  • We analyzed the Coulomb stress transfer near a small-scale reverse fault. For the modeling we used the geometry of a Quaternary fault in Gyeongju area, Eupcheon fault. For an assumed reverse faulting slip of 10cm, the resulting values of the Coulomb stress change are relatively higher (>2 bar) near the edges (both downward and lateral) of the fault, and diminish slightly upward and downward. The equivalents are negative in the zone immediately below and above the fault, exhibiting a "T" shape of low stress zone in the vertical profile of the fault. This study demonstrates the possible ranges and directions the aftershock energy would propagates after a reverse faulting.

  • In order to intuitively grasp the earth pressure direction acting on the structure and displacement state, displacement data in the horizontal and vertical directions were processed using the sigmoid function. A displacement coordinate system was set up for each axis. The system can intuitively check the current displacement and assess the management stage of each point. A displacement path can be compiled from continuously recorded points, allowing trends in the displacement's history and stress direction to be known. Analysis of data measured for excavated ground, found that displacement occurred in the direction of destressing at all points, and that the points' management state steady. Similar behavior trends were found among measurement points with high spatial correlation, whereas differing behavior trends occurred among measurement points with low spatial correlation. If the correlation analysis of the precursor and behavior area is performed using the continuously distributed surface settlement data and displacement coordinate system, it will be possible to predict the failure time and area.

  • The delivery of optimal orthodontic treatment is greatly influenced by clinician's ability to predict and control tooth movement by applying well-known force system to dentition. It is very important to determine the location of the centers of resistance of a tooth or teeth in order to have better understanding the nature of displacement characteristics under various force levels. In this study, three dimensional finite element analysis was used to measure the initial displacement of the consolidated teeth under loading. The purpose of this study was to define the location of the centers of resistance at the upper six anterior segment. To observe the changes of six anterior segment, 200gm, 250gm, 300gm, and 350gm forces at right and left hand side each were imposed toward lingual direction. For this study, two cases, six anterior teeth and six anterior teeth after corticotomy, were reviewed. In addition, it was reviewed the effects of changes on the location of the center of resistance in both cases based on different degree of forces aforementioned. The results were that : 1. The instantaneous center of resistance for the six anterior teeth was vertically located between level 4 and level 5, which is, at 6.76mm, $44.32\%$ apical to the cementoenamel junction level. 2. The instantaneous center of resistance for the six anterior teeth after corticotomy was located vertically between level 4 and level 5, that is, at 7.09mm $46.38\%$ apical to the cementoenamel junction level. 3. Changes of force showed little effect on the location of the center of resistance in each case. 4. It was observed that the location of the instantaneous center of resistance for the six anterior teeth after corticotomy was changed more than the six anterior teeth without corticotomy to the apical part, and the displacement of the consolidated anterior teeth moved further in case of the consolidated teeth after corticotomy.

  • In the elastic wave equations, both horizontal and vertical displacements are defined. Since we can measure both the horizontal and vertical displacements in field acquisition, these displacements compose a displacement vector. In this study, we propose a frequency-domain elastic waveform inversion technique taking advantage of the magnitudes of displacement vectors to define objective function. When we apply this displacement-vector objective function to the frequency-domain waveform inversion, the inversion process naturally incorporates the back-propagation algorithm. Through the inversion examples with the Marmousi model and the SEG/EAGE salt model, we could note that the RMS error of the solution obtained by our algorithm decreased more stably than that of the conventional method. Particularly, the density of the Marmousi model and the low-velocity sub-salt zone of the SEG/EAGE salt model were successfully recovered. Since the gradient direction obtained from the proposed objective function is numerically unstable, we need additional study to stabilize the gradient direction. In order to perform the waveform inversion using the displacementvector objective function, it is necessary to acquire multi-component data. Hence, more rigorous study should be continued for the multi-component land acquisition or OBC (Ocean Bottom Cable) multi-component survey.

