Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing infection-related characteristics and patient safety culture on awareness of blood-borne infection prevention between operating room nurses and general ward nurses. Methods: Participants were 198 nurses(operating room nurses 98 and general ward nurses: 100) working at three general hospitals and three university hospitals in three cities. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from September 11 to October 14, 2020. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with IBM SPSS/WIN 26.0 program. Results: Typically, 39.8% of nurses in the operating room and 24.0% of ward nurses experienced injuries such as needles and sharp instruments used by the patient. The awareness of patient safety culture was identified to be higher for the ward nurses. Factors influencing the awareness of blood-borne infection prevention in operating room nurses were patient safety culture and wearing protective equipment for infection prevention while nursing infected patients. Moreover, the explanatory power of these variables was 19.4%. In general ward nurses, the patient safety culture was identified as a significant predictor, which accounted for 16.5% of awareness of blood-borne infection prevention. Conclusion: To prevent hospital infection, a strategy is needed to improve the level of awareness of blood-borne infection prevention and patient safety culture of operating room nurses. To this end, the difference in infection-related characteristics and influencing factors between the operating room nurses and the general ward nurses should be considered and planned.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a mobile app-based musculoskeletal exercise program (AMSEP) for operating room (OR) nurses and evaluate its effects on self-efficacy, the flexibility of the shoulders, lower back, and legs, and musculoskeletal symptoms and fatigue. Methods: The AMSEP was developed based on the information-motivation-behavioral skill model. In total, 48 OR nurses were recruited at a university hospital in Korea and divided into an experimental group (n=24) and a control group (n=24), matched for career experience in the OR. The experimental group participated in the AMSEP, while the control group received a booklet regarding musculoskeletal exercise. Results: The experimental group showed significant increases in self-efficacy (t = -2.77, p = .008) and flexibility of the right shoulder (t = -4.08, p < .001), left shoulder (t = -3.28, p = .002), lower back (t = -3.75, p < .001), and legs (t = -3.96, p < .001) compared to the control group. Musculoskeletal symptoms (t = 2.75, p = .008), and fatigue (Z = -1.98, p = .048) significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that the AMSEP for OR nurses provided information on the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders and methods of exercise, as well as an opportunity for continued exercise performance through self-management. The AMSEP was easily accessible and effective in increasing self-efficacy and flexibility and reducing musculoskeletal symptoms and fatigue.
The purpose of this study was to investigates the perception on medical technology, self-efficacy, and professional self conception of OR nurses. The data was collected by distributing structured questionnaires to 164 OR nurses in 13 secondary hospitals located in Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do, beginning Apr. 12th to the 24th of 2010, and analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. The correlation between perception on medical technology and professional self conception showed to be positively correlated at r = .222. The correlation between self-efficacy and perception on medical technology showed positive correlation at r = .197. Also, the correlation between self-efficacy and professional self conception was r = .609, showing a relatively high positive correlation. We have observed that the perceptions of nurses on medical technology and their self efficacy have a significant effect in professional self consciousness. Therefore, it is important to develop programs that increase self-efficacy and followed by policies to maintain them.

Purpose: This study was to compare nursing performance by career levels in a career ladder system. Methods: This survey was conducted with 140 OR staff nurses. Ten unit managers evaluated their own staff with a performance evaluation tool composed of 51 items. Data were analyzed by frequency, t-test, one-way ANOVA, ${\chi}^2$-test, and ANCOVA. Results: In career level CN II, nursing performance showed differences by personal characteristics. However, there was no significant difference in level CN III. CN IIIs' nursing performance was significantly higher than CN IIs' in all domains. Nursing performance of CN III was significantly higher than CN IIs' in 5 to 10 years of clinical experience. Although there was no significant difference in other clinical experience groups, CN IIIs' scores were always higher than CN IIs' Conclusion: The results indicate that nursing performance improves with career ladder advancement. Organizations should encourage advancement to higher levels and eliminate obstacles.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the effects of verbal violence experience, social support, and coping patterns on job stress among operating room(OR) nurses. Methods: The participants were 214 operating room nurses in general hospitals. Data were collected from April 1st to May 1st in 2013 and were analyzed using a multiple regression. Results: The most influencing factor on job stress for OR nurses was verbal violence experience from doctor(${\beta}=.35$), and verbal violence experience from nurse (${\beta}=.27$) followed. Social support from co-workers was a significant factor in decreasing job stress (${\beta}=-.22$). Those three factors explained 43.0% (F=54.76, p<.001) of OR nurses' job stress. Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed that doctors' and nurses' verbal violence increased job stress of OR nurses and social support from co-workers was found decreasing OR nurses' job stress. The results of the study provides an necessity for developing an effective program for minimizing job stress of OR nurses caused by work place verbal violence.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of foot mats on reducing levels of fatigue, discomfort, lower extremity edema and skin temperature in scrub nurses during surgery. Methods: This study employed one group repeated measures design in which 16 scrub nurses (ages 22-38) stood on steel footstools (SF) during scrub as the conventional test and stood on SF with foot mats as the experimental test. Levels of fatigue, discomfort, lower extremity edema and skin temperature were measured before the first surgical hand scrub and right after the first surgery of the day for 3 consecutive days in both tests. Results: The changes in levels of fatigue and discomfort were significantly different between tests (p<.001~.033). Edema, determined by the differences in circumferences of the ankles and calves before and after the surgery was also significantly different between groups (p=.001~.011). However, the change in skin temperature on the foot tops of both feet was not different between tests (p=.351~.467). Conclusion: The results of this study show that using foot mats on top of the steel footstool is effective in reducing the levels of fatigue, discomfort and lower extremity edema in scrub nurses during surgery.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between nursing error experience, coping behavior and job stress in operating room. Methods: A descriptive research design was used in this study. The participants were 228 operating room nurses in G city who surveyed between October 25 and November 25, 2017 using self-report questionnaires. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS/WIN 24.0/AMOS WIN 24.0 Program, which determined frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson correlation coefficient, and structural equation model. Results: There were significant positive correlations between six sub-categories of nursing errors and job stress. We found negative correlations between coping behavior and job stress. There was a mediating effect of active coping between knowledge of nursing error and job stress. We found passive coping between inspection & monitoring related error and job stress. Conclusion: Study findings suggest that adequate education and the improvement in hospital environment and system should be required to reduce the nurses' job stress related to the patients' safety in operating room.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aromatherapy on stress, fatigue, mood, and vital signs of the nurses in the operating rooms.
