  • This study investigated secondary beginning science-gifted education teachers' reflection on their science teaching through coteaching with the case study. We selected two beginning teachers whose teaching careers in secondary science-gifted education were less than five years. The teachers planned, performed, and reflected together their science teaching for science-gifted students during nine class hours over three times. We observed their science classes through coteaching, and analyzed the transcripts for reflective discussions between them and their reflective journals in terms of 'productive reflection,' a concept suggested by Davis (2006). The results revealed that the aspects of 'instructional strategies and instruction for science-gifted education' and 'science-gifted students' were most frequently included in their reflection processes on science teaching, regardless of the type of data and the class time. 'Curriculum for science-gifted education' were also frequently included although fewer than two previous aspects. However, 'subject matter knowledge' and 'assessment' was hardly included. Two to four aspects among five aspects of the science teaching for science-gifted students were variously integrated in their reflection processes. Especially, the integrations between 'instructional strategies and instruction for science-gifted education' or 'sciencegifted students' and the other aspects were most frequent, and this tendency was stronger in more experienced teacher in science-gifted education. The integrations between 'subject matter knowledge' and the other aspects were often included in the more experienced teacher's reflection processes.

  • In this study, we investigated the features of using smart devices in socioscientific issues (SSI) debate classes. Twenty-seven high school students in Gyeonggi-do participated in this study. The processes of the SSI debate classes with smart devices were classified into five stages: data searching, data sharing, summary and organization of data, debate in the classroom, and online debate. Then some features at each stage were identified. It was found that they collected self-directed and in-depth data while reflecting their knowledge and experience, and selected data which were easy to understand at the stage of data searching. The specificity and validity of the evidences gathered and the clarity of the sources were improved at the stage of data sharing, although they shared more data offline than online. They organized their data by using paper rather than smart devices at the stage of summary and organization of data. Most of them failed to use the summary in debate. They argued and refuted based on concrete grounds at the stage of debate in the classroom, which raised students' interest in debate and led students to participate actively. At the stage of online debate, they were able to rearrange and review the arguments of both sides, and the participation of the students who were passive in classroom debate was enhanced. Based on these results, we suggest some effective teaching methods for SSI debate classes using smart devices.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of storytelling lessons using picture books on the resilience of adolescents and the parent-child relationships in the family unit of home economics subject in middle school. For this purpose, I selected picture books of five themes on family type, family relationship, family conflict, sexual violence, domestic violence, and family loss, and developed a teaching-learning process plan for 'Family class with picture book' using storytelling elements and techniques. The teaching-learning plan was applied to 194 middle school students in technology·home economics classes, and the learning effet was evaluated by comparing pre- and post-tests. As a result, the resilience level perceived by adolescents increased significantly after class, but no significant effect was found on self-expansion, which is a sub-factor of sociality. In the parent-child relationship of adolescents, the effect of instruction was shown in all areas, and the affectional bonds felt in the relationship with mother than with father showed higher increase. In the family unit of home economics, storytelling lesson through picture book seems to have a positive influence on the adolescents in their relationship with the family by bringing up the potential power in them to stand against the adversities they may face.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore and better understand special education music teachers' perceptions of their music curriculum. For this purpose, we conducted a focus group interview with seven special education music teachers. During the interview, four major themes and 14 sub-themes were identified. The main themes were the following: (a) types of applied activities and the goals of music classes (e.g., activities to be applied in various ways depending on the characteristics of the disability and intended outcome), (b) difficulty in implementing the music curriculum (e.g., lack of fit between textbook and students' chronological ages, lack of time and focus, self-evaluation of performance as a music teacher, (c) therapeutic experiences during music classes (e.g., expectation for positive effects through music therapy, joy of witnessing changes in students, and sense of togetherness), and (d) obstacles to the therapeutic approach of music classes and need for support (e.g., lack of professional knowledge regarding therapeutic approaches and problems with administrators and school environment). Based on these results, problems in implementing the music therapy approach as part of the music curriculum in special education schools are discussed and practical solutions for educators are offered.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal what mathematics teachers focus on and how they assess students' thinking during lessons enacted. For this purpose, we googled and searched internet sites to collect formative assessment materials for the year 2014 to 2019. The formative assessment tasks data were analyzed according to the levels cognitive demand levels and tasks suggested in textbooks in terms of degrees to which how they are related. The data analysis suggested as follows: a) most of the formative assessment tasks were at the low-level, in particular, PNC level tasks that require applying particular procedures without connections to concepts and meaning underlying the procedures, b) the assessment tasks appeared to be very similar to the tasks suggested in the secondary mathematics textbooks, and c) it seemed that 3 types of formative assessment, observation notes, self-assessment, and peer-assessment were dominantly utilized during mathematics lessons and these different types of formative assessment were employed apparently to find out whether students participated actively in class and in group activity, not how they go through understanding or thinking processes.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the nature of the science views of science teachers and high school students as well as the views expressed in 10th grade science textbooks. The subjects were a high school science teacher, 18 male students and 11 female students in a 10th grade class located in Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. The data were analyzed in terms of three main categories of the nature of the science: the definition of science, the development of science, and the method of science. In the results, it was found that the textbook had an inductivism point of view, and that the teacher had a falsificationism point of view in terms of the definition of science. However, the teacher presented the inductive point of view of the textbook in the class. After the class, the students showed an inductive point of view. In terms of scientific development, the textbook represented a relativism point of view briefly, and the viewpoint of the teacher also expressed relativism. The teacher taught briefly from the relativism point of view, as in the textbook. The viewpoints of the students were inductivism and were not affected by the textbook or the explanations of the teacher. In terms of scientific methods, the viewpoints of the textbook and the teacher were falsificationism, and the teacher represented falsificationism views in her classes. The views of the students also showed falsificationism after their classes. However, before conclusions can be made, it is necessary to find concrete proof of the teaching effect on the viewpoints of the students in continuing research.

  • Several studies have reported on how and what mathematically gifted students develop superior ability or creativity in geometry and algebra. However, there are lack of studies in probability area, though there are a few trials of probability education for mathematically gifted students. Moreover, less attention has paid to the strategies to develop gifted students' creativity. This study has drawn three teaching strategies for creativity development based on literature review embedding: cognitive conflict, multiple representations, and social interaction. We designed a series of tasks via reconstructing, so called Simpson's paradox to meet these strategies. The findings showed that the gifted students made Quite a bit of improvement in creativity while participating in reflective thinking and active discussion, doing internal and external connection, translating representations, and investigating basic assumption.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the middle school science textbooks published according to the 7th curriculum by analyzing overall structure of the books and STS contents, and to diagnose the current status of STS education in science classroom through interviews with teachers and students of the middle schools. It was found that STS approaches were of increasing importance in the science textbooks, however, they were not popular in the science classes. STS topics in the middle school textbooks were related mostly to 'applications of science' and 'social problems and issues', and few of the topics were related to 'cooperative work on real problems', 'multiple dimensions of science' and 'practice with decision making strategies'. Major barriers of STS education implementation in middle school science classroom were identified as follows; difficulties of assessment, teachers' insufficient cognitions and experiences regarding STS education, perceptions of students and parents that prefer didactic lecture methods and working on exercises. Desirable directions for the improvement of present status of STS education in middle school science classes were proposed.
