  • Patients, particularly elderly patients, need nursing appropriate to their characteristics and pace, whereas 'fast nursing' is actually emphasized in Korea. Hence, this study attempts to identify the characteristics of 'slow nursing' in Korea. Walker & Avant's approach to concept analysis was performed through a literature review on the concept of 'slow nursing.' A literature search and concept analysis, using the keywords of 'slow,' 'slow nursing' and 'slow prescription' in Pubmed, Riss, NDSL, DBPIA, and Google Scholar from 2000 to 2019, yielded the following attributes of 'slow nursing': 'respect for the speed of the subject,' 'carefulness,' 'comfort in the process,' 'participation' and 'consideration of the meaning of life.' Model cases were derived based on these attributes. Predisposing factors involved in 'slow nursing' include patient malfunction, psychological deflection, indifference, fear of treatment, and lack of willingness to live. The outcomes were a discovery of patients' potential capacities, recovery of confidence, health promotion, improved communication with medical staff, confidence, and self-integrity. It is expected that the development of measurement tools using the attributes of 'slow nursing' would contribute to patient nursing and research in the future.

  • The notion of responsibility, which has now gained a firm foothold as one of the fundamental notions of philosophy and its neighboring disciplines, became the subject of philosophical enquiry only in the 19th century by Kierkegaard, who delved into the morality of critical self-awareness in ethical responsibility of the absolute self; and Nietzsche, who put emphasis on the responsibility of the sovereign self in coping with the problems of the future. Nietzsche is the first philosopher who took issue with the diminishment (Verkleinerung) of humanity-what he called human being's greatest disease-that swept Europe at that time. Concerns about Europe's future were the key movens of Nietzsche's philosophy revolving around the advent of nihilism in Europe and its solutions. He prepared alternative solutions in deep awareness that the ethics of good and evil firmly rooted in the traditional metaphysics and Christianity would not even catch the depth and breadth of the big problem of globalization brought about by modernism, let alone solve it. Nietzsche devoted his whole life to disseminating the knowledge that the future of humankind depends on removing these old ethics. This article traces Nietzsche's reflections on the ethical event of responsibility and provides an overview of the purview and scope contained in the meaning covered by the notion of responsibility in his philosophy beyond common norms and values.

  • The objective of this study is to classify the conversations in Chinese textbooks into four social units (speech community, speech situation, speech event, speech act) adopted by Dell Hymes (1972), and suggest application of the results involving the conversation to the curriculum of Chinese education. Towards this end, this study assumes every conversation in the Chinese textbooks as coordination of specific speech events and acts under specific situations. This study introduces the concept of social unit adopted by Dell Hymes (1972), and elucidates their role in conversation. Thus, this study reconsiders the conversations recorded in the textbooks not from a morphological or syntactic viewpoint but from a speech perspective. Finally, this study suggests effective use of the results in the Chinese conversation classes.

  • This study analyzes the characteristics regarding the image of women in feminist magazine covers. Along with fundamental analysis of the female image that appeared on the covers of feminist magazines and the grammar of visual design by Kress and van Leeuwen, a methodology of socio semiotic research, this study explores the structure and driving principles of symbols that have organized female images. The subject of analysis is set to 200 covers of magazines published from the 1960s to the 2010s. Through analysis, first, female images represented in the covers of feminist magazines showed women of various races, age groups, appearances, and occupations, and the degree od emphasis on the physique was fewer and natural-looking. Second, the study confirms that feminist magazines actively utilize representational and interactive metafunctions to deliver symbolic information such as messages of confidence, strength, and courage. Third, the organized symbols affected the recipient's understanding and interpretation of images. I hope this study helps to contemplate ways to express female images and the dynamic and diverse aspects of women.

This study investigated teachers' curricular expertise that is required for teachers' professionalism, autonomy, and accountability to cope with the increasing school curriculum autonomy. Teachers in the future school are expected to explore and develop school level curriculum within a given school context. Through literature reviews, domestic and foreign case studies, and survey of teachers, this study examined difficulties in science teachers' exercise of their professionalism on curriculum organization and implementation at the school level. Difficulties in exercising teachers' curricular expertise include lack of actual autonomy in curriculum operation at the school level, inadequate infrastructures, demanding accountability based on students' achievement results, lack of time for reflection, and lack of recognition for teachers as independent curriculum designers. In the conclusion section, a couple of ways to solve these difficulties are suggested including expansion of actual autonomy, activation of teachers' participation in policy decision making, reinforcement of qualitative components in school assessment, diversification of the teacher's career ladder, and activation of teachers' participation in professional learning communities.
