been remade in AD 1628 and have been repaired and repainted over several times since then. Therefore, the study of the pigments applied on the statues can provide good chance for investigation about pigments used in the late Chosun Period. Pigments on fragments from Gwang-mok(Virupaksha), one of the Four-guardian statues, have been analyzed by optical microscope, SEM-EDX and XRD in order to identify the components and compounds. Six types of materials were found from the fragments, which are soil layer with brown clay band, soil layer containing a lot of fibers, Korean paper with loose texture, Korean paper with dense texture, silk, and hemp textile. Presumably, the soil layer which have brown clay band is basis layer and the other layers are repaired layers. From comparative study for the components of the pigments, applied on upper and lower parts of the repaired layers, we have concluded that those repaired layers had been applied on the statue by the following order; basis layer ${\rightarrow}$ Korean paper with loose texture ${\rightarrow}$ soil containing a lot of fibers ${\rightarrow}$ silk ${\rightarrow}$ hemp textile and Korean paper with dense texture. In addition, the years that those materials were applied on the statue have been estimated as 1720~1891, 1926, 1946 and 1976, respectively. The distinct features of each age are as the following; lead white and copper chloride hydroxide are major white and green pigments before 1891, zinc white, barium white, emerald green, and ultramarine blue appear after 1926 and titanium white uprises around 1976. Our result presented here, study on pigments applied on traditional statues over several different periods, will provide good database for future study on pigments used for traditional painting in Buddist temples and Dancheong.

Wiggle Matching Radiocarbon Dates of a Buddhist Wooden Tablet (Bulpae) at Songkwangsa Temple, Suncheon, Korea (방사성탄소연대 위글매칭에 의한 순천 송광사 불패의 연대측정)

  • The objective of this study was to date a Buddhist wooden Tablet (No. 271) at Songkwangsa Temple, Suncheon, Korea, using wiggle matching of radiocarbon dates. For wiggle matching, three samples (2nd, 16th and 34~35th rings from inner side) in the pedestal of the Tablet were selected among total of 37 tree rings. Wiggle matching the radiocarbon dates of three samples resulted in A.D. 1660~1679 (95.4% confidence interval) for the outermost ring. This interval suggested the age of this tablet as the late 17th century, which was almost at the same age as other early Buddhist tablets in Korea.

Chemical Components of Korean Native Tea Plants (한국 자생차의 몇가지 화학성분 비교분석)

  • The significant chemical components estimating the quality of green tea were compared and analyzed in the shoots of Korean native tea plants. The results are summarized as follows. The contents of total nitrogen in tea leaves were in range of $3.59{\sim}4.89%$, and the tea plants grown wildly in Bosong Daewonsa, Hwasun Ssangbongsa, Shunchun Changchun-ri, Hadong Ssanggyesa. and the cultivated tea plants in Kangjin Jangwon Sanup had higher contents of total nitrogen. The contents of tannin ranged from 12.5 to 18.3%. The contents of tannin of Kuryoi Chonunsa (18.3%), Kangjin Baekryonsa (16.7%) and Naju Bulhoisa (16.4%) were higher than those of Yangkwang Chonma-ri (12.5%), Hampyong Yongam-ri (12.7%) and Yosu Udu-ri (12.8%). The contents of caffeine were in range of $2.21{\sim}3.11%$. The contents of caffeine of Kwangju Shamae Dawon (3.11%), Kangjin Jangwon Sanup (2.94%) and Shunchun Changchun-ri(2.87%) were higher than those of Tamyang Yanggak-ri(2.21%), Yosu Udu-ri(2.23%) and Kuryoi Hwaomsa (2.23%). The contents of vit. C were in range of $167.9{\sim}223.5mg/100g$. The contents of vit. C of Changsong Oshan-ri (167.9mg/100g), Shunchun Shongkwangsa (185.6mg/100g) and Yongkwang Chonma-ri (185.8mg/100g) were lower than those of Kwangju Shamae Dawon (291.5mg/100g), Kangjin Jangwon Sanup (271.8mg/100g) and Shunchun Changchun-ri (269.5mg/100g). The contents of chlorophyll were in range of $187.4{\sim}332.7mg/100g$, and the mean contents were in range of 242.0mg/100g. The contents of total amino acids were in range of $1,888{\sim}2,500mg/100g$. The content of total amino acid at Kangjin Jangwon Sanup was the highest as 2,500mg/100g, and that of Shunchon Shongkwangsa was the lowest as 1,888mg/100g. Results of this study suggest that the native tea plants naturally grown at Bosong Daewonsa, Hwasun Ssangbongsa, Shunchun Changchun-ri, Hadong Ssanggyesa, and the cultivated tea plants at Kangjin Jangwon Sanup show excellent quality in terms of abundance of total nitrogen and total amino acids, and less contents of tannin.

  • To figure out the problems of flame retardant treatment (FRT) on wooden buildings, field investigation and analysis of statistical data are performed. After FRT on historical wooden building, efflorescence and exfoliation showed most often. These problems appeared especially on column, rafter and Ga-gu (Ingredients for supporting structure of a roof) which are liberally spreaded. To compare before and after FRT, analyzed 20 elements using P-XRF. In this process, found sulfur which informs FRT. This helped set up nondestructive assay. Through this process, confirmed field application by analysis residue component of Songgwang-sa Temple.

  • This study is conducted to develop new termite colony elimination system that can control termite colony much faster, and to eco-environmentally prevent termite damage occurred in wooden cultural heritage. As a result of laboratory test, we developed a component system, of which fipronil 0.001% (w/w) treated bait was used as a suitable termite colony eliminator. This system can be monitored without taking off underground, and it makes regular monitoring much more efficient. The result of field test showed that 36 termite baiting devices among 367 installed devices were damaged by foraging termites. After baiting, all of termite colonies attracted to devices were eliminated or their activity clearly decreased.
