  • A hydrophone away is used to measure spatial distribution in underwater sound field and to detect incoming direction of sound waves in the ocean. It is not usually convenient to handle the hydrophone away because of its extensive scale. And it is not easy to purchase the hydrophone away because of expensive price. A hydrophone logger combined with a hydrophone and data logger was developed to consist conveniently of a hydrophone away for use to receive underwater sound waves. And a hydrophone array system with the hydrophone loggers was developed. Main configurations of the hydrophone 1o99er and the hydrophone array system are introduced in this paper. Also we present some measurement results by the hydrophone logger in a water tank and measurement examples on ambient noise in the sea by the hydrophone away system. And we discuss some advantages in use of the hydrophone array system.

  • The hydrophones is mounted in many applications on a vibrating surface and functions as an underwater acoustic signal receiver without sensing the vibrations from the mounting surface. However, their performance is usually degraded by the interference of exterior noises such as acoustic cavitation in water stream, host structural vibration in the hull, and propeller motions. This paper describes the design and evaluation of a self noise suppressing hydrophones which shows very poor sensitivity to the external noises, first, effects of the external noise on the its receiver performance is simulated with finite element method(FEM). Second, the geometrical variations are implemented on the original structure that include additional air pockets and acoustic walls which work as acoustic shied or scatter of the noises. The results show that the effect of the external noise is the most significant when it is applied near to the bottom of the side wall of the hydrophones. The transverse noise induced by the outside water flow is isolated most effectively when a thin compliant (damping) layer combined with two air pockets is inserted to the circumference of the nose. Noise level is reduced about fifty nine percent of that of the original structure.

  • For application to several MHz photoacoustic imaging systems, a needle hydrophone was designed and fabricated by using PMN-PZT piezoelectric single crystal, and its characteristics were evaluated through comparison with a commercial PVDF(Polybinylidene Fluoride) hydrophone of which receiving sensitivity is known. The simulation using the KLM model results show that the peak receiving impulse response for $50{\Omega}$ terminating impedance of the fabricated hydrophone is -261.6 dB re $1V/{\mu}Pa$ and the frequency response is relatively flat over 2 ~ 12 MHz with fluctuation less than 5 dB. The measurement results using tone burst signals also show that it has higher (ave. 10.9 dB) sensitivity than the commercial hydrophone in 2 ~ 8 MHz, and the receiving sensitivity of $-255.8{\pm}2.8$ dB re $1V/{\mu}Pa$ was measured for the fabricated hydrophone. In addition, it is known that the photoacoustic signals and the image of a hair obtained by a mechanical scanned photoacoustic imaging system with the fabricated hydrophone were bigger and better than those obtained with the commercial hydrophone.

  • Two-dimensional array hydrophones with $8{\times}8$ elements were designed and fabricated using the PVDF(Polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric film, and the method and system for ultrasonic field measurement in several MHz $\sim$ tens of MHz band using the hydrophones was established. The characteristics of frequency response relating to the backing materials were analyzed with the Mason equivalent circuit for design, and the accuracy of ultrasonic field measurement relating to the sizes and kerfs of piezoelectric elements was discussed. Good results of the measurement of ultrasonic field formed by a circular plane transducer of 2.25MHz in water were obtained by the system with the array hydrophones.

  • Because the biological tissue with inhomogeneous acoustic properties does not keep a particular shape, the measurement of propagation characteristics of ultrasonic fields by the conventional scanning method with a miniature hydrophone is difficult. In this study, a two-dimensional may hydrophone was fabricated using the PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) piezo-electric film and a ultrasonic field measurement system with it was established. For the acoustic field produced by a circular plan transducer with center frequency of 2.25㎒ and 13㎜ in diameter, it was possible to make a fairly accurate field measurement using the hydrophone system. The attenuation coefficients at 2.25 ㎒ for biological tissues were 0.7∼1.3 dB/cm(average; 1.0 dB/cm) in bovine liver, 1.0∼1.8 dB/cm (average; 1.6 dB/cm) in pig liver, 0.9∼2,9 dB/cm(average: 2.1 dB/cm) in bovine muscles, 1.7∼3.3 dB/cm (average; 2.5 dB/cm) in pig muscles.

  • This study deals with a method to localize a noise source occuring in a marine vehicle in a 3D environment. Even when access to the noise source is limited for a marine vehicle, such as a ship or a submarine in operation, the signal received on a hydrophone located elsewhere contains Doppler effected noise by moving relatively. This study suggests noise localization algorithm in 3D based on Doppler effect by moving marine vehicle. Using a known source mounted on the vehicle, the noise source was estimated by reducing the range of Doppler center and closest point of approach via the least square method. The algorithm was verified through various simulations and it was shown that the noise could be localized in 3D based on Doppler effect by employing two fixed hydrophones located at the vehicle's exterior points and a known reference signal generator located somewhere on the vehicle.

  • The effects of screening hydrophones with open-cell foams for reduction of the infrasonic self-noise induced by the flow around hydrophones are investigated by at-sea experiment. Test results of the 10 ppi polyurethane open-cell foams with different thickness show that the foams of 1 cm and 3 cm thickness reduce the flow-induced self-noises up to 20 dB and 28 dB at the frequency band of 2-10 Hz, respectively.

  • As the existing noise measuring device was affected the flow-field and structural vibration directly, new experimental device was required. Two Hydrophone Boxes are designed and their performances are investigated. The noise level of the KRISO cavitation tunnel is compared with those of the other cavitation tunnels which have been designed for the noise study. The present experimental results show the possibility of the full-scale prediction for propeller cavitation noise and the improvement of the measurement performance at the range of low-frequency.