  • In order to release the pressure fluctuations and micro-pressure wave induced by the entering of train into the small cross sectional tunnel, it has been reported that the construction of air shaft has more advantages with respect to economy and constructability than the enlargement of cross section of existing tunnel. The field monitorings and analytical studies were conducted simultaneously in this study to analyze the mechanical behavior of existing railway tunnel, new cross tunnel and new shaft by the construction of new shaft nearby. The results showed that the minimum distance from existing tunnel to new shaft which secures the stability of existing tunnel was found to be half diameter of existing tunnel. On the three dimensional mechanical behavior of existing tunnel by the construction of new shaft, the results from the analytical study and field monitoring had a similar trend. The analytical study and field monitoring results, however, produced somewhat different results on the mechanical behavior of new shaft itself. These conclusions induce that the analytical method which has been applied on the analyses of horizontal tunnel could not be applied in the same way on the analysis of vertical shaft.

  • The effects of specimen geometry and loading conditions on the stress distribution in a sandwich specimen under combined loads are investigated by elastic finite element analysis. A commercial software NASTRAN is used in plain-strain two-dimensional finite element analysis of sandwich specimens; the analysis was performed for three different specimen shape factors and four different combined displacement conditions. The results of computational analysis suggest that the effect of the combined displacement angle, which is defined as the ratio of the shear displacement to the normal displacement, on the size of the non-homogeneous stress distribution is observed only in the case of the shear stress and von Mises stress. Also as the combined displacement angle increases, the size of the nonhomogeneous stress distribution decreases in the case of the shear stress and increases in the case of the von Mises stress. In addition, as the specimen shape factor, which is defined as the ratio of the specimen length to the height, increases, the size of the non-homogeneous stress distribution under combined displacement conditions decreases significantly.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the variability to compare local dynamic stability via a linear and nonlinear analysis during walking. Twenty four elderly males, 12 healthy elderly and 12 patients with osteoarthritise walked on a treadmill for 100 consecutive strides. Lyapunov exponent and correlation dimension and coefficient variation were calculated for the kinematic parameters to determine the dynamic stability during walking. The linear measures indicated that the healthy elderly demonstrated significantly higher variability in the ankle joint displacement. The nonlinear analysis revealed that COD for the knee joint angle were higher in patient with osteoarthritise. There were no coincidence in results between linear and nonlinear techniques over two groups. In light of nonlinear analysis, it was concluded that patients with osteoathritise showed higher local instability during walking.

  • Deformations of the dam have been monitored by control points buried in the upper and lower dam of Samrangjin pumped storage power plant. The horizontal and vertical deformation observations performed in 1997, 2002, 2007 are to identity movements of the dam body by comparing and analyzing control points. For that reason, it was difficult to analyze movements of the dam in detail. Therefore, this research has observed surface of the dam using terrestrial laser scanner and estimate movements of the dam by comparing and analyzing scanned and designed surfaces of the dam since building completion. Vertical deformation of upper dam took place in the middle of ridge of dam, maximum cross section, up to 1.5m. In the middle and middle bottom of the downstream slope, vertical deformation was produced 0.75m around SP4-2 point and 0.5m around SP4-4 point. The maximum subsidence of vertical deformation in the lower dam took place in the middle of ridge of dam and upper part of upstream slope and subsidence was analyzed from -0.4 to -1.0m respectively. The result of this research can be used as initial observation to analyze whole movement of the dam in the future.

  • A stone cultural heritage often lacks design drawing and detailed geometric informations, thus it becomes more difficult to conservation and restoration. Even though there is active database of detail shape information and numerical measurement for stone monuments, most of the data is in hard-to-utilize two-dimensional images. The new technology developed to overcome this problem is three-dimensional image scanning system. The multi-storied stone pagoda of the Daewonsa temple was analysed with 3D scanning image data then survey map with orientation displacement was evaluated. The difference of each side became apparent with the members of the stone properties was measured, also horizontal and vertical displacement occurred. Horizontal displacement occurred in increasing severity from left to right and from body section to upper part. The 8th roof stones are leaning toward northwest direction due to lateral displacement. The evaluation and measurement of displacement could cause a little errors due to the characteristics uneven surface of stone monuments, computer program and mistakes from the researcher. In future, more precise measurement and stability studies should be done to suggest that accurate data for conservation and understanding of damage condition can be provided.
