Lowering observers' view-height may increase the amount of occlusion across objects in a visual scene and prevent the accurate identification of the objects in the scene. Based on this possibility, memory stimuli in relation to their expected views from different heights were displayed in this study. Thereafter, visual short-term memory (VSTM) performance for the stimuli was measured. In Experiment 1, the memory stimuli were presented on a grid-background drawn according to linear perspectives, which varied across observers' three different view-heights (high, middle, and low). This allowed the participants to remember both the color and position of each memory stimulus. The results revealed that testing participants' VSTM performance for the stimuli under a different memory load of two set-sizes (3 vs. 6) demonstrated an evident drop of performance in the lowest view-height condition. In Experiment 2, the performance for six stimuli with or without the grid-background was tested. A similar pattern of performance drop in the lowest condition as in Experiment 1 was found. These results indicated that different view-heights of an observer can change the amount of occlusion across objects in the visual field, and the sensory interference driven by the occlusion may further influence VSTM performance for those objects.
This study was designed to examine the influence of task appropriate processing on prospective memory(PM). The TAP was manipulated with list type within study phase and association category type among PM target words. Associated word lists used for ongoing task were consisted of semantically associated lists and orthographically associated lists. Target words for PM task were consisted of city names or words for ending with the letter of '도'. According to the TAP view, PM performance would be better in the condition of task appropriate processing rather than in the condition of task inappropriate processing. Total fifty students volunteered for two experiments for the present study. The main finding was that PM performance was influenced by the task appropriate processing with ongoing task. In other words, PM performance was facilitated when association type between ongoing list and PM target word was same. Second, ongoing task performance was also influenced by task appropriated processing. These results were discussed in task appropriated processing theory and previous studies.
As the proportion of old people in contemporary societies steadily increases, the influence on cognitive rehabilitation strategy of the memory deficit associated with normal and pathological aging grows greater as well. This paper reviewed the current memory rehabilitation techniques for older adults. In the first part of this article, human memory systems as a framework for understanding memory aging were considered. In the second part, research findings concerning memory performance in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease were reviewed. Finally, recent evidence for the kinds of memory rehabilitation procedures with proven efficacy were offered. The existent memory rehabilitation technique have focused on prompt of residual explicit memory, use of preserved implicit memory, utilization of memory external memory aids. A suggestion of memory training based on brain plasticity as a novel approach is offered.
In this study, memory for emotional words was compared between extraverts and introverts, employing signal detection analysis to distinguish differences in discriminative memory and response bias. Subjects were presented with a study list of emotional words in an encoding session, followed by a recognition session. Effects of task difficulty were examined by varying the nature of the encoding task and the intervals between study and test. For an easy task, with a retention interval of 5 minutes (Study I), introverts exhibited better memory (i.e., higher d') than extraverts, particularly for low-frequency words, and response biases did not differ between these two groups. For a difficult task, with a one-month retention period (Study II), performance was poor overall, and only high-frequency words were remembered; also extraverts adopted a more liberal criterion for 'old' responses (i.e., more hits and more false alarms) for positive emotional-valence words. These results suggest that as task difficulty drives down performance, effects of internal control processes become more apparent, revealing differences in response biases for positive words between extraverts and introverts. These results show that extraversion can distort memory performance for words, depending on their emotional valence.
The present study was conducted to examine the effect of meta-cognitive strategy and transfer appropriate processing(TAP) on prospective memory performance. In two experiments, encoding strategy for PM target words was manipulated by instructions. Participants who were assigned to meta strategic condition were engaged to rate task difficulty(EOL) in addition to predict their own performance(JOL), while participants in cognitive strategy condition were to remember target words by pleasantness ratings and sentence generation. In experiment1 and experiment 2, all participants in both conditions performed not only TAP ongoing task but also TIP ongoing task. Results revealed the benefit of meta cognition and transfer appropriate processing on PM performance. Furthermore, the benefit of TAP was diminished in cognitive strategy condition. There were no-costs on judgement tasks across conditions. The findings suggest that meta-cognition allows to sustain PM targets and intention without regard to cognitive resource.
