  • On plane strain condition, many researchers have investigated the earth pressure according to the shape of wall, and standardized method has been applied to the design of the retaining wall. But on cylindrical diaphragm wall, at-rest earth pressure has been generally used. Even though this method is on conservative side, it may lead to over-design. In this paper, the application of convergence confinement method to the calculation of the earth pressure acting on the cylindrical diaphragm wall of a shaft was suggested. In addition, a model test was carried out to investigate the distributions of earth pressure. Model test results show that the earth pressures of diaphragm wall are about 1.4 times larger than active earth pressure and about 0.8 times less than at-rest earth pressure.

  • It is important to pay careful attention to the backfill construction for the structural integrity of concrete box culvert. To increase the structural integrity of culvert good compaction by the dynamic compaction roller with big capacity is as effective as good backfill materials. However structural distress of the culvert could be occurred due to the excessive earth pressure by great dynamic compaction load. In this study, two box culverts were constructed with change compaction materials and construction methods. Two type of on-site soils such as subbase and subgrade materials were used as backfill materials. In most case, dynamic compaction rollers with 11 to 12 ton weights were used and vibration frequency were applied from 2000 to 2500 rpm for the great compaction energy. Backfill compactions with good quality soils were carried out to examine the effect of cushions on dynamic lateral soil pressure. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and rubber of tire were adapted as cushion materials and they are set on the culverts before backfill construction. This paper presents the main results on the characteristics of dynamic earth pressures. Test result indicates that the amounts of increased dynamic pressures are affected with backfill materials, depth of pressure cell, and compaction condition. The earth pressure during compaction can give harmful effect to box culvert because the value of dynamic earth pressure coefficient $(\DeltaK_{dyn}=\DeltaK\sigma_h\DeltaK\sigma_v)$ during compaction is greater than that of static condition. It was observed that cushion panels of EPS(t=10cm) and rubber(t=5cm) are effective to mitigate dynamic lateral pressure on the culverts.

  • In this research, a small-scaled laboratory test and FEM analysis have been carried out to evaluate the feasibility of field construction with couple of recycled materials, such as in-situ soil, water-treatment sludge, and crumb rubbers. A static loading, which simulates the real traffic load, was adopted in lab test. The test was carried out, according to simulated field construction stages, such as excavation, bedding materials and pipe installation, placing and curing of controlled low strength materials, and simulated traffic loading. Couple of measuring instruments were adopted. The maximum vertical and horizontal deformations were 0.83% and 1.09%, during placing the CLSM. The measured vertical and horizontal deformations with curing time were 0.603mm and 0.676mm, respectively. The reduction effect of vertical and lateral earth pressure was relatively big. Also, FEM analysis was carried out to get the deformation, earth pressure and strain of PVC with different Controlled Low Strength Materials(CLSM) materials.

  • Micropiles are widely used in construction field to enhance bearing capacity and reduce settlement of existing foundation. It has various benefits such as low construction expense, simple installation process, and small construction equipment. Recently, new microple equipped with the base expansion structure at the end has been developed to improve the foundation bearing capacity. The improvement of load capacity can be conceptually achieved by expanding the base expansion structure when a load is applied to the micropile. However, the expansion mechanism of the base expansion structure and the improvement of load capacity of the micropile were not yet experimentally validated. Therefore, in this study, a series of centrifuge model tests was performed to evaluate the effect of the base expansion structure on the improvement of load capacity. Two types of soil, sand and weathered rock, were prepared and the loading tests were performed using the real micropile with the base expansion structure. During the tests, the earth pressures surrounding the base expansion structure were monitored. As a result, when a load of 30 kN was applied to the micropile, the increase in the ratio of the horizontal to vertical pressure increment (∆σh/∆σ𝜈) ranged from 0.4 to 0.58 in sand and ∆σh/∆σ𝜈 = 0.19 in weathered rock, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the increase in the horizontal earth pressure adjacent to the base expansion structure will improve the bearing capacity of the micropile.

