  • This study investigated the effects of group processing in cooperative learning using task-oriented reward on students' science achievement, science learning motivation, and attitude toward science instruction. Eighth graders (N=58) selected from a middle school in Seoul, were randomly assigned to either the treatment or comparison group, and taught on the 'Separation of Mixture' over 8 class hours. The treatment group received cooperative learning using task-oriented reward containing group processing (GCL), while the comparison group received cooperative learning using task-oriented reward without group processing (CL). Significant interactions between the instruction and prior achievement level were found in the achievement and the attitude toward science instruction. High-level students in the GCL group performed better than those in the CL group, while low-level students in the CL group performed better than their counterparts.

Subjects consisted of 2nd grade students of four classes in a girls middle school located at the southern part of Seoul. Four classes were divided into experimental and control groups by two classes randomly. The experimental groups have been instructed on the related-general concepts for six times and then received seven NIE programs developed by researcher for seven times. The control groups have received the instruction through the conventional teaching method. The NIE learning has been progressed following the steps using in the Iowa Chautaugua Program, e.g. invite, explore, propose explanation and solutions, and take action. NIE programs, e.g. project studying, topic studying and a crossword puzzle have been developed and applied using 'science first' approach of the STS instruction. Twenty questions related to social implications of science and leisure interest in science within seven frameworks of TOSRA have been used in this study as an evaluation instrument of science-related attitude. Learning achievement has been evaluated using an instrument developed by researcher. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. (1) NIE approach was more effective in progressing learning achievement of middle school students than conventional teaching method (p<.01). (2) Experimental groups show statistically significant improvement on science-related attitude than control groups (p<.01). There were no significant interactions between treatment methods and students' learning ability on learning achievement and leisure interest in science. The NIE approach were more effective than the conventional one on social implications of science, especially to low ability students.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of students' storytelling on the science learning motivation and science related attitude in elementary science class. We had developed storytelling materials for 11 class hours on the 'Heat transfer and our life' unit based on the analysis of the 4th grade-science curriculum. The research sample was 22 4th graders who were belonged to one of the classes at an elementary school in Gwangju. The test of students' science learning motivation and science related attitude were administered before and after the storytelling treatment, and the difference was checked by the paired t-test using SPSS program. Students' perceptions on the storytelling were also investigated. The conclusions of this research are as follows. First, the students' storytelling tend to have somewhat positive influence on learning motivation. The each mean of post-test in the domain of attention, confidence and satisfaction was significantly higher than that of pre-test. Second, students' storytelling have a positive influence on scientific attitude. Although the means of post-test were higher than those of pre-test in both science subject attitude and scientific attitude domain, a statistically significant difference was found only in the scientific attitude domain. For future researches, the development of more story-materials or strategies for effective storytelling is needed.
