This study aims to understand whether the effect of poverty is translated to adolescents' mental health though their exposure to violence, which is aggravated by the dangerous environments of the neighborhoods. For this purpose, the study analyzes whether poor adolescents tend to reside on neighborhoods with toxic environments, and whether living in the disadvantageous neighborhood causes the poor adolescents to experience greater violence victimization and fear of violence, and eventually, greater depression and anxiety. The study utilizes secondary analysis of longitudinal data of the Korea Youth Panel Survey. Structural Equation Modeling is used as an analysis method. The study results reveals that poverty has both direct and indirect effects on the level of adolescents' symptoms of depression and anxiety. Especially, poverty affects adolescents' depression and anxiety indirectly through increasing the possibility to reside in more dangerous neighborhoods. Explaining more in detail, living in dangerous neighborhoods seems to expose adolescents more to violence and fear of violence in the neighborhoods and this experience increases the level of depression and anxiety. The study argues that the negative effects of poverty on adolescents should be examined from the view of neighborhood environments. Finally, the study discusses the importance of increasing neighborhood competency as practice and policy implication.

This paper examines what factors contribute to the entry of foreign investors to Chinese commercial banks from 1996 to 2008. Empirical results show that using survival analysis, size, liquidity ratio and non-interest incomes are important to foreign investors. This indicates that as Chinese banking system opened, foreign investors invest in bigger but financially weak banks. For Joint-Stock commercial banks, foreign investors invest in banks whose asset qualities and non-interest incomes are low. But for City commercial banks, foreign investors invest in banks that are big but have low liquidity ratios. This results indicate that because City commercial banks operate in only one city, foreign investors require minimum bank size to operate in that city.

The Harry Potter series is considered to represent the multicultural aspect of contemporary British society and to show critical perspectives of racism. This series, however, also includes many elements of British imperialism. This paper examines the ideas about education and Harry's role in relation to British imperialism. One of the main ideas prevalent in 19th century British boys' public schools was that people's blood origin is the most important element in determining their characteristics, ability and moral qualities. The students' inherited capacity and their family background are more highly regarded than their secondary learning and training. This reflects a 19th century concept that ultimately, inborn quality makes 'a hero', a truth presented in the educational policies of Hogwarts. Hogwarts' educational policies and systems can also be related to 'developmentalism', which defines children as imperfect, in-progress and incomplete, thus needing proper training and discipline. As this concept functioned to justify the control of children while educating them, Hogwarts adopts diverse controlling devices and oppressive policies, which are mainly justified in the name of education. On the one hand, child characters are controlled and oppressed by the school authorities, on the other hand, some of the students such as Harry have remarkable magic powers enough to resist the adult authority and even to save the magic society from the evil power. Harry plays dual roles, which the British boys of the Empire were assigned from their society; they are important heirs to conquer the 'evil' or 'barbarous' world but need to be obedient to a 'good' authority to achieve the mission. Harry's magic power and self-discipline ultimately contribute to fulfilling Dumbledore's mission, which mirrors 19th century British boys' roles as the heirs of the British Empire.

Retrospecting the past 60 years of interactions between the executive and the legislature in Korea, it is found that the Korean National Assembly is neither a minimal legislature nor a marginal legislature any more. The symbolic role of the Assembly has acquired a remarkable growth and profound strength and there is no need to worry about institutional viability any further. However, its role as a resolver or manager of social conflicts is still under the dominance of the executive and shows even an indication that it might be worsened. Such incapability of the legislature owed much to the vertical control from the outside especially during the authoritarian regimes, however, nowadays it owes much to the inability of consensus building among the out-bursting controversial and horizontal opinions inside of it. Not sufficient managerial capability required for exercising autonomous decision making power efficiently is a major detrimental factor. It traces back to the inability of party politics and demassifying political leadership. Normalization of party politics is identified as one of the essential prerequisites for Korean political development in this regard.

This research investigates the role of causal inferences about the endorser's motivation - specifically, dispositional versus situational attributions - and their impact on persuasion of noncelebrity testimonial advertisements. Based on the correspondent inference theory and the relevant literature, it is posited that consumers will generate predictable patterns of attributional responses to testimonial messages, which in turn will influence ad and brand evaluations. An experiment with 335 consumer panelists, after a pilot experiment with the college student sample, has been conducted. Results suggest the greater impact of dispositional attributions than situational attributions on persuasion of noncelebrity testimonial messages and general evocations of situational attributions regardless of the levels of endorser credibility and dispositional attributions. On the basis of the findings from this study, theoretical and practical implications are discussed, as are directions for future research.

