  • This study performed simulating water absorption in various pre-cracked concretes. 2D-Finite Element Analysis (2D-FEA) model was developed based on experimental results on the amount of absorbed water in concrete with the exposure time. Results from the 2D-FEA showed that both crack width and crack depth strongly affect the amount of absorbed water in cracked concrete. In addition, water absorption rate is introduced and a predictive equation is suggested to estimate the rate in order to quantify the amount of absorbed water in cracked concrete. It was confirmed that water absorption in concrete having less than 150 mm crack depth was dominated as a main transport factor regardless of crack width. Therefore, considering that steel corrosion caused by chlorides dissolved in water mainly occurs in reinforced concrete structures, it is necessary that crack depth as well as crack width should be investigated in reinforced concrete structures at the time of field-inspection.

  • During soaking of 4 varieties of Korean soybeans in water at $4-98^{\circ}C$, an equilibrium state was reached after 3 hr at $60-98^{\circ}C$ but no equilibrium state was observed at $4-40^{\circ}C$ during soaking for 10 hrs. The moisture gain of soybeans held a linear relation with the square root of soaking time regardless of soaking temperatures, which indicated that the basic mechanism of water absorption was diffusion of water. The log time to reach a fixed moisture content showed a linear relation with the soaking temperature during soaking of soybeans at $4-60^{\circ}C$. The z-value decreased in proportions to the increase of hydration. The z-value to reach 50% hydration was the same in all soybeans.

  • The amount of evapotranspiration (water absorption) according to wind speed showed the same trend in gold mound (Spiraea × bumalda), Japanese spurge (Pachysandra terminalis), and ivy (Hedera japonica Tobler). All the three plants showed maximum water absorption at 4 m·s-1; water absorption tended to decrease as wind speed decreased. The control group without wind speed treatment had the most amount of water absorption compared with the groups that were subjected to wind exposure. However, the plant growth of all three plants increased to the maximum value when wind speeds were 2 and 1 m·s-1. When comparing the relationship among water absorption, air temperature, and relative humidity, the water absorption of plants tended to be low from May 20 to 26, when air temperature and relative humidity were the lowest. The results of this study will help establish an urban wall-planting system taking building wind into consideration. Further, this study may help in the selection of plant types for ecological parks in windy islands.

  • This research was conducted to determine the amount of water absorbed by a polyacrylamide hydrogel such as Stocksorb C (STSB), effect of salts on inhibition in hydration of STSB, and the hydrogel effects on changes of nutrient concentration in external solution. Absorption of deionized water by STSB reached a maximum of 180 $mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$. Monovalent soluble salts such as $KH_2PO_4,\;KNO_3$, and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ reduced absorption of the hydrogel, but the degrees of inhibition in absorption were similar in three kinds of salts. Twenty milliequivalents per liter of $Ca_{2+}\;or\;Mg_{2+}$ reduced water absorption of STSB to $14\%$ compared to those of deionized water. Solution absorption was consistently lower in the presence of divalent cations than in the presence of the monovalent cations. But the absorption was unaffected by the uncharged salt such as urea in all concentrations tested. The final $K^+\;and\;NH_4^+-N$ concentrations of the solution remaining after absorption by STSB was higher than those of the initial solution. The soaking of STSB to full strength of Hoagland solution resulted in increase of $NO_3^--N,\;H_2PO_4^-\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$ concentrations in external solution compared to initial solution, reaching 5,300, 250 and 1,500 $mL{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, at 24 hrs after soaking.

  • This study investigated the seed and water absorption characteristics of red bean cultivars in Korea. The length and width of all seeds were 7.74-8.99 mm and 5.33-5.54 mm, respectively. The hilum lengths and widths were 3.21-4.01 mm and 0.58-0.73 mm, respectively. The weight of 100 seeds was 12.14-20.21 g, and the seed coat thickness of red beans ranged from 39.18-50.01 mm. During soaking for 30 h, red beans exhibited a lag phase in the initial soaking time, followed by a rapid absorption phase, and finally contained more than 130% moisture. When water absorption was applied to the sigmoid equation, the curve fitting exhibited a high R2, and the kinetics of water absorption were 0.202-0.715 h-1, which differed among varieties. Pearson's correlation of hilum width (r=0.7858*) and seed thickness (r= -0.9954***) exhibited strong correlations with water absorption, suggesting that these are important factors in red bean processing.

  • Hydration rate of 35 Japonica and 24 J x Indica rice varieties at $23^{\circ}C$ was investigated and an attempt was made for a tentative classification of milled rice into six groups based on hydration rate. Each rice variety had characteristic value for hydration rate. In general, J x Indica rice hydrated at a faster rate than Japonica rice. Hydration rate was negatively correlated with the ratio of length to width of rice grain. No correlation was found between hydration rate and protein, amylose, surface area, volume or initial water grain.

  • Water uptake rates of barley (pressed, cutted and pearled) at $20^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ were determined by measuring the weight gain during soaking. Pressed barley absorbed water at the fastest rate, whereas pearled barley at the slowest rate. The former was the most temperature dependent during hydration. Degree of gelatinization, determined by X-ray diffractometry, during cooking at $100^{\circ}C$ indicated that the pressed barley cooked 1.4- and 2-times faster than Gutted and pearled barley, respectively.

  • Seven varieties of soybeans(Paldal, Danyeob, Jangbaek, Baegun, Jangyeob and 2 cultivars of Local 1 and Local 2) were investigated to compare the water uptake properties and volume changes during soaking in water. The hydration properties showed that the equilibrated weight increase ratio decreased as the soaking temperature raised to higher than $40^{\circ}C$, while the initial water uptake rate increased upto $80^{\circ}C$. The increase in hydration showed a linear relationship with the square root of the soaking time at $4^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. Local 1 was the highest in water uptake rate constant while Local 2 was the lowest. The activation energy calculated was in the range of $3,246{\sim}4,694\;cal/mole$. The Jangbaek and Local 1 were the highest and the Paldal was the lowest in the rate of volume increase. The activation energy for volume increase was in the range of $3,310{\sim}4,190\;cal/mole$. The z-values calculated from volume change was a little higher than those obtained from weight change.

  • Concentration change of soil-applied pretilachlor (2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl- N-2-propoxyethyl)-actanilide) was investigated under upland condition with various soil moisture contents ranging from 50 to 80%(water content by weight). Following pretilachlor from each soil solution was extracted by centrifugation using double tubes, its concentration was determined by HPLC. Pretilachlor concentration in the soil solutions were almost the same under various soil moisture conditions. However, the total amount of pretilachlor increased as the soil moisture content increased. With increasing soil moisture content, the bioactivity of soil-applied pretilachlor on inhibiting the growth of Echinochloa ultilis Ohwi et Yabuno and the absorption of $^{14}C$-pretilachlor in its plants were also enhanced. Our results demonstrate that the absorption of pretilachlor in plants varies with soil moisture content and thus the bioactivity of soil-applied pretilachlor on inhibiting plant growth is different under various soil moisture conditions at the same dosage based on air-dried weight.
