Heat and mass transfer characteristics of a surfactant-added LiBr-$H_2O$ solution flowing over a single horizontal tube were examined experimentally. The parameters considered were surfactant (2-ethyl-1-hexanol) concentration, solution temperature at the top of the tube and absorber pressure. Even with an amount of the surfactant below the solubility limit, heat and mass transfer performances were enhanced tremendously. The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers increased by about 70% and 340%, respectively, when 10 ppm of the surfactant was added. However, an excess amount of the surfactant in the solution did not bring a further enhancement. The absorption performance deteriorated when the non-condensable gases were extracted from the system (by a vacuum pump) since the vaporized surfactant was also extracted during the process. Therefore, it is desirable to add a sufficient amount of the surfactant (more than 10 ppm) to maintain high performance of absorption.
The investigation of the fuel cladding temperature behavior and heat transfer mechanism during the reflooding phase of a LOCA plays an important role in performance evaluation of ECCS and safety analysis of water reactors. Reflooding experiments were performed with horizontal and vertical flow channels to investigate the effect of coolant flow channel orientation on rewetting process. Emphasis was mainly placed on the CANDU reactor which has horizontal pressure tubes in core, and the results were compared with those of vertical channel. Also to investigate the rewetting process visually, the experiments by using a rod in annulus and a quartz tube heated outside were performed. It can be concluded that the rewetting velocity in horizontal flow channel is clearly affected by flow stratification, however, the average rewetting velocity is similar to those in vertical flow channel for same conditions.

The cooling heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ (R-744) in a horizontal and helically coiled tube was investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater, evaporator and gas cooler (test section). The test section consists of a horizontal stainless steel tube and hellically coiled copper tube of 4.57 and 7.75 mm. The experiments were conducted at saturation temperature of 100 to $20^{\circ}C$, and mass flux of 200 to $500kg/m^2s$. The test results showed the variation of the heat transfer coefficient tended to decrease as cooling pressure of $CO_2$ increased. The heat transfer coefficient with respect to mass flux increased as mass flux increased. The experimental results were also compared with the existing correlations for the supercritical heat transfer coefficient, which generally underpredicted the measured data. However, the experimental data showed a relatively good agreement with the correlations of Pitla et al. except for the pseudo critical temperature.

An experimental study was performed to examine the heat and mass transfer characteristics of $LiBr-H_2O$ solution flowing over a single horizontal tube with the water vapor absorption. Effects of the flow rate and the temperature of the solution at the top of the tube, the absorber pressure and the drainage pattern were considered. The absorption rate depends highly on the absorber pressure at the low flow rate condition while on the solution inlet temperature at the high flow rate condition. Also, when the flow rate is low, the absorption performance with the sheet flow drainage appeared to be higher than that with the dripping/jet drainage. However, at the high flow rate condition, the case became reversed. The liquid film became wavy with the higher absorption rate. The waves were more probable to form with the lower flow rate and temperature of the solution, and with the higher absorber pressure.

Extensive researches have been carried out for enhancing the safety of nuclear power plants and, especially, the development of passive cooling systems, such as passive containment cooling system (PCCS) and passive residual heat removal system, is increasingly important, where condensation is a crucial heat transfer mechanism. Recently, Ahn & Yun et al. developed a horizontal in-tube condensation heat transfer model as one of the activities for the PCCS development. In this work, we implemented the Ahn & Yun 's condensation heat transfer model into the MARS code and assessed it using the PASCAL experimental data. Based on the results of the assessment, we identified the limitations of the Ahn & Yun 's model and suggested a modified Ahn & Yun 's model, and assessed the model using various experimental data.
In this study improvement of transient analysis model, KOTRAC, for the passive reactor has been performed. In the KOTRAC, mixture drift flux model is adopted to simulate thermal hydraulic behavior, which can simulate ECCS injection in the passive plant. However, there is a difficulty to handle complete phase separation phenomena due to the near-zero density, which may occur in the pressurizer surge line or horizontal flow paths. In this study, a couple of model changes to over-come Courant limit feilure has been examined. One of key features is to substitute flow distribution parameters with Ishii's correlation. Corrected results are nil compared to those of RELAP/MOD3 analysis.
In this study, we quantitatively compare the cooling effects of single span plastic greenhouses by opening or shutting of toot and side vents, and operation of fan or sprinkler. With those variables, we simultaneously made experiments at 4 greenhouses under equivalent conditions. By the experiments, the shutting of roof and side vents caused the high temperature difference of indoor and outdoor which the crops cannot be cultivated. However, the opening of the windows effectively reduced the indoor temperature and showed uniform temperature distribution in the greenhouses. The sprinkler abruptly reduced the indoor temperature, and showed excellent cooling effects. Finally, this paper provides the fundamental data for environmental control in greenhouses.
Heat transfer characteristics for heat retrieving processes in a paraffin-filled horizontal circular cylinder was studied. Theoretical and experimental analyses were carried out. In the theoretical analysis, solid and liquid phases were treated separately. Namely, convection for liquid and conduction for solid phase were investigated respectively. The retrieved heat was calculated from the experimentally determined solidified mass. Furthermore, the effects of initial temperature of the liquid and cooling temperature on the heat discharge rate were also studied. In the heat retrieving process, the governing factor for the solidifying rate is the cooling temperature, because most of the liquid sensible heat is rapidly discharged in the initial stage of solidification. Hence heat transfer mechanism during heat retrieving process can be safely considered as conduction. In the cut of frozen paraffin, there showed an empty space in the upper region. It is caused by the temperature drop in the liquid paraffin. While volume shrinkage caused by phase transition was indiscernible. Irrespective of cooling temperature and initial liquid temperature, solidified mass was well-correlated with the product of Fourier number and Stefan number in the solid phase.
In this study, the detailed fuel assembly stress analysis model to evaluate the structural integrity for seismic and blowdown accidents is developed. For this purpose, as the first step, the program MAIN which identifies the worst bending mode shaped fuel assembly(FA) in core model is made. And the finite element model for stress calculation of FA components is developed. In the model the fuel rods (FRs) and the guide thimbles are modelled by 3-dimensional beam elements, and the spacer grid spring is modelled by a linear and relational spring. The constraints come from the results of the program MAIN. The stress analysis of the 16$\times$16 type FA under arbitary seismic load is performed using the developed program and modelling technique as an example. The developed stress model is helpful for the stress calculation of FA components for seismic and blowdown loads to evaluate the structural integrity of FA.
