  • In this study, we investigate the science and mathematics articles in Hansungsunbo and Hansungjubo which are the first modernistic newspapers in Korea. Hansungsunbo was published from October 31, 1883 to December 4, 1884 and Hansungjubo was issued from January 25, 1886 to July, 1888. While these papers were published, Korea had concluded a treaty with America(1882), England(1883), Germany(1883), Russia, and France(1884). Therefore, Korea had a lot of problems with commercial relations, the civilization and enlightenment of the Korean society. In this situation, some leaders who had the enlightenment thought published these two papers in order to inform the Korean people of the worldwide news on the politics, economy, history, science and technology, and so on. In this paper, we bring up the title and the contents on the science articles and the mathematics test problems of 'Dongmoonguan' and 'Chunjinmoobi School'.

  • In early 21st century, universities in Korea has been asked the new roles according to the changes of educational and social environment. With Korea's NURI and Brain Korea 21 project support, some chosen research oriented universities now should produce "teacher of teachers". We look 100 years back America's mathematics and see many resemblances between the status of US mathematics at that time and the current status of Korean mathematics, and find some answer for that. E. H. Moore had produced many good research mathematicians through his laboratory teaching techniques. R. L. Moore was his third PhD students. He developed his Texas/Moore method. In this article, we analyze what R. L. Moore had done through his American School of Topology and Moore method. We consider the meaning that early University of Texas case gives us in PBL(Problem Based Learning) process.

  • In this study, we investigated a good way for teacher professional development. Based on this way, we designed teacher training program. We carried out teacher training program for 50 secondary school mathematics teachers in July 2014. In this teacher training courses, teachers conducted recording mathematics teaching-learning processes by dialogue between teacher and student according to Socratic method. We also shared the practices of teacher educators, teachers and colleagues. In this teacher training, we tried to cultivate teachers' abilities needed to a good mathematics instruction. And we aimed to equip the attitude that guided reflection on their mathematics class. Through the teacher training, teachers recognized the need to study on the thinking of students and take into account students' expected reaction on the part of learners. Also they developed an attitude as reflective practitioners and recognized the need of teacher learning communities for their professional development.

  • Zoltan, P. Dienes is a famous researcher and practitioner who has tried to teach mathematical structures to children for about 50 years. Even though his ideas of teaching mathematics and materials including MAB have been well known in Korea, they are only a part of his achievement he has developed for his whole life. So this article is designed for taking an overview of his whole life and achievement and getting some implications for today's mathematics education. In this article, his life story could be divided by five periods in terms of a scholastic career and his research achievement could be reorganized with respect to five theses: psychology of learning mathematics, mathematical curriculum, teacher education, games and material for mathematical learning. As a result, it is found that there is a deep connection between his personal life and his scholastic career.

  • This study begins from posing a problem, 'formal introduction of mathematical induction in school mathematics'. Most students may learn the mathematical induction at the level of instrumental understanding without meaningful understanding about its meaning and structure. To improve this didactical situation, we research on the historical progress of mathematical induction from implicit use in greek mathematics to formalization by Pascal and Fermat. And we identify various types of thinking included in the developmental process: recursion, regression, analytic thinking, synthetic thinking. In special, we focused on the role of regression in mathematical induction, and then from that role we induce the implications for teaching mathematical induction in school mathematics.

  • In this study, the kindergarten teachers and elementary school teachers were surveyed to see the level relevance of the kindergarten and primary school curriculums. As a result, first, the kindergarten curriculum was generally appeared appropriate to the level of kindergarten students. However, in practice, a significant amount of the first grade curriculum were taught in the kindergarten. Second, the variation of mathematical abilities among the begining students was very large, and this variation also affected the students' achievements. Third, both kindergarten teachers and elementary school teachers wished for adjustments of the level of mathematics curriculum.

  • Mathematics becomes more indispensible course today, while it seems approaching to the middle school students as a boring and hard one. So, we need to take more motivational teaching devices as well as mere emphases on its importance in order to keep the students up to tile curriculum and improve the education efficiency. Then, history of mathematics call lie one major source of the motivation, since, by telling the tales on the specific unit subject, teachers can awake the students'interest naturally. Today, most of the mathematics textbooks for the middle school students have some historical tales about each unit subject in their respective unit introduction. However, many tales don't seem quite helpful or motivating to understand unit subjects, for they are either abstract or fragmental. In that sense, this paper has three sample guidelines for teaching, which ate meant to introduce historical tales to motivate the students before teachers may get into tile main unit subject. Those suggested in this paper may work as the motivational teaching devices which would make the students mote interested, more positive, and consequently more successful in mathematics.

  • TIMSS 2003 is the third and most recently round of IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. In this study, I considered the changes of the mathematics cognitive domain in TIMSS and got some facts for developing assessment framework. And I analyzed 7 countries' achievement in the view of our country Korea, i.e. Singapore, Hongkong, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Netherlands, and Unites States. With the reliable and valid achievement scales for cognitive domains given by ISC, students' achievement scales were analyzed according to country, percentile, and sex in each cognitive domain.

  • In this paper, we shall try to give a comparative study of mathematics developments in ancient Greece and ancient Oriental mathematics. We have found that the Oriental Mathematics. is quantitative, computational and algorithmetic, but the ancient Greece is axiomatic and deductive mathematics in character. The two region mathematics should be unified to give impetus to further development of mathematics in future times.
