Spatial Data Analysis for the U.S. Regional Income Convergence,1969-1999: A Critical Appraisal of $\beta$-convergence (미국 소득분포의 지역적 수렴에 대한 공간자료 분석(1969∼1999년) - 베타-수렴에 대한 비판적 검토 -)

  • This paper is concerned with an important aspect of regional income convergence, ${\beta}$-convergence, which refers to the negative relationship between initial income levels and income growth rates of regions over a period of time. The common research framework on ${\beta}$-convergence which is based on OLS regression models has two drawbacks. First, it ignores spatially autocorrelated residuals. Second, it does not provide any way of exploring spatial heterogeneity across regions in terms of ${\beta}$-convergence. Given that empirical studies on ${\beta}$-convergence need to be edified by spatial data analysis, this paper aims to: (1) provide a critical review of empirical studies on ${\beta}$-convergence from a spatial perspective; (2) investigate spatio-temporal income dynamics across the U.S. labor market areas for the last 30 years (1969-1999) by fitting spatial regression models and applying bivariate ESDA techniques. The major findings are as follows. First, the hypothesis of ${\beta}$-convergence was only partially evidenced, and the trend substantively varied across sub-periods. Second, a SAR model indicated that ${\beta}$-coefficient for the entire period was not significant at the 99% confidence level, which may lead to a conclusion that there is no statistical evidence of regional income convergence in the US over the last three decades. Third, the results from bivariate ESDA techniques and a GWR model report that there was a substantive level of spatial heterogeneity in the catch-up process, and suggested possible spatial regimes. It was also observed that the sub-periods showed a substantial level of spatio-temporal heterogeneity in ${\beta}$-convergence: the catch-up scenario in a spatial sense was least pronounced during the 1980s.

An Analysis of the Absolute Vs. Conditional Convergency Hypothesis and the Determinants of Labor Productivity in Manufacturing Industries: The Korean Case (16개 광역시도별 제조업 부문에 대한 절대적 및 조건부 수렴가설 검증 및 생산성 결정요인 분석)

  • In this paper, we analysed the absolute and conditional convergency hypothesis and the determinants of productivity in manufacturing industries from 2000 to 2009 with 16 provinces and metro-cities by using panel analysis. In terms of convergency hypothesis test, the results show that both of the convergency hypothesis, the absolute vs. conditional hypothesis, reject the null hypothesis(H0) implying the labor productivity of the 16 province and metro-cities converged to the steady state equilibrium. Also, the speed of the absolute and conditional convergency for the 16 province and metro-cities are average 4.4% and 0.73% respectively. In addition, the results of the determinants of the labor productivity in manufacturing industry show that human capital and manufacturing location coefficient affect to the value- added per capita significantly, but government expenditure per capita doesn't affect to the value- added per capita. As for the total factor productivity, government expenditure per capita and fixed capital per capita are important factors, but research and development doesn't. Hence the government has to revise the balanced regional development policy to develop regional manufacturing industries for the vulnerable regions. Also, it requires more study regarding income disparities and productivity.

Consequentiality and Hypothetical Bias in Contingent Valuation Method: An Experimental Investigation (가상가치평가법에서의 결과수렴성과 가상편의)

  • While contingent valuation method (CVM) has been widely used for non-market valuations, it has been argued that it may suffer from hypothetical bias. However, if CVM respondents believe that their responses could affect the real consequence, the method could satisfy consequentiality. If a CVM satisfies a sufficiently high consequentiality, hypothetical bias could disappear as shown by some previous studies. In this study, we experimentally compare the willingness to pay (WTP) for donation of a relatively high consequentiality group with that of a relatively low consequentiality group for Korean university students. We find that both the existence probability and the size of hypothetical bias are lower for the high consequentiality group. This result implies that a CVM for a real policy including environmental policies could be free from hypothetical bias because its consequentiality would be relatively high, and warrants a future field study investigating the effect of consequentiality on hypothetical bias.

Has the Gap of Fiscal Self-sufficiency Rates of 16 Provincial Governments Been Narrowed? (우리나라 광역자치단체의 재정자립도 격차는 줄어들고 있는가)

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether the gap of fiscal self-sufficiency rates of 16 provincial governments in Korea has been narrowed and to suggest some remedies based on the empirical results. The panel data set from 1998 to 2013 is used and pooled OLS and system GMM regression techniques are employed. The fiscal self-sufficiency rates show downward trend and ${\beta}-convergence$ exists in absolute and conditional convergence analysis. The speed of conditional convergence anlysis is proved to be faster than that of absolute analysis. Both metropolitan cities and prefectures show convergence of fiscal self-sufficiency rates. We have found out that in the case of metropolitan cities, the proportion of workers in the tertiary industry has positive effect on fiscal self-sufficiency rates and in the case of prefectures number of cars per capita has positive effect. And in both cases increase in old population has negative effect.

