  • Recently, large-scale offshore and coastal structures have been constructed owing to the increasing interest in eco-friendly energy development. To achieve this, precise simulations of waves are necessary to ensure the safe operations of marine structures. Several experiments are required in the field to understand the offshore wave; however, in terms of scale, it is difficult to control variables, and the cost is significant. In this study, numerical waves under various wave conditions are produced using a piston-type wavemaker, and the produced wave profiles are verified by comparing with the results from a numerical wave tank (NWT) modeled using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method and theoretical equations. To minimize the effect by the reflected wave, a mass-weighted damping zone is set at the right end of the NWT, and therefore, stable and uniform waves are simulated. The waves are generated using the linear and Stokes wave theories, and it is observed that the numerical wave profiles calculated by the Stokes wave theory yield high accuracy. When the relative depth is smaller than two, the results show good agreement irrespective of the wave steepness. However, when the relative depth and wave steepness are larger than 2 and 0.04, respectively, the errors are negligible if the measurement position is close to the excitation plate. However, the error is 10% or larger if the measurement position is away from the excitation location. Applicable target wave ranges are confirmed through various case studies.

  • Effects of sediment and toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa on feeding behaviors of an omnivorous fish, gold fish (Carassius auratus) were examined in laboratory and in situ mesocosm. Laboratory feeding experiments were performed in small aquaria (7 L) with cyanobacterial blooms (mainly M. aeruginosa) under the condition of sediments and no-sediments, and toxic (NIES-298) and non-toxic M. aeruginosa (NIES-101). In situ feeding experiments were conducted at the shore of eutrophic lake (Lake Ilgam, Seoul) in the mid-July, 2005. Results showed that fish introduction decreased the concentration of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) at higher rate in no sediment-containing aquaria. In contrast, there was a drastic increase of Chl-a in the sedimentcontaining aquaria. Fish effectively removed the M. aeruginosa cells without algal toxin (microcystin). Fish also selectively removed the large size Chl-a (>$50{\mu}m$), although all kinds of nutrients were increased after fish introduction, especially ammonia. Our results indicate that the strategic introduction of domestic omnivores Carassius auratus, to control cyanobacterial bloom in eutrophic lake will negatively play in the water quality improvement via a sediment disturbance and a density-dependent digestion.

  • experimental and computational studies ore carried out to investigate the natural convection of the single phase flow in a tank with a heated horizontal plate facing downward. This is a simplified model for investigations of the influence of a core melt at the bottom of a reactor vessel on the thermal hydraulic behavior in a oater filled cavity surrounding the vessel. In this case the vessel is simulated by a hexahedron insulated box with a heated plate Horizontally mounted at the bottom of the box. The box with the heated plate is installed in a water filled hexahedron tank. Coolers are immersed in the U-type water volume between the box and the tank. Although the multicomponent flows exist more probably below the heated plate in reality, present study concentrates on the single phase flow in a first step prior to investigating the complicated multicomponent thermal hydraulic phenomena. In the present study, in order to get a better understanding for the natural convection characteristics below the heated plate, the velocity and temperature are measured by LDA(Laser Doppler Anemometry) and thermocouples, respectively. And How fields are visualized by taking pictures of the How region with suspended particles. The results show the occurrence of a very effective circulation of the fluid in the whole How area as the heater and coolers are put into operation. In the remote region below the heated plate the new is nearly stagnant, and a remarkable temperature stratification can be observed with very thin thermal boundary. Analytical predictions using the FLUTAN code show a reasonable matching of the measured velocity fields.

  • Boring caracteristics, boring rate, and predation, rates on the valves of the seed and adult clams of Meretrix petechialis by Glossaulax didyma didyma in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor rearing aquarium were investigated by various morphometric data. The investigations were carried out from June to September, 2007. The morphology of drilled holes on the valves of M. petechialis showed the crater type as seen in the spats of Ruditapes philippinarum and M. lusoria. The sizes of the outer diameters of holes were greater than the inner diameters of the holes on the valves of M. petechialis in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. On the whole, the sizes of the holes on the valves of the seeds of M. petechialis was smaller than those bored holes on the adult valves. The location of the bored holes on the valves of the seeds varied widely with the the sizes of the individuals of M. petichialis, while most of holes on the valves of adult clams were located near the umbo position of the valves of the clams in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. On the whole, the outer and inner diameters of the bored holes increased with increase of shell lengths of the clams in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor rearing aquarium at the laboratory. The authors could confirm experimentally the boring snail, G. didyma didyma, drilled the seeds and adult clams of M. petechialis. In the experiments for 15 days (three times repeated) in the indoor rearing aquarium at the laboratory, the mortality of dead shells to total shells of M. petechialis by boring snail Glossaulax didyma didyma was totally average 41.5%, and percent of drilled shells to total dead shells of clams by the boring snail was average 47.1%. Of total shells, percent of drilled shells to total shells of clams by the boring snail was totally average 19.3%. Predation of G. didyma didyma were greater at night than the day time. Average 0.5 seed and adult individuals of M. petewchialis were consumed per G. didyma didyma, per day. Predation varied with shell lengths of M. petechialis and shell widths of G. didyma didyma.

