The purpose of this study is investigating the various properties related with mathematical processes in the mathematical essay lessons, analyzing the positive changes of students, and proposing an example that the mathematical essay lessons can be a model for changing traditional mathematical lessons. To carry out the research, mathematical essay questions were developed based upon the high school mathematics curriculum in probability and statistics domain. Eight 12th graders were participated for the research. Variety of properties related mathematical problem solving, reasoning, and communication in the lessons were appeared. The research conclude that mathematical essays are helpful not only appearance of general properties related mathematics process, but also appearance of properties that would be low chance of developed.
The goal of this study is to investigate reform directions of mathematics activity book which was introduced according to 2007 revised curriculum through literature analysis of introducing process. Futhermore, this study is to suggest the meaningful developing direction of new activity book according to the mathematics curriculum which is being developed now. To do this, first, the background of introducing activity book, developing direction, construction systems and the way to use it was analyzed. Second, teachers' response to the activity book on the basis of literature analysis was researched. Third, measures to improve activity book were investigated. In conclusion, reform direction of mathematics activity book was proposed in terms of developing research, goal, way to go, construction systems and questions arrangement.
The researchers developed the teaching-learning materials for 9th grade mathematically gifted students in terms of the hypothesis that the students would have opportunity for problem solving and develop various mathematical thinking through the mathematical modeling lessons. The researchers analyzed what mathematical thinking abilities were shown on each stage of modeling process through the application of the materials. Organization of information ability appears in the real-world exploratory stage. Intuition insight ability, spatialization/visualization ability, mathematical reasoning ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the pre-mathematical model development stage. Mathematical abstraction ability, spatialization/visualization ability, mathematical reasoning ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the mathematical model development stage. Generalization and application ability and reflective thinking ability appears in the model application stage. The developed modeling assignments have provided the opportunities for mathematically-gifted students' mathematical thinking ability to develop and expand.
The newly revised mathematics curriculum in 2009 mentioned the mathematics specified classroom. All schools in the secondary school will implement Mathmatics Subject Class System by 2014. Expecing to extend the mathematics specified classroom to the elementary school, this study explores the direction how to configurate and use it. On the ground of previous research on mathematics laboratory and mathematics subject class system, this study makes questionnaire and survey recognition and opinions about mathematics room in the elementary school with elementary school teachers. Based on the result of analysis of questionnaire, this study suggests math cultural experience room, room for mathematical recreation, mathematics specified classroom as the main functions of elementary mathematics room, and utilization of mathematics room to perform such functions. This study provides suggestions about elementary mathematics room differentiated from mathematics subject class system in the secondary school.

2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics emphasizes the mathematical processes which consist of mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communication. This study focused on applying these processes to an elementary school class for mathematics. Even though they say that it is desirable that the mathematical processes are realized in every mathematics class, any vague intention for their application without specific plans is apt to be apart from meaningful practice. Therefore this study proposed a lesson plan about the characteristics and the comparison of bar graphs and line graphs for 4th grade students based on the mathematical processes. And we applied it to 27 subjects. By observing and analyzing their activities and communications, we discussed about the guidelines of applying the mathematical processes to elementary school classes for mathematics.
It is a very important objective of mathematical education to lead students to apply mathematics to the problem situations and to solve the problems. Assuming that mathematical modeling is appropriate for such mathematical education objectives, we must emphasize mathematical modeling learning. In this research, we focused what mathematical concepts are learned and what reasoning are applied and used through mathematical modeling. In the process of mathematical modeling, the students used several types of reasoning; deduction, induction and abduction. Although we cannot generalize a fact by a single case study, deduction has been used to confirm whether their model is correct to the real situation and to find solutions by leading mathematical conclusion and induction to experimentally verify whether their model is correct. And abduction has been used to abstract a mathematical model from a real model, to provide interpretation to existing a practical ground for mathematical results, and elicit new mathematical model by modifying a present model.
Debates of calculators in mathematics lessons sometimes have happened in both countries that students rarely use calculators in math lessons including Republic of Korea and countries that students usually use calculators in math lessons. Korea has tried to activate usage of calculators in math lessons as the revision of national math curriculums and the development the strategies to support schools and math teachers. On the other hand, Singapore has the different educational strategies to use calculators in math lessons, but students have higher math achievements in TIMSS and interests in math lessons than Korea. This study intended to study the difference between Korea and Singapore on the usage of calculators in math lessons. To accomplish this, the study compared math curriculums of two countries on the usage of calculators and analysed TIMSS 2015 related with the survey items about calculators in math lessons. This study results in some suggestions that we should do in oder to use calculators in math lessons effectively.
Mathematics anxiety is a term for emotional and physical resistance to mathematics. Understanding students' mathematics anxiety is important not only in terms of improving mathematics academic achievement, but also in nurturing mathematics manpower necessary for the future society. In particular, mathematics anxiety is most likely to occur in elementary school, and it has a negative effect on subsequent learning. Therefore, it is important to understand the aspects of students' mathematics anxiety in elementary school. In this study, I presented the patterns of changes in students' mathematics anxiety over time and statistically verified them. As a result of a follow-up survey of 249 elementary school students' mathematics anxiety for 3 years from 4th to 6th grade, it was found that, rather than having a special pattern related to the formation of math anxiety, it may increase and decrease and vary depending on individual confirmed. Later, in this study, five patterns of Mathematics anxiety patterns were identified through statistical analysis. In addition, I confirmed that the students' interest about teachers' mathematics lessons was consistently influencing the change in mathematics anxiety. The results of this study will increase students' understanding of the formation of mathematics anxiety and can be used as basic data for the development of teaching and learning materials related to mathematics anxiety in the future and subsequent research.
Mathematical modeling can be described as a series of processes in which real-world problem situations are understood, interpreted using mathematical methods, and solved based on mathematical models. The effectiveness of mathematics instruction using mathematical modeling has been demonstrated through prior research. This study aims to explore insights for mathematical modeling instruction by analyzing the metacognitive characteristics shown in the mathematical modeling cycle, according to the mathematical thinking styles of elementary math gifted students. To achieve this, a mathematical thinking style assessment was conducted with 39 elementary math gifted students from University-affiliated Science Gifted Education Center, and based on the assessment results, they were classified into visual, analytical, and mixed groups. The metacognition manifested during the process of mathematical modeling for each group was analyzed. The analysis results revealed that metacognitive elements varied depending on the phases of modeling cycle and their mathematical thinking styles. Based on these findings, didactical implications for mathematical modeling instruction were derived.
Equity in mathematics education focuses on the relationship between social inequality caused by factors including culture and race. Equity in mathematics education has recently been recognized as one of the important issues of mathematics education and may provide grounds for setting the new direction of mathematics education for the future society. However, research on mathematics education equity in South Korea is still insufficient. The purpose of the paper is to provide implications for mathematics education research by reviewing the the literature regarding mathematics education equity. Focusing on 195 previous studies, I analyzed the significance of discussions on mathematics education equity in mathematics education, the concept of mathematics education equity, and research questions. In addition, I divided the previous studies into five categories based on their research questions: mathematics teachers, mathematics curriculum, mathematics classrooms, mathematics assessment, and socio-cultural environments surrounding mathematics classrooms. The analysis of the study are expected to provide implications in terms of new research questions and methods to domestic mathematics education researchers.
