Catalytic combustion type gas sensors were fabricated by using noble metal(Pt and Pd) added ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ powder with specific surface area of $200\;m^2/g$. The fabricated sensor showed power consumption of 500 mW at the operating voltage of 1.75 V and high sensitivity of about 120 mV for butane, methane, or propane 100%LEL, respectively. The sensor properties also showed good linearity to hydrocarbon gas concentration variation, reproductivity and stability for relative humidity variation. And it showed high stability in butane ambient for 100 days.
We have fabricated the Pd-blck/NiCr gate MISFET-type $H_2$ sensor to detect the hydrogen in atmosphere. A differential pair-type structure was used to minimize the intrinsic voltage drift of the MISFET. The Pd-black film was deposited in the argon environment by thermal evaporation. In order to eliminate the blister formation in the surface of the hydrogen sensing gate metal, Pd-black/NiCr double metal layer was deposited on the gate insulator. The scanning electron microscopy and the auger electron spectroscopy was used to analyze their surface morphology and basic structure. The Pd-black/NiCr gate MISFET has been shown high sensitivity and stability more than Pd-planar/NiCr gate MISFET.
This paper presents the optical hydrogen sensor based on transparent 3C-SiC membrane and photovoltaic effect. Gasochromic materials of Pd and Pd/$WO_3$ were deposited by sputter on 3C-SiC membrane for gas sensing area. Gasochromic materials change to transparency by exposure to hydrogen. The variations of light intensity by hydrogen generate the photovoltaic of P-N junction between N-type 3C-SiC and P-type Si. Single layer of Pd shows higher photovoltaic compared with Pd/$WO_3$. However, phase transition from ${\alpha}$ to ${\beta}$ is shown at 6 %. Pd/$WO_3$ structure show the more linear response to hydrogen range of 2 % ~10 %. Also, almost 2 times fast response and recovery characteristics are shown at Pd/$WO_3$. These fast performances are come from the fact that Pd promoted the chemical reaction between hydrogen and $WO_3$.

Flat type catalytic combustible hydrogen sensors were fabricated using platinum micro-heaters and sensing material pastes. The platinum micro-heater was formed on an alumina substrate by sputtering method. The paste for the sensing materials was prepared using ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ 30 wt%, $SnO_2$ 35 wt%, and Pd/Pt 30 wt% and coated on the platinum micro-heater. The sensing performances were tested for the prepared sensors with different substrate sizes. The micro catalytic combustible hydrogen sensors showed quick response time, high reliability, and good selectivity against various gases(CO, $C_3H_8,\;CH_4$) at low operating temperature of $156^{\circ}\C$.
An array structure of conducting polymer microtubule was fabricated for an amperometric biosensor. 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) was electropolymerized in the microporous template membrane with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT/PSS) composite as a binder. The array structure can provide enhanced current collecting capability due to large active surface area compared to the macroscopic area of the electrode itself. For a biosensor application, the array electrode was tested for $H_2O_2$ detection and showed very sluggish electrochemical response to $H_2O_2$. To enhance the detection efficiency to the oxidation of $H_2O_2$, gold was treated on the electrode by two different approaches: sputtering and electrochemical deposition. Gold treatment with either method greatly enhanced the sensitivity of the electrode to $H_2O_2$. So, conducting polymer microtubule array with gold treatment was expected to be a sensitive amperometric biosensor system based on the detection of $H_2O_2$.

The sensitivity of ISFET glucose sensor is improved by employing amperometric actuation method. However, this method takes long time to recover the primary output voltage after measurement because of slow migration of the hydrogen ion between internal and external sensing membranes. Consequently, such a recovery-time delaying problem is one of obstacles to a practical use. In this paper, a new method is proposed to control the concentration of hydrogen ion in internal membrane, which applies a reduction potential to the working electrode for supplying hydroxide ion. Experimental results show that the recovery-time was reduced within 2 minute against decades minute of conventional method.

Thick film $H_2$ sensors were fabricated using $SnO_2$ loaded with $Ag_2O$ and $PtO_x$. The composition that gave the highest sensitivity for $H_2$ was in the weight% ratio of $SnO_2 : PtO_x : Ag_2O$ as 93 : 1 : 6. The nano-crystalline powders of $SnO_2$ synthesized by sol-gel method were screen printed with $Ag_2O$ and $PtO_x$ on alumina substrates. The fabricated sensors were tested against gases like $H_2$, $CH_4$, $C_3H_8$, $C_2H_5OH$ and $SO_2$. The composite material was found sensitive against $H_2$ at the working temperature $130^{\circ}C$, with minor interference of other gases. The $H_2$ gas as low as 100 ppm can be detected by the present fabricated sensors. It was found that the sensors based on $SnO_2-Ag_2O-PtO_x$ system exhibited the high performance, high selectivity and very short response time to $H_2$ at ppm level. These characteristics make the sensor to be a promising candidate for detecting low concentrations of $H_2$.
Pt deposited porous carbon nanofibers was prepared as a highly sensitive material of hydrogen gas sensor operating at room temperature. Nanofibers was obtained by electrospinning method using polyacrylonitrile as a carbon precursor and then thermally treated for carbon nanofibers. Chemical activation of carbon nanofibers was carried out to enlarge specific surface area up to $2093m^2/g$. Sputtered Pt layer was uniformly distributed keeping the original shape of carbon nanofibers. The hydrogen gas sensing time and sensitivity were improved based on effects of high specific surface area, micropore structure and deposited Pt catalyst.
In order to apply FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) sensor as one of reliable sensors in the commercial railway structure, the reliability of FBG sensor in the mechanical strength viewpoint have to be confirmed and the maximum strain should surpass the fracture strain of the host structure to measure the measurands until the host structures fail. In this paper, several factors that influence the mechanical failure strength of fiber Bragg grating sensors were analyzed. A set-up for dynamic tensile testing of optical glass fibers with fiber Bragg gratings was made. To increase the FBG failure strength, techniques relying on the H2 loading treatment and stripping methods were established and testified as a result of the tensile strength test of optical fibers.
