  • This research aims to conduct the teaching experiment based on the constructivism to elementary preservice teachers and report on how they construct and develop the mathematical knowledge on ratio concept. Furthermore, this research aims to examine the significances and difficulties of "constructivist teaching experiment" which are conceived by elementary preservice teachers. As the results of this research, I identified the possibilities and limits of mathematical knowledge construction by elementary preservice teachers in the "constructivist teaching experiment". And the elementary preservice teachers pointed out the significances of "constructivist teaching experiment" such as the experience of prior thinking on the concept to be learned, the deep understanding on the concept, the active participation to the lesson, and the experience of learning process of elementary students. Also they pointed out the difficulties of "constructivist teaching experiment" such as the consumption of much time to carry out the constructivist teaching, the absence of direct feedbacks by teacher, and the adaption on the constructivist lesson.

  • Even the teachers who agree with the necessity of effective mathematical discussions find it difficult to orchestrate such discussions in the actual lessons. This study focused on analyzing the difficulties 15 elementary school teachers faced in applying "the five practices for orchestrating productive mathematics discussions" to their lessons. Specifically, this study analyzed the process of planning, implementing, and reflecting on the lessons to which three or four teachers as a teacher community applied the five practices. The results of this study showed that the teachers experienced difficulties in selecting and presenting tasks tailored to the student levels and class environment, monitoring all students' solutions, and identifying the core mathematical ideas in student solutions. In addition, this study revealed practical and specific difficulties that had not been described in the previous studies, such as writing a lesson plan for effective use, simultaneously performing multiple teacher roles, and visually sharing student presentations. This study is expected to provide practical tips for elementary school teachers who are eager to promote effective mathematical discussions and to provoke professional discourse for teacher educators through specific examples.

  • SENKs (Students who Emigrated from North Korea to South Korea) are exposed to the general problem of Su-Po-Ja(mathematics give-uppers) as well as their own difficulty in learning mathematics. In this study, we conducted the FGI (focus group interview) in order to examine the recognition on mathematics teaching and learning in South Korea with 6 SENKs and 3 teachers who teach the SENKs. As a result, it was found that SENKs' had difficulties in understanding math because of the differences in math terminology used in South and that in North Korea, the unfamiliar problem situation used in math lesson, and the shortage of time for solving math problem. And the teachers reported that they had difficulties in teaching great deal of basic math, SENKs' weak will to learn math, and SENKs' lack of understanding about problem situation because of the inexperience about culture and society in South Korea.

  • The 7th curriculum sets a basic direction based on learner centered teaching. To this end, the curriculum puts a focus on activity centered classes using teaching tools. In reality, however, elementary school teachers find using the teaching tools in their classes difficult, although there are various studies going on to improve the practical use of the teaching tools in the classroom. In this paper, we present an effective approach to utilize those prior studies on using the teaching tools in classes for 4th, 5th and 6th graders.

  • This study was to investigate the practice of the teachers who changed their teaching subject to Mathematics from other subjects. Teacher, A who had traditional belief and Teacher, B, non-traditional belief were chosen for the study through the questionnaire in Sep. 2014. The result indicated that Teacher, A in traditional belief showed teacher-centered teaching but Teacher, B in nontraditional belief showed inconsistent way of teaching in comparison to the original perspective. The later said she could not teach students as she wanted to teach because of the lack of knowledge of teaching as a math teacher. The difficulties Teacher, A encountered were: to handle too many works beyond teaching and to teach too many contents to cover without having enough time to prepare. Teacher, B didn't know how to teach students math in a constructivism way. They asked to offer them more in-service training program to develop their expertise for teaching mathematics.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand Preservice elementary teachers' knowledge about multiplication of fractions by focusing on their computation abilities, understanding of meanings, generating appropriate problem contexts and representations. A total of 115 preservice elementary teachers participated in the present study. The results of this study indicated that most of preservice elementary teachers have little difficulty in computing multiplication of fractions for right answers, but they have big difficulty in understanding meanings and generating appropriate problem contexts for multiplication of fractions when the multiplier is not an integer, called 'multiplier effect.' Likewise, the rate of appropriate representations surprisingly decreased for multiplication of fractions when the multiplier is not an integer. The findings also point out that an ability to make problem contexts is highly correlated with representations and meanings. This study implies that teacher education programs need to improve preservice elementary teachers' profound understanding of elementary mathematics in order to fundamentally improve the quality of teaching practices in classrooms.

  • This study included eleven elementary pre-service teachers who participated in the first and second teaching practices held by J Education College in 2015. After the pre-service teachers were encouraged to self-reflect on their mathematics teaching using a reflective survey sheet of mathematics teaching expertise, their uses of mathematics teaching expertise were analyzed according to the times of their mathematics practice instructions. The results are as follows: First, as the frequency of their mathematics teaching increased, the pre-service teachers' uses of mathematics teaching expertise increased, especially greatly with seven of them. However, the number of subcategories where the teachers' uses of mathematics teaching expertise increased was different from at least two to seven depending on the teachers. Second, the pre-service teachers who performed mathematics teaching practices four times used more of mathematics teaching expertise than those who did two times or three times. Third, some pre-service teachers who taught two or three times never reached 90% of the total score of any subcategory, even in the subcategory where they showed increase in their uses of mathematics teaching expertise. Fourth, the subcategory of 'reflection before class - teaching perspective - understanding of mathematics subject knowledge' was analyzed as the most difficult one for the study participants, and the reason is, they think, that there are not enough materials on the historical back grounds of mathematical concepts.

  • This study is a qualitative study on the case of teaching mathematics between parents and children. 12 lesson units were applied to the 5th grade elementary school child for the first semester, 2019. The purpose of this study was to identify conceptual understanding in the area, the types of problems that child felt difficult during the learning and parents' advantages and difficulties in this setting. For this study, video recording and voice recording were collected for each lesson class. The concept of the area was recognized correctly, the awareness of reconstruction became clear, and the concept of partitioning, unit iteration and structuring an array was more clearly rebuilt. He showed difficulty in conversion between units of the area, in displaying height of the shape whose height is displayed outside and drawing type of figure with same area after the value of the area was offered. In the learning situation of parents and children, parents who are researchers have the advantage of being able to customize up to their children and being free from time and cost constraints. There were difficulties in controlling negative emotion toward the child, determining the level of the children, distribution the class time and deciding the degree of intervention. Furthermore, research on parenting and child-to-parent teaching in mathematics is recommended.