  • A series of centrifugal model test was conducted to investigate the distribution of vertical earth pressure on circular ductile underground corrugated steel plate waterway culvert with considering the compaction degree of the backfill in the high landfilled embankment section. The compaction degree of backfill was varied to 80, 85, 90, and 95% at the 53g-level gravity considering the similarity of the site. As a result of this test, the load reduction factor by the arching effect of the top of corrugated steel plate showing ductile behavior nearly agreed with the load reduction factor according to the compaction degree of backfill specified in the AISI(2002) design method. The vertical earth pressure measured at the top of the corrugated steel plate was linearly decreased as the compaction degree increased. The greater the compaction degree of backfill was, the greater the reduction of surface loading on the top of the corrugated steel plate by arching effect. The load decreased by arching effect on top of the corrugated steel plate was transferred to the side backfill of the corrugated steel plate(EP 1) and the outside of backfill(EP 3).

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests were fulfilled to investigate the characteristics of bearing capacity of paper ash as a filling material. The model tests were done varying the footing width and gravity level. The settlement and vertical soil pressure by loading were measured. The results from the tests were compared with the one from FLAC program using finite difference method and bearing capacity theory. After all, it was shown that the characteristics of load-settlement represented the local shear failure, which the settlement ratio s/B showed inflection point around 25~30%. As g-level and footing width were increasing, the load strength was increasing. The ultimate bearing capacity from the tests was very closed the results from Terzaghi's theory. As the distance from footing center was increasing, the vertical soil pressure was decreasing. If E/B is higher than 7, the stress by loading was almost increasing. The vertical displacement from loading was the largest one around under the footing and was almost occurred when the depth>4cm and E/B is higher than 5.0.

  • Many electric poles in the softground have been collapsed due to external load. In this study, 10 types of tests were performed with variation of location, numbers and depths of anchor blocks as well as depth of poles to find horizontal earth pressure through full scale pull-out tests. The horizontal earth pressure increased with embedded depth of electric pole, and earth pressure of lower passive zone decreased. The deeper of anchor block, earth pressure of passive zone becomes less. 4 anchor blocks decreased earth pressure at G.L.-0.9[m]. It is considered that 4 anchor blocks installed along 80[cm] vertically are main reason. Overall, when more anchor blocks are constructed, excavation area is large, and constructivity such as backfill is bad, therefore one anchor block would be preferred.

  • In the case of the existing method of underground pipe construction, the difficulty of the bedding compaction of pipe causes reducing the compaction efficiency and the stability of the underground facilities and conclusively damaging the structures. One of the methods to solve these problem is using the flowable fills as a backfill material. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis of the underground pipe was performed in order to evaluate the behavior of pipe according to backfill mixtures. To estimate the deformation characteristic of the underground pipe, the displacement of the main part of the pipe, ground settlement and vertical earth pressures were measured in different backfill mixtures and maintaining the other conditions constantly. As a result of numerical analysis, using the flowable fills as the backfill material is better than using sand in reducing the ground settlement, the pipe deformation and the vertical earth pressure aspect.

  • The two dimensional behaviors of the existing upper tunnel and the ground at crossed area due to the excavation of a lower tunnel were studied experimentally, The model tests were conducted by changing the relative location of the existing upper tunnel and the lower tunnel. The results of the study show that a vertical earth pressure outside the loosened area was increased due to longitudinal arching effect same as a single tunnel. In case vertical distance between the upper and lower tunnel is 0.7 H and 1.0 H respectively (H is a height of the lower tunnel), vertical earth pressure increased in the loosened area behind the tunnel face. But when a vertical distance is 1, 3 H, ground behaviors appeared similarly to a single tunnel.

  • The structure such as underground external walls of buildings, conduit and box culvert supports the surcharge loads (point, strip and line loads) . The vertical and horizontal stresses in a soil mass depend on the backfill width and wall friction, etc. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the magnitude and the distributions of the lateral and vertical pressure which is occurred by the narrowly backfilled soil in an open cut by the surcharge loads. For these purposes, model tests were performed for various width of backfill in a model test box by considering the wall friction using carbon rods. The results of test were compared with the theories of Weissenbach and VS Army Code and also with the results of the numerical analysis using finite difference method which introduces Mohr-Coulomb failure hypothesis.
