  • In this paper, we consider interval number-valued random variables and fuzzy number-valued random variables and discuss Choquet integrals of them. Using these properties, we define the Choquet expected value of fuzzy number-valued random variables which is a natural generalization of the Lebesgue expected value of fuzzy random variables. Furthermore, we discuss some application of them.

  • The influences of the coupler consisting of stiffness and mass between neighboring two spans on mode localization are studied theoretically, and the results are confirmed by numerical examples. The mass of the coupler makes a structure sensitive to mode localization especially in higher modes while the stiffness does in all modes. A new type of delocalization phenomenon is observed for the first time in some modes for which mode localization does not occur or is very weak although structural disturbances are severe. A spring-mass system consisting of two substructures and a coupler connecting them is considered in the part of analytical study. As example structures for numerical analysis. simply supported continuous two-span beams with a coupler having a rotational stiffness and a mass moment of inertia on the mid support are considered.

  • In the first part of this study, the moving least squares finite difference method for solving solid mechanics problems was formulated. This second part verified the accuracy, robustness and effectiveness of the developed method through several numerical examples. It was shown that the method gives excellent convergence rate for elasticity problem. The solution process of elastic crack problems showed the easiness in discontinuity modeling and demonstrates the accuracy and efficiency in finding singular stress solution based on adaptive node distribution. The applicability to the engineering problem with abrupt change in displacement and stresses gradient fields is verified through a localization band problem. The developed method is expected to be extended to the various special engineering problems.

  • This paper comprises two specific objectives. The first is to examine the applicability of Ordinary Kriging interpolation(OK) to finite element method that is based on variogram modeling in conjunction with different allowable limits of separation distance. The second is to investigate the accuracy according to theoretical variograms such as polynomial, Gauss, and spherical models. For this purpose, the weighted least square method is applied to obtain the estimated new stress field from the stress data at the Gauss points. The weight factor is determined by experimental and theoretical variograms for interpolation of stress data apart from the conventional interpolation methods that use an equal weight factor. The validity of the proposed approach has been tested by analyzing two numerical examples. It is noted that the numerical results by Gauss model using 25% allowable limit of separation distance show an excellent agreement with theoretical solutions in literature.

  • Estimating moving vehicle loads is important in modeling design loads for bridge design and construction. The paper proposes a moving force identification algorithm using moment influence lines measured at multi-axes. Density estimation function was applied to estimate more than two wheel loads when estimated load values fluctuated severely. The algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on a simple-span plate-girder bridge. Influences of measurement noise and error in velocity on the identification results were investigated in the simulation study. Also, laboratory experiments were carried out to examine the algorithm. The load identification capability was dependent on the type and speed of moving loads, but the developed algorithm could identify loads within 10% error in maximum.

  • The paper presents an algorithm of selecting optimal locations for measuring displacements(OLD) to adjust cable tension forces during the construction of cable-stayed bridges. The rank for optimal locations can be determined from the effective independence distribution vectors(EIDV) that are computed from the Fisher Information Matrices(FIM) formulated with the displacement sensitivities. To examine the efficiency and reliability of the proposed algorithm for determining OLD, a simulation study on a cable-stayed bridge has been carried out. The results using FIM formulated with displacements are compared with those using FIM with displacement sensitivities through the simulation study. The effects of measurement noise and error in cable length on the adjustment of cable tension forces are evaluated statistically by applying the Monte Carlo scheme.

  • An algorithm is proposed for estimating dynamic displacements of a bridge by using FBG sensors and by superposing some measurable low modes. Modal displacements are obtained from the beam theory and the generalized coordinates are deduced from the strains measured by FBG sensors. By considering flexural and torsional modes occurred in bridges only as flexural modes of a simply supported beam by separating a bridge into multiple girders or parts, the proposed algorithm can be applied to various types of bridges. Guidelines are provided theoretically for determining the number of modes and the number of strain gages to be used. The proposed algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on various types of bridges, laboratory experiments on a model bridge, and field tests on a simple span PC Box girder bridge. Through the simulation study, the effects of the error in the vibration modes and measurement noise on estimating the dynamic displacements are analyzed.

  • 2D finite element model for analysis of transport of accidentally released pollutants in the flow was developed by SUPG method, and the mass balance of this model was checked though two example problems: line source and point source problem in the straight channel and unidirectional 2D flow field, respectively. All the test cases were simulated with both SUPG and conventional Galerkin method to compare the accuraccy of the numerical mass balance. Test results show that the model with SUPG can adequately conserve the released mass though simulation than the model using Galerkin method, so the developed model verified to be appropriate to solve this accidental mass release problem.

  • In this paper, nonlinear parallel structural analyses are introduced by using the parallel multifrontal solver and damage localization for 2D and 3D crack models is presented as the application of nonlinear parallel computation. The parallel algorithms related with nonliear reduce the amount of memory used is carried out because many variables should be utilized for this highly nonlinear damage analysis. Also, Riks' continuation method is parallelized to search the solution when strain softening occurs due to damage evolution. For damage localization problem, several computational models having up to around 1-million degree of freedoms are used. The parallel performance in this nonlinear parallel algorithm is shown through these examples and the local variation of damage at crack tip is compared among the models with different degree of freedoms.

  • Nonseismic designed RC frame have a possibility of shear failure because of deficiencies of reinforcing details. To model the shear failure in numerical analysis, shear strength degradation models which Include Moehle's and ATC 40 are compared and applied to push-over analysis. For numerical analysis, three storied building frame is selected and designed according to Korean Concrete Design Code(2003). As results, It is shown that Moehle's shear strength degradation model estimates the shear strength lower than NZSEE model and has less variation than ATC 40 model and all the shear strengths of models are greater than the nominal shear strength of ACI 318. Also, from the numerical analysis, it is pointed out that there may be great difference in lateral drift capacity if a different shear strength model is used. And the capacity can be severely underestimated if the restraining model of plastic rotation of ATC 40 is used, compared to the use of shear spring model for shear degradation.
