Comparison of Perception Differences about Stereotype of a Mathematician between the Mathematically Gifted Students and Non-gifted Students in Elementary School (초등수학영재와 일반학생의 수학자 이미지에 대한 인식 비교)

  • To improve elementary mathematics education teaching and learning method and environment, the survey of elementary school students' attitude toward mathematics and their images on mathematician was conducted to mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students of 6th grade of elementary school. The study results show that mathematically gifted elementary students have deeper understanding of mathematician and their works than non-gifted students. But they are not enthusiastic to be a mathematician. On average, awareness of domestic mathematician is turned to be significantly low. And most students don't know well of mathematician. Since this study was applied to the limited range of objects, significant results were not shown in external and internal image of mathematician. Thus, the future study needs to generalize the study results by compensating this defect and developing various materials to improve students' attitude toward mathematics and images of mathematician.

Mathematics as Engaged Practice: Professional Mathematicians' Conceptions of Mathematics (전문수학자의 수학에 대한 신념)

  • This research took an interpretive approach to investigate professional mathematicians' conception of mathematics, particularly focusing on their beliefs about the nature of mathematics as a discipline, and the relation between the discipline and themselves as knowers. The analysis shows that the professional mathematicians consider mathematics as human practice. For mathematicians, mathematics as a product is considered as a crystalization of practice that emerges in the dialogical relation between the discipline and its practitioners. This dialogical nature of mathematics suggests that professional mathematicians consider mathematics not as isolated fixed knowledge but as something they are playfully engaged with. The results of this research extend our understanding of what mathematics is and provide an alternative perspective on mathematics to make the learning of mathematics more accessible by dismantling the myth of the rationalist pure objectivity in mathematics.

Mathematical Life of Emmy Noether (여성수학자 에미 뇌터의 수학적 삶의 역사)

  • In this paper, the life of Emmy Noether is reviewed in context of today's society where progress in social and educational equality for women have not significantly impacted the participation of women mathematician at the highest level of mathematics study. Recent studies have shown that there is little or no gender difference in mathematics performance if the women are treated equally in the country. Yet, the number of women scientists/mathematicians at the university level or related research centers are very low for all countries including the U.S. as well as Korea. Emmy Noether became a mathematician in early 20th century Germany where women were discouraged(not allowed) from even studying mathematics at the University. She overcame gender, racial, and social prejudices of the time to become one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century as a founding contributor of Abstract Algebra. Overcoming all the difficulties to focus on the study of mathematics to contribute at the highest level of mathematics provides an example of leadership for both men and women that is relevant today. Especially for women, Emmy Noether's life is a study in perseverance for the love of mathematics that proves that there is no gender difference even at the highest level of mathematics.

역사속 과학인물 - 중국의 '산학계몽' 맥 이어준 조선조 수학자 "김시진(1618~1667년)"

  • 조선조 현종때 관리였던 김시진(1618~1667년)은 중국판 수학책 "산학계몽"을 우리나라서 인쇄 보급해 수학자 양성에 큰 공을 세운 인물이다. 중국 송나라때인 1299년 주세걸이 쓴 이 책은 중국의 수학사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 귀중한 책이었다. 그런데 이 책이 5백년의 세월이 흐르는 동안 중국에서는 사라져버려 조선에서 구해다가 다시 찍어낸 것이 지금의 "산학계몽"이다. 사무에 통달하고 산법이 밝았던 김시진은 현종때 경기 좌균전사의 벼슬을 지내고 경상감사까지 오른 당대의 수학자였다.

  • In this article, we introduce a generous but eccentric genius in mathematics, Paul Erdos. He invented probabilistic methods, pioneered in their applications to discrete mathematics, and estabilshed new theories, which are regarded as the greatest among his contributions to mathematical world. Here we introduce the probabilistic methods and random graph theory developed by Erdos and look at his life in glance with great respect for him.

  • There are lots of disabled mathematicians who overcame their disabilities and made great achievement to the world of mathematics. In this article, we introduce disabled mathematicians who overcome their disabilities and contributes to the development of mathematics: Nicholas Saunderson, Leonhard Euler, Lewis Carroll, Solomon Lefschetz, Louis Antoine, Gaston Maurice Julia, Lev Semenovich Pontryagin, Abraham Nemeth, John Nash, Bernard Morin, Anatoli G. Vitushkin, Lawrence W. Baggett, Norberto Salinas, Theodore John Kaczynski, Richard E. Borcherds, Dimitri Kanevsky, Hwang Yun-seong, Emmanuel Giroux, Kim In-kang, Zachary J. Battles, and Pratish Datta. As well, we classify mathematics education environments and the role education played in helping these mathematicians overcome their disabilities and other obstacles. Then, we discuss educational environmental changes in the 21st century for special mathematics education.

The history of Mathematics Genealogy Project and its meaning in Korea (수학자 족보 프로젝트의 과거와 현재 그리고 한국)

  • In this paper, we introduce the history and the present status of the Mathematics Genealogy Project (MGP). The cases of David Hilbert and the first author were used to show how it works. As an example, we explain how to gain useful information such as the granting year of mathematics Ph. D degree holders, the title of dissertation, advisors and descendants from the MGP website. Through a survey of three different groups in MGP on 20~30 significant Korean mathematicians, we found that Korean records in the academic genealogy project are missing or poorly presented in the database of the MGP website. In conclusion, we found a way to improve the situation and provide instructions to submit our information to MGP. We expect our effort can help Korean mathematics and mathematicians to become better exposed to the world. It will help others to understand both the modern history and the future prospect of Korean mathematics.

  • 아주대과학영재교육원에서 실시되고 있는 수학영재교육에서의 사사에 대한 기본적 아이디어와 과기부 과제 창의적 사사에 대한 생각을 정리하여 본다. 대학교에서 수학영재교육을 실시하는 큰 이유는 수학적 창조자인 수학자에게서 수학논문을 쓰는 법과 수학자로서 필요한 인성을 익히는 일이라고 생각한다.