The distinction between short-term store (STS) and long-term store (LTS) has been made in the perspective of information processing. Memory system theorists have argued that memory could be conceived as multiple memory systems beyond the concept of a single LTS. Popular memory system models are Schacter & Tulving (994)'s multiple memory systems and Squire (987)'s the taxonomy of long-term memory. Those m models agree that amnesic patients have intact STS but impaired LTS and have preserved implicit memory. However. there is a debate about the nature of the long-term memory impairment. One model considers amnesic deficit as a selective episodic memory impairment. whereas the other sees the deficits as both episodic and semantic memory impairment. At present, it remains unclear that episodic memory should be distinguished from semantic memory in terms of retrieval operation. The distinction between declarative memory and nondeclarative memory would be the alternative way to reflect explicit memory and implicit memory. The research focused on the function of frontal lobe might give clues to the debate about the nature of LTS.
In this paper, active shape control of composite structures actuated by shape memory alloy (SMA) wires is presented. The thermo-mechanical behaviors of SMA wires were experimentally measured. Hybrid composite structures were established by attaching SMA actuators on the surfaces of graphite/epoxy composite beams using bolt-joint connectors. SMA actuators were activated by phase transformation, which induced by temperature rising over austenite finish temperature. In this paper, electrical resistive heating was applied to the hybrid composite structures to activate the SMA actuators. For (aster and more accurate shape/deflection control of the hybrid composite structure, PID feedback controller was designed from numerical simulations and experimentally applied to the SMA actuators.
The loss of semantic knowledge and impairments in semantic associations by semantic category is gaining increasing attention, as indicators of early-stage cognitive decline. As such, we assigned semantic association task (SAT) to normal elderly (NE) and those with subjective memory impairment (SMI) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to examine their performance by semantic subcategories and the differences in error patterns. We found a significant difference in the number of correct response and reaction time under the SAT categories among the three groups, with the highest performance observed in 'function' and the lowest performance in 'superordinate' and 'part/whole'. Moreover, the error frequency was the lowest in NE, followed by those with SMI and MCI, with the latter two groups showing a significant increase in no-response. Our findings demonstrate the varying extent and process of impairments in the semantic network by category over different stages of cognitive decline. Thus, we proposed SAT performance as an indicator to detect and follow-up on cognitive decline in elderly with cognitive disorder.
The present study was conducted to examine the differences and correlations between verbal fluency and story comprehension according to the working memory(WM) capacity, and to find out what WM factors influence the linguistic competence in Alzheimer's disease(AD) and vascular dementia(VaD) groups each consisting of 15 patients. The results of their performance produced firstly significant differences in phonemic fluency, story comprehension, delayed recall and recognition task between the two groups. Further analysis shows that VaD group had significant correlations between the scores of story comprehension and the recognition test scores additionally. These findings suggest that it is possible to differentiate the two groups even by story comprehension tasks and WM. In conclusion, the clinical application of the results is likely to contribute to appropriate treatment plans and effective interventions for elderly with AD and VaD as well as to improve the classification criteria for both types of dementia.
The ZG-machine is a space-efficient G-machine, which exploits a simple encoding method, called tag-forwarding, to compress the heap structure of graphs. Experiments on the ZG-machine without garbage collection shows that the ZG-machine saves 30% of heap space and the run-time overhead is no more than 6% than the G-machine. This paper presents the results of further experiments on the ZG-machine with the garbage collector. As a result, the heap-residency of the ZG-machine decreases by 34% on average although the run-time increases by 34% compared to the G-machine. The high rate of the run-time overhead of the ZG-machine is incurred by the garbage collector. However, when the heap size is 7 times the heap-residency, the run-time overhead of the ZG-machine is no more than 12% compared to the G-machine. With the aspect of reduced heap-residency, the ZG-machine may be useful in memory-restricted environments such as embedded systems. Also, with the development of a more efficient garbage collector, the run-time is expected to decrease significantly.
