Recognition of cultural relativity through Yoruba culture in the ancient city of Ilé-Ifé, Nigeria (나이지리아 일레이페(Ilé-Ifé) 지역의 요루바 문화를 통해서 본 문화 상대성 재인식 - 조각상과 창조신화를 중심으로 -)

  • This paper examines the origin of the current Nigerian Yoruba artistic and cultural tradition through ancient artifacts and creation myths centered on $Il{\acute{e}}-If{\acute{e}}$ (or $If{\acute{e}}$) located in the southwestern part of Nigeria and recognition of cultural relativity. In the oral tradition, kingdoms of Ijebu, Oyo, and Benin all have their origins in the ancient city of $Il{\acute{e}}-If{\acute{e}}$, the cradle of Yoruba culture. Their founders were sons of Oduduwa, the god of Yoruba. In this way, kingdoms built around $Il{\acute{e}}-Ife$ were closely connected with culture, religion, and society. In order to understand the Yoruba culture, research on $Il{\acute{e}}-Ife$, the source of their artistic and cultural traditions, is very important. The Yoruba are deeply rooted in $Il{\acute{e}}-Ife$. They have been steadily preserving their artistry since the beginning. They have been using it in their lives to this day for centuries. Their evidences are mythology and Ifa divination system. They are cultural heritages that represent the art of Yoruba and the spiritual culture. Ifa devination system is one of Yoruba traditions associated with Yoruba gods 'Eshu' and 'Ifa'. It has been conducted among the Yoruba until now. If the culture and civilization of Africa, including these Yoruba traditional customs, are deemed illogical and superstitious, it would mislead their efforts to preserve the origin in its original form. If so, one should understand the relativity of other cultures and civilizations and the need for diversity and flexibility of value standards to judge their cultures and civilizations.

Effect of Saliva Contamination Stage and Different Decontamination Procedures on Bonding Strength of Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer (레진강화형 글라스아이오노머의 초기 결합력과 타액오염 제거의 상관관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) to dentin with saliva contamination at different stages and using different decontamination procedures. Extracted human permanent molars were embedded onto acrylic resin with the dentin surface exposed. Group I was a control group that was conditioned with polyacrylic acid (PAA). Groups II and III were contaminated with saliva before PAA conditioning and Groups IV, V, and VI were contaminated with saliva after PAA conditioning. After saliva contamination, Groups II and IV were dried, Groups III and V were rinsed and dried, and Group VI was additionally conditioned with PAA. After surface treatment, the dentin specimens were filled with RMGI. Group I showed significantly higher bond strength than the other groups. Group VI showed a significantly higher bond strength than the other saliva contaminated groups. However, there were no significant differences in the failure mode between the different groups. Saliva contamination impaired the bond strength of RMGI to dentin, regardless of when the saliva contamination occurred. Decontamination with washing and drying could not improve the shear bond strength of RMGIC. When saliva contamination occurred after PAA conditioning, additional PAA conditioning improved the shear bond strength.

Phenol, Flavonoid, and Total Polysaccharide Content according to Temperature Treatment of Raw, Red, and Soft Red Ginseng (인삼, 홍삼, 연질 홍삼의 온도처리에 따른 페놀, 플라보노이드 및 총 다당류 함량)

  • Korean ginseng has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine as an overall wellness supplement. Red ginseng (Ginseng Radix Rubra) is produced by steaming the roots, followed by drying. Soft red ginseng is produced using a new processing technology. This study investigated whether soft red ginseng differs from raw and hard red ginseng in its physicochemical composition. Results showed that the total phenol content of raw ginseng was 2.96 mg/g at 80℃ and 3.47 mg/g at 160 ℃. Meanwhile, the total phenols of hard and soft red ginseng were 4.12 mg/g and 4.18 mg/g at 160℃, respectively. The total phenol contents of raw, hard red, and soft red ginseng revealed a statistically significant difference (p>0.05). The total flavonoid contents of raw, hard red, and soft red ginseng were 2.62 mg/g, 3.97 mg/g, and 3.83 mg/g at 160℃, respectively. Among the three samples, soft red ginseng had the highest total sugar content at 160℃. The acidic polysaccharide contents of both soft and hard red ginseng were much higher than that of raw ginseng (49%-58%). Significant differences were observed among raw, hard red, and soft red ginseng (p<0.001). Soft red ginseng exhibited higher phenol content (25%), total flavonoid content (49%), and total sugar content (45%) than raw ginseng.

  • Lee Je-ma created Sasang Constitutional Medicine from the insight of different congenital formation of Viscera which was based on his own Morpho-Imaganary recognition of human beings. The basic principles to understand human beings are as follows. The first, human beings are morphologically figured based on the human nature. The Second, Morpho-lmaganary recognition was the understanding to all the things including human with the rule of society and the relationships. affairs-mind-body-objects. The Morpho-Imaganary characteristics of Sasang Constitutional Medicine are as follows. The first, Sasang Constitutional Medicine recognize the symptoms and diseases as the aspect of structure and function at the same time. The second, it recognize the symptoms and diseases with the viewpoint of Change.

