  • It is known that Korean students performs very well in mathematics but show poor attitude toward mathematics. However, attitude itself is an important goal of education and it also promotes students learning. Therefore, it is important and urgent for us to find a way to improve students' attitude toward mathematics. In this article, we tried to examine characteristics of Korean students' attitude toward mathematics and identify student and school level factors affecting it. For this purpose, we analysed National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) data in 2007 when NAEA was conducted especially focused on mathematics. Main findings of this research are as follows. First, we found that attitude toward mathematics got lower as students advanced to higher grades. And among 3 sub-domains of attitude toward mathematics, interest and self-confidence were lower than perception of value of mathematics. Secondly, attitude toward mathematics was mainly affected by student background variables such as gender, achievement, participation in private tutoring, father's education level. And while school factors contributed relatively little to students' attitude toward mathematics, teacher's perception on value of school education was positively related with students' attitude in high schools and emphasis on assessment was negatively related with students' attitude in elementary schools.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze concretely and minutely a primary factor of deciding attitude of learning mathematics of elementary school students, grope a solution for negative attitude of learning mathematics with researching a difference between major factors by achievement in mathematics, and examine a suggestion in forming positive attitude of learning mathematics. The results of this study is as follows. First, elementary school students decided whether they liked or disliked mathematics, depending on not only characteristics of mathematics, but also teacher's teaching mathematics with interest and fun, or teacher's teaching tediously and difficultly. Second, negative attitude toward mathematics exam of elementary school students was influenced by parents' meddling for exam and negative attitude toward result of exam more than uneasiness by exam itself. Third, as private education for elementary school students becomes more popular, the learning mathematics out of school can be an important factor to decide attitude of learning mathematics of students on several sides such as teacher, teaching method, method of presenting task, and so on as much as mathematics class in school, and characteristics of mathematics. Fourth, students demanded silent and concentrative atmosphere in studying to have positive attitude of learning mathematics. Fifth, as the result of examining major factors that form attitude of teaming mathematics of groups by achievement in mathematics, there was considerable difference in each group. Students in a group of ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ disliked parents' meddling and rebuke, but it didn't change greatly their attitude toward mathematics exam. However a group of ‘middle’ showed the greatest uneasiness toward an exam, and they reacted sensitively to parent's rebuke, scolding, learning environment, and so on.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships among attitude towards mathematics, mathematics activity, and mathematics achievement, and compare the relationship between the United States and Korea using the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) database. Since Korea is one of the countries where performance was among the highest and the United States is one of countries where performance was among the middle in mathematics, and many previous researchers reported that attitude towards mathematics and class activities are factors that affect mathematics achievement. the comparison study between two countries would be very important to analyze how factors are affected by country difference. The major research questions are as follows: (1) What constitutes attitude towards mathematics and mathematics activities in the TIMSS database\ulcorner (2) How do these two variables, attitude towards mathematics and mathematics activities, affect mathematics achievement differently between the United States and Korea\ulcorner The result indicates that the relationship between the attitude towards mathematics and the mathematics achievement is stronger for Korea than for the United States; however no country difference is found between the mathematics activities and mathematics achievement. According to this study high mathematics achievement is expected when students' attitude towards mathematics is positively high.

  • In order to suggest the basic resources of mathematics education to the specialized high school, we investigate the attitude of students about mathematics education. Questionnaires survey was carried on 654 students and we use the statistical analysis such as chi-square test, gamma, generalized linear model, Anova, regression. Several result can be derived from the questionnaire analysis. There are differences between the general and specialized high school students in the interest, pre-learning ability etc. The specialized school students think the usefulness of mathematics more importantly, while the general school students think more closely related to their course.

  • Since Covid-19, many educational institutions no longer view online learning as an additional material, but use it as their main learning tool. In this study, we tried to summarize the definition of smart learning and examined how smart learning math classes affect academic achievement, mathematical interest, and attitudes. We manipulate groups that conducted smart learning and groups that conducted face-to-face learning, and compare academic performance, mathematical interest, and attitudes after six weeks of learning. As a result, we found that the smart learning group had a large values in all three factors compared to the face-to-face learning group. We also found moderating effect. Students with lower grades largely improved their academic achievement scores as the difference in attitude changes through smart learning compared to those with higher grades.

  • Various factors affecting teachers' self-confidence exist in math class using technology such as graphic calculators. For example, internal factors such as teachers' attitude and external factors such as school administrators or colleague's support can be considered. Pedagogical Technology Knowledge(PTK) is the very important factor which determines teacher's self-confidence in educational technology, and the development of PTK is composed of teacher's perception on the technology and its application and instrumentation. This study investigated 19 pre-service and current middle and high school teachers in the respect of their change of self-confidence, attitude, expertise on pedagogical technology, and quality of math class. These are anlayzed with the concept of instrumentation and instrumentalization through various experiences like graphic calculator, GPS and AutoGraph. The result indicated that constraints or obstacles did not affect much if teachers' attitude and self-confidence were strong. Particularly teachers' firm will to learn about technology and their confidence on its value are the critical factors in using technology for mathematics class.

  • Mathematics was the main domain of PISA 2012, and both paper-based and computer-based assessment of mathematics (CBAM) were conducted. PISA 2012 was the first large-scale computer-based mathematics assessment in Korea, and it is meaningful in that it evaluated students' mathematical literacy in problem situations using dynamic geometry, graph, and spreadsheet. Although Korea ranked third in CBAM, the use of ICT in mathematics lessons appeared to be low. On the other hand, this study focused on Singapore, which ranked first in CBAM. The Singapore Ministry of Education developed online programs such as AlgeTools and AlgeDisc, and implemented the programs in classes by specifying them in mathematics curriculum and textbooks. Thus, this study investigated influential factors on computer-based assessment of mathematics by comparing the results of Korea and Singapore, and aimed to provide meaningful evidence on the direction of Korea's ICT-based mathematics education. The results showed that ICT use at home for school related tasks, attitudes towards computers as a tool for school learning, and openness and perseverance of problem solving were positively associated with computer-based mathematics performance, whereas the use of ICT in mathematics class by teacher demonstration was negatively related. Efforts are needed to improve computer use and enhance teaching techniques related to ICT use in Korean math classes. Future research is recommended to examine how effectively teachers use ICT in mathematics class in Singapore.

  • The study in this paper, which is part of a bigger study investigating non-cognitive characteristics of Korean students at the 4-12 grade levels, aims to identify the influential characteristics that explain students' decision to give up on mathematics learning. We consider seven non-cognitive student characteristics: value, interest, attitudes, external motivation, internal motivation, learning conation and efficacy. Data were collected from 21,485 Korean students, and were analyzed with a logistic regression method using SPSS. The findings show that efficacy was the most significant indicator of students' decision to give up on mathematics learning in all three grade level bands: elementary (4th-6th), middle (7th-9th) and high (10th-12th). In particular, the causal model analysis shows that students who highly value mathematics tend to have stronger internal and external motivation, which bring about stronger interest and learning conation, which in turn lead to positive attitudes and strong efficacy regarding the learning of mathematics. It was further found that while external motivation was a significant indicator of upper grade level students' decision to give up on mathematics learning, it was only a moderate indicator for lower grade level students. The findings of this study provide useful information about which non-cognitive areas need to be focused on, in what grade levels, to help students stay on track and not fall behind in learning mathematics.