Since launching a spoonful yogurt 'Yoplait' for the first time in the nation, Binggrae Co. has established the reputation of the Yoplait brand, and secured its leading position in the yogurt market. This study examined how Binggrae as a market pioneer (in the spoonful yogurt market) or a market follower(in the drinking yogurt market) has developed and responded to the yogurt market in which competition between companies are becoming fierce. Instead of being bound by conventional competition rules, Binggrae was found to have implemented distinctive marketing strategies for new products. That is, providing new values, the company led the market to change the paradigm of competition in the yogurt market. Together with long-term strategic marketing plans to manage the assets of the Yoplait brand, Binggrae Yoplait is required to put continuous efforts into marketing to lead the market.

This paper intends to suggest the positive, ecological vision of sustainability in Karen Hesse's Out of the Dust that Billie Jo Kelby recovers herself through her readjustment of interior consciousness and outer environment in her tragic situations caused by the Dust Bowl. In spite of her desires for happiness and affluence of home, she loses her mother and brother, and her musical talent as a pianist, and lies in self-abandonment. But she finally raises up herself with her courage and patience, reconciliating with the nature and ameliorating the community by taking care of the devastated landscapes. Hence it is appropriate to approach the loss-recovery process of nature and consciousness with ecological solutions, The Dust Bowl breaks down human mind and body, and eventually leads to the situations of despairs and death. Hesse proposes the primary solution that humans should reconstruct their interior consciousness and participate in recovering the nature because humans are inevitably linked with nature. In this novel, the nature takes a dynamic and active role as a catalyst, reconciling the self with other humans and settling with the conflicting situations in history and culture. This verse novel as an active, self-ordering, and corrective process gives the more intense ecological message. As Hesse defines the setting of Dirty Thirties as a channel of energy, she creates the utmost effects of ecological process that human and environment are part of a total situation, representing the transactional formulation, each conditioned by conditioning to the other. Therefore Billie Jo takes her part as an interpreter and actualizes herself, understanding the nature with metaphor and symbol. Eventually Billie Jo realizes that she should rebuild her environment not out of the dust but in the dust, accepting the reality of Dust Bowl.

Successful Intelligence (SI) developed by R. Sternberg has impacted on various fields such as education and industry, providing with intuitive view-points concerning the definition, nature, and measurement of intelligence. It would be a timely work to review how SI has been progressed, what contributions it made, what it has influenced on intelligence research in Korea, and what the implications of SI for future research are. With that in mind, this review is composed of several sections. First, an overview of the SI's historical development and main characteristics and contributions is presented with three distinct periods: Era of the Componential Theory, of Triarchic Theory, and of Successful Intelligence. Second, Selected researches conducted in Korea based on SI are summarized. Lastly, future research for validation of SI is discussed.

In this paper, we estimate a time series model of energy demand in the industrial sector with an asymmetric response to energy prices. Including the asymmetric response to energy prices in the model strengthens robustness of the cointegration relationship and reduces the variation of the estimated coefficients across the estimating methods. We find that rising energy prices have a larger impact on energy demand than falling energy prices, with the largest impact occurring when energy prices rise to new highs. The estimation results are partially improved when using gross output rather than value added as a measure of production. Using single equation methods to estimate the asymmetric response model, the elasticity of gross output ranged from 1.05 to 1.09 and the elasticity of price-rise ranged from -0.48 to -0.56, which is similar to the results of international studies.

In recent times, short videos have become highly popular among college students, serving as a vibrant platform for information sharing and self-expression, while fostering a unique culture. However, their excessive consumption can lead to negative effects like reduced concentration and information overload, necessitating a balanced approach and self-control. Our study examined the impact of different characteristics of short video media on college students' organizational commitment and mental health. The findings highlighted that attributes such as accessibility and immediacy positively influence different levels of engagement, and that organizational commitment significantly affects students' mental well-being. The research underscores the importance of judicious use of short video media to positively affect college students' mental health.