A study on the hydration of sludge from limestone washing process in a steel making factory (제철소 석회석수세슬러지의 수화반응 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Hydration process is one of the basic carbonation system. Limestone sludge produced in Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. We tested for identify of hydration characteristics. The result obtained in this study can be summarized as follows; 1. The classify of limestone sludge is type of ground calcium carbonate(-3mm+325mesh)and the major mineral of calcite, and further more high grade(CaO 51%), fine powder(15~22$\mu\textrm{m}$). 2. Limestone sludge mixed two process sludge, first one is washing process sludge and the other one is wet collect kiln dust. The composition rate is about 8:2. Wet collect kiln dust is major mineral of calcite, too. But the sludge is assumed to one by quick lime, slaked lime and unreacted natural limestone. So, the ideal process is dividing of the washing process sludge and wet collect kiln dust. 3. We manufactured of slaked lime from limestone sludge. To investigate the effect of hydration reactor, the experiments was done with various reactor type as magnetic stirrer, shaking incubator and ultrasonic vibration reactor, respectively. Generally, ultrasonic vibration reactor is excellent hydration for limestone sludge and produced very fine slaked lime powder with ideal distribution. 4. The optimum condition is 10% pulp density, when the manufacture of fine slaked lime powder by ultrasonic vibration reactor. And hydration times to compare the results of the study with ultrasonic vibration reactor of generalized most short time(5~10 min). 5. Finally, the dispersive characteristics of slaked lime powder measured 1~5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ from limestone sludge were compared with those of natural limestone ones(10~20$\mu\textrm{m}$), in order to check applicability of slaked lime with hydration process from limestone sludge.

Effects of Trehalose and Oligosaccharide as Cryoprotectant in Chicken Surimi (계육 Surimi에 Trehalose와 Oligosaccharide의 냉동변성 방지효과)

  • Cryoprotective effects on chicken surimi during storage were investigated. Chicken surimi from mechanically deboned spent layer meat was prepared with 4 volumes of 0.5% NaCl washing, and then blended with or without cryoprotectants (8% trehalose, 8% oligosaccharide) prior to frozen storage at $-18^{\circ}C$ to 10 weeks Redness (a) of all surimi decreased during storage. Color stability increased during storage when lightness increased but redness decreased. At this Point, surimi maintained a better color quality as followed order; trehalose > oligosaccharide ) non-additive. Gel strength such as compressive force, hardness, adhesiveness and gumminess tended to decrease during frozen storage. Cryoprotectants provided significantly better textural properties than non-auditive. Surimi with trehalose showed the highest adhesiveness. In conclusion, trehalose and oligosaccharide seemed to be good cryoprotectants of chicken surimi. Especially, trehalose resulted in better cryoprotectant than oligosaccharide because of better color stability, better textural properties, and lower sweet characteristics.

Effect of Peeling Degrees and Drying Methods on the Quality of Paeonia lactiflora Pallas (작약근(芍藥根)의 박피정도(剝皮程度)와 건조방법(乾燥方法)에 따른 품질(品質) 특성(特性))

  • Peony is commonly used as roots that peeled and dried. But intact root contains higher medicinal constituents than peeled root (machine peeling). The yield of roots was also higher in intact roots. Use of intact root saved the labor time for peeling and 15% of root from yield loss by peeling. Paeoniflorin content was different with each zones of root. The content of Paeoniflorin was 5.11% in epidermis and 3.28% in cortex. When peeled peony roots were dried at hot air after briquet fire drying, root color was good for commercialization. But color of intact root was good at hot air drying without briquet fire drying. The required time for drying was longer in drying of intact roots than peeled roots drying.

'Saenara', a New Chuseok Season Apple Cultivar (추석용(秋夕用) 고품질 사과 '새나라' 육성(育成))

  • 'Saenara' released by National Horticultural Research Institute in 1997 is a mid-season apple cultivar with attractive red skin, high quality and high productivity. This cultivar originated from the cross between 'Spur EarliBlaze' and 'Spur Golden Delicious' at Suwon in 1981. It was first selected in 1992 and named 'Wonkyo Ga-08'. The regional adaptability test was carried out for 5 years from 1993 to 1997 at 7 different sites. 'Saenara' is medium in tree vigor and has a spreading tree form. It bears abundant flower buds on many spurs. It blossoms a day earlier than 'Spur Golden Delicious', 3 days later than 'Spur EarliBlaze'. Harvesting time of 'Saenara' is September 10, 140 days after full bloom at Suwon. Fruit shape is conical and skin color is bright red. Fruit weighs about 300 g and has $14.6^{\circ}Brix$ soluble solids content. It is susceptible to alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria mali Roberts).

  • Zinc alginate films were prepared by a film maker from sodium alginate solutions of different weight ratios and then they solidified into 3 wt% content $ZnCl_2$ coagulation solution and washed and dried at a $60^{\circ}C$ oven for 20 min. The characteristics were measured by several methods (antimicrobial activity, viscosity, FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDS, contact angle, tensile strength and solubility) and the film properties were investigated. The antimicrobial test showed that the zinc alginate films result in excellent antimicrobial activity in the two strains (Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus). The surface of zinc alginate film from the solution of 9 wt% sodium alginate showed more uniform shape than any other films and the cross-section were hard and rough when the films were well-solidified by the $ZnCl_2$ solution. The tensile strength of zinc alginate films increased along with the concentration of sodium alginate solution due to the cross-linking, and the initial thermal decomposition temperature increased gradually.

  • Intermediate parent "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" (Malus domestica Borkh.) was released from Fruit Research Division, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Korea in 2008. It was derived from the cross between "Starkrimson" and columnar type "McIntosh Wijcik" in 1992 after selection tests from 2000 to 2008. Trees are moderately vigorous and have spreading branching habit. It bears abundant flower buds on one-year-old branches and fruits mainly on spurs or short branches. Harvesting time of this variety is late September, 7 days later than that of "Hongro" in Suwon. The fruit is conical to narrow conical in shape and bright red in skin color. Fruit size is small with weight of 200~240g on an average and fruits have $14^{\circ}Bx$ soluble solid and medium acidity. It is moderately susceptible to alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria alternata). "Wonkyo Ga-Dangwagi 1" is a promising apple cultivar and will appeal to young people with good sugar-acid balance.
