  • This paper analyzed 20 teaching practices of elementary mathematics lessons which were recognized as effective instruction by the local educational offices throughout Korea, using an analytic framework with 4 main domains (i.e., curriculum and content, teaching and learning, classroom environment and atmosphere, and assessment) and a total of 44 sub-elements. The results of this study showed that the lessons focused on the key mathematics concepts according to the national mathematics curriculum and learning objectives, managed students in terms of shared rules within each classroom, and evaluated students' understanding of the concepts at the end of the lesson. However, the lessons did not foster students' calculation skills and only partly used either technology or game. Building on the related studies, this paper included implications of implementing high-quality mathematics instruction.

  • Corona, which first broke out in 2020, has caused many changes in many parts of society. Education was not an exception to this change. Teachers had to prepare online classes and students were asked to participate in it without sufficient preparation. Regarding online learning, many studies, in the field of developing teaching module and material or observing the satisfaction of online class, were conducted but there was no study based on how online class is happening in school. Therefore, this study was to investigate the current situation and satisfaction of online class for high school students and explored the relationship between sub-elements of mathematics learning and the level of satisfaction of online learning. As a result, mathematics online class was generally conducted in the form of real-time interactive classes and students felt a little satisfied with it. However, some conflicting opinions were expressed on the continuation of mathematics online learning. In addition, the study found that the higher level of satisfaction students have with online class, the difference appears in the sub-elements of learning mathematics such as values of mathematics, and motivation to learn, willingness to learn mathematics, learning strategies according to the safisfactory level of online class.

  • Current mathematics curriculum of South Korea suggests that students learn mathematics in school with calculators except that the aim of the math lessons is to achieve calculation skills, but we can't be sure that elementary school students use calculators in math lessons of school. Actually we don't have enough data to identify how many elementary school students use calculators in math lessons. The aims of this study are to compare the ratio of elementary school students using calculators in math lessons of school between 20 countries and to analyse the relation between using calculators in math lessons and the achievements of math through $4^{th}$ grade mathematics test of TIMSS 2015. The results of this study are two. One is that generally $4^{th}$ grade students did not use calculators in math lessons. The other result is that generally there is no relation between using calculators in math lessons and the achievements of the math test through $4^{th}$ grade mathematics test of TIMSS 2015. Only in Hong Kong SAR, students without using calculators have higher achievements than students using calculators. In England and USA, students using calculators have higher achievements than students without using calculators. Finally, researcher in this study suggests some implications on using calculator in elementary schools.

  • Considerable efforts have been attempted to identify what makes high-quality mathematics instruction, including diversity and variability across different educational systems and cultural contexts. As the instructional elements related to effective mathematics teaching can be commonly applied to different content domains, they may be efficient in selecting such teaching. However, such elements may not reflect on the specific but essential features of each domain. This paper compared and contrasted two sets of measurement teaching practices, which were recognized as good instruction, in terms of how the key elements of measurement domain were implemented. As such this paper is expected to accumulate significant knowledge about elements of effective mathematics instruction that are specialized in a particular content domain of measurement. This paper suggests that domain-specific approach be considered in studying good mathematics teaching.

  • In this study, we designed and implemented a instruction emphasizing mathematical argument for fifth-grade students and analyzed the teaching practices. Through a literature review related to instruction emphasizing mathematical argument, we organized a teaching model of five phases that explain why the general claim that the sum of consecutive odd numbers equals a square number is true: 1) noticing patterns, 2) articulating conjectures, 3) representing through visual model, 4) arguing based on representation, 5) comparing and contrasting. Then, we analyzed the argumentation stream by phases to observe how the instruction emphasizing mathematical argument is implemented in the elementary classroom. Based on the results of this study, we discuss the implications of teaching a mathematical argument in elementary school.

  • The mainstream approaches to understand the characteristics of North Korean mathematics education focus on the comparative studies between South and North Korean mathematics curriculum and textbooks through literature analysis. These approaches make it possible to understand what is taught in mathematics class of North Korean school. But it is hard to find any information on how teachers teach mathematics and how students learn it. This study searches North Korean class environment, preparation for class, teaching and learning methods to understand mathematics class in North Korea as they really are. It is extremely difficult to make first-hand observations on North Korean class. Instead, this paper adopted interviews with teachers who have experience of teaching in North Korean school and now live in South Korea. By doing this, it is possible to get some understanding, although somewhat limited, the real aspects of North Korean mathematics class. As a result, there are distinct differences in the characteristics of North Korean mathematics class environment, preparation for class, teaching and learning methods, compared with South Korean.

  • This research had investigated the teaching practice in the mathematics classrooms with immigrant students to describe how effectively mathematics teachers create inclusive learning environment of mathematics. The analysis of the data from the elementary schools suggests that teaching practice in the class was consistent to the criteria for 'contextualization of students' lived experience' and 'mathematical conversation'. However, while the quantitative results suggested that the teachers showed high expectation to their students in their teaching, the qualitative analysis revealed the teacher's beliefs and attitudes against providing equitable educational opportunity for every student. In the middle school classrooms, it was found that the teaching practices were not compatible to the goals of multicultural mathematics education. The analysis of the survey data regarding teachers' multicultural competence suggests that the teachers possessed rather advan]ced understanding of multicultural mathematics education but they need materials and pedagogy for classroom teaching from multicultural perspectives.

  • One of the main purposes in prospective elementary teacher education is to prepare for teaching each subject matter. For this purpose, it is necessary to explore how prospective teachers may analyze elementary mathematics instruction and they perceive their analytic foci. This study probed in what ways prospective teachers analyzed elementary mathematics instruction using two video cases. The results of this study showed that prospective teachers focused mainly on instructional strategies, specifically with regard to whether such strategies would be adequate both for mathematical content to be taught and for students' characteristics. They also focused on the effective use of instructional materials as well as the case teacher's adequate feedback. Prospective teachers claimed to have analytic foci not only on the degree of attainment of instructional purposes but also on students' responses and interest. Given this result, this paper includes several issues related to help prospective teachers prepare for better teaching.
