  • Nowadays the education of Mathematics is more important than any other courses in the school. But the most students have felt the difficulty and uncomfortableness in studying Mathematics, especially the geometry course. Moreover teachers also consider that the teaching of geometry is the hardest part of Mathematics. Therefore we suggest an effective method of teaching the geometry course for the middle school students. We provide the activity papers which contain mathematics problems based on the practical life of students. And we analyze the effects of the activity papers using the questionnaire.

  • Tessellations are the pattern of iterations of geometric transformation. We can find them in the works of Escher, the famous Dutch artist. Also, We can find the beauty of tessellations in traditional Korean house doors, old Korean architecture, palace walls, and so forth. In this article, the figures of patterns we present are a pig, a frog, Tchiucheonwhang (the mascot of Korean football supporters), and figures by Escher, using the computer geometric program, GSP (Geometer's Sketchpad). We wanted to investigate the gender differences on students' achievement and disposition toward mathematics in constructing tessellations. The results indicated that if students were supported with well prepared instructional materials which helped students make their own figures, female students in particular would be more interested in learning geometric transformation.

  • This study conducted experimental problem posing activities using real-life materials. This study investigated the changes on students' mathematical thoughts and attitudes through the activities. This study is conducted via participation of students in a 5th grade class of N elementary school located in Daegu city. As a qualitative case study, this study focused on processes of problem posing rather than results. The problems applying new situations appear, and the used mathematical terms, units, and figures became more practical. The numbers of problems made are increased gradually, and more complex conditions are added as activities are performed. Most of the students revealed interests about problem making activities.

  • In this study, we conducted classroom activities that are exploring and explaining visualized materials for problem solving of school mathematics with pre-service teachers in 2007~2009. After finishing these classroom activities, pre-service teachers recorded an afternote that includes changes of their thinking about mathematics and mathematics education through these activities in this study. We collected various opinions of pre-service mathematics teachers. From the analysis these data, we searched educational effects of our classroom activities. Through conducting the practice like these classroom activities of our study, pre-service mathematics teachers will have an opportunity of a practical training that supports the teaching of mathematical problem-solving. Moreover their PCK will be enhanced. Also, They will learn a good way to realize the aim of school mathematics curriculum.

  • This study aims to inspect the effect of the yungbokhap education on the development of students' mathematical competence by analyzing students' mathematical discourse in math-based yungbokhap instruction designed by Moon(2014). Specifically, this research focused on the analysis of students' participation structure. The reuslts shows that the students' competence for mathematical communication and inquiry has been improved through the instruction. In particular, the students were increasingly engaged with consensual talk. Also, in the beginning stage, the students tended to unconditionally criticize for others' mathematical opinion. Through the class participation, they gradually developed the competence to express their mathematical ideas to their peers with reasonable mathematical bases. These results suggests that the mathematics-based yungbokhap instruction has positively contributed to the improvement of students' mathematical competence. Based on the results, this paper presented implications for mathematics-based yungbokhap instrcution.

  • In this research, we designed an educational activities of exploring mathematics programs in a course of mathematics education in teacher's college. We divided future mathematics teachers into 8 groups and suggested 8 mathematics programs to them. Each group explored one mathematics program. We asked to future mathematics teachers exploring some cases that use effectively a mathematics program in the teaching of school mathematics. In the process of an exploring, we designed some activities of teaching and learning. We provided opportunities of long-term exploration, group learning, presentations, exercises, reflections to mathematics teachers. As a result, future mathematics teachers acquired basic knowledge on the usage of mathematics programs in school mathematics textbook. In addition, their capabilities that are needed to explore mathematics programs have been enhanced. Also they had learned the teacher's positive attitude through the activities of teaching and learning.

  • The semiotic approach to the mathematics education has been studied in last 20 years by PME, ICME conferences. New cultural developments in multi-media, digital documents and digital arts and cultures may influence mathematical education and teaching and learning activities. Hence semiotical interest in the mathematics education research and practice will be increasing. In this paper the basic ideas of semiotics, such as Peirce triad and Saussure's dyad, are introduced with some mathematical applications. There is some similarities between traditional research topics for concept, representation and social construction in mathematics education research and semiotic approach topics for the same subjects. some semiotic applications for an arithmetic problem for work, induction, deduction and abduction syllogisms with respect to Peirce's triad, its meaning in scientific discoveries and learning in geometry and symmetry.

  • Mathematics is to reflect on your or other people's psychological mathematic activities. Thus, learners need to reflect on their mathematical activities in order to cultivate mathematical thinking attitude and perceive learning contents. For this study, first of all, two classes of the fifth grade (29 students in experimental group and 31 students in control group) in 'Y' elementary school in Dae-gu city were selected as research targets and post-test of learning achievement and mathematical attitude examination were carried out in order to verify the differences of learning achievement and mathematical attitudes between experimental and control groups. The findings of this study mean that students' learning achievement and mathematical attitudes can be improved by applying mathematical reflective activities to the actual class.