화상복원에서 변형된 OSL 알고리즘에 대한 연구

  • EM 알고리즘은 통계적 화상복원에서 흔히 사용되는 방법이다. 특히 OSL 알고리즘은 다소 복잡한 형태의 페널티 함수가 주어지더라도 쉽게 반복 알고리즘을 유도할 수 있다는 장점을 갖는다. 그러나 이 알고리즘은 평활상수의 매우 제한된 영역에서만 수렴이 허용되어, 화상복원시 실험자의 경험의 폭을 상당히 제약하는 단점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 OSL 알고리즘을 변형하여, 수렴 허용영역이 확대된 평활상수를 갖는 알고리즘을 제시하고 그 수렴성질을 밝히며, 화상실험을 통해 제안된 알고리즘의 유용성을 밝힌다.

  • 본 논문에서는 구형 공동의 포텐셜 그린 함수를 효율적으로 계산할 수 있는 기법을 제시하였다. 일반적으로 매우 느리게 수렴하는 구형 공동 그린함수에 Ewald 합 기법을 적용함으로써 매우 빠르게 수렴하는 두 급수의 합으로 그린함수를 변환하였다. 그 결과 매우 적은 수의 계산항만 사용한 경우에도 충분히 수렴하는 정확한 결과를 얻을 수 있다.

  • 기존의 블라인드 등화(blind equalization) 알고리즘의 step-size는 임의의 값을 알고리즘에 적용하여 수렴속도와 정상 상태의 특성을 고려하여 최적한 step-size를 결정하였다. step-size를 크게 하면 수렴속도는 빠른 반면에 정상 상태에서 에러가 크고, step-size를 작게 하면 수렴속도는 느린 반면에 정상 상태에서 에러가 작아진다. 그렇기 때문에 수렴속도와 정상 상태를 고려해서 step-size를 결정해야 되고, 특별하게 정해지는 기준이 없기 때문에 연구자의 판단에 의해서 다르게 선택된다. 본 논문에서는 등화기 출력의 잔류 심벌간 간섭에 따라 step-size를 가변함으로서 수렴속도 및 정상 상태 성능을 개선한 가변 step-size를 갖는 블라인드 등화 알고리즘을 제안한다.

  • It has been realized that the results of circuit level simulation of neural networks, used for optimization problems, arc much different from those of algorism level simulation. In other words, the outputs converges asymptotically as time elapes, however, the input convergence depends on the value of parasitic conductance connected between input node and ground. Also, this conductance affects system performance. This paper discusses the influence of input conductance on the convergece of the continuous Hopfield neural networks. The convergence has been analyzed for the input and output nodes of neurons. Also, the characteristics of equilibrium points has been analyzed depending on different values of the input conductance.

  • This study concerns with partial sum of Fourier series, Fourier coefficients and the $L^1$-convergence of Fourier series. First, we introduce the $L^1$-convergence results. We consider equivalence relations of the partial sum of Fourier series from the early 20th century until the middle of. Second, we investigate the minor lineage of $L^1$-convergence theorem from W. H. Young to G. A. Fomin. Finally, we compare and reinterpret the $L^1$-convergence theorems.

Development of Alternative Algorithms to the Decoupled Load Flow (Decoupled Load Flow 알고리즘의 유연한 대안 알고리즘들의 개발에 관한 연구)

  • 본 논문에서 제안된 조류계산 알고리즘은 Jacobian의 off-diagonal 부 행렬을 완전히 무시하는 Decoupled Load Flow(DCL) 알고리즘들의 유연한 대안으로 반복(iteration)당 최소한의 추가 계산 부담으로 Jacobian의 off-diagonal 부분의 효과를 부분적으로 반영함에 의해 수렴 특성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 제안된 방법들은 특히 Fast Decoupled Load Flow(FDL)로 대표되는 DCL들의 수렴특성이 불안정해질 경우, 효과적으로 수렴특성을 향상시킬 수 있다. 제안된 알고리즘들은 Newton-Raphson Load Flow(NRL) 방법에서 Jacobian의 off-diagonal 부분의 효과를 점진적으로 제거하는 방법으로 유도하였고, 간략화 과정에서는 Neuman series expansion을 사용하였다. 실험결과 제안된 알고리즘들은 반복횟수와 전반적인 수렴 속도에서 확실한 성능향상을 보여주었다. 제안된 알고리즘들은 특히 DCL의 수렴성능이 문제가 있을 시 full NRL 대신에 적용할 수 있는 가능성이 있어 조류계산 시간을 단축해 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