  • Fire-resistant boom is one of the most important facilities in in situ homing of spilled oil. Thermal response of a fire-resistant boom to turning is experimentally investigated in this paper by using an electric furnace and a burning test facility. This test facility is composed of a test tank, a fire boom, a hood for inhaling smoke, an incinerator for burning up gases and thermocouples, etc. Thereby a systematic method of approach in small laboratory scale is developed to study the performance of a fire-resistant boom. Burning test is carried out for the fire boom model which has been developed through the present study. It is shown that the present fire boom model has capability to withstand the high temperature around 800℃ and high rate of heat flux on it due to homing. For more realistic experimental environments, larger dimensions in devices and longer time in experiments are recommended in near future.

  • This paper presents a comparison of experimental value by electrolytic tank experimental apparatus and calculated value by CDEGS program for potential rise of structure. When a test current flowed through structure models, potential rise was measured and analyzed for types of structure using the electrolytic tank experimental apparatus in real time, and was computed by means of CDEGS program. The structure models were designed and fabricated with four types on a scale of one-one hundred sixty. When the experimental data were compared with the theoretical values, the similar profile was shown. Therefore, the confidence of measurement was obtained. Potential rise was the lowest value at electric cage type(structure model B). The distributions of potential rise are dependent on the resistivity and absorption percentage in concrete attached to structure.

  • The impact forces of the highly nonlinear waves are one of the important factors in designing the ocean structures. The impact forces are very difficult to analyze numerically and experimentally because they are impulsive in magnitude and occur instantaneously. In this study the numerical program based on N.S. equations are used to investigate the impact forces of steep waves where the waves are gene rated by the wave maker in the numerical wave basin. The arbitrary steep waves are generated by the superposition of waves of single frequency and the impact forces on vertical cylinder are simulated on the multiblock grids. V.O.F. and the local height function methods are used to track the free surfaces. To validate the numerical analysis the numerical results are compared with the experimental ones and the acceptable agreements are found. It is thought that more studies on the simulations of the incoming breaking waves and the impact forces on the vertical cylinder should be made to obtain the useful results to be applied in the offshore design.

  • In this paper, ship performance prediction solver was developed using open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) libraries. The mass- and momentum-conservation equations and turbulent model with a wall function for the turbulent closer were considered. The volume fraction transport equation with a high-resolution interface capturing scheme were selected for free-surface simulation. The predicted wave pattern around KRISO container ship (KCS) using developed program showed good agreement against existing experimental data. For the revolution of a propeller in the propulsive test, general grid interface (GGI) library was used. The predicted propulsive performance showed 7 % difference against experimental data. Two-phase mixture model was developed to simulate a cavitation and applied to a propeller. The sheet cavitation on the propeller was predicted well. From results, the potential of the numerical tank developed by open source libraries was verified by applying it to KCS.

  • This study investigated the flow characteristics in an annular flume with a free water surface using the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter(ADV) in the laboratory. The flow was driven by the rotation of the inner cylinder in a way designed not to interfere with flocculation of cohesive sediments. The effect of the inner cylinder for the longitudinal velocities showed highest near the moving boundary and decreased towards the outer wall. At the lower longitudinal velocity, there was a peak in turbulent kinetic energy near the bed, whereas it moved upward to with increasing of the velocity. The longitudinal velocities estimated using the power law were in good agreement with the measured values than the values predicted by the log-law with roughness lengths. The average friction velocities evaluated by Reynolds shear stress were smaller than the values calculated using the log-law and power law when increasing the longitudinal velocity.
