  • In recent years, there are some confusions related to the definition and existence of mountain ranges, which have been described in current geography text books. We contend that these confusions came from the lack of understanding on the geomorphological processes that form the mountain system in Korea. This research attempts to clarify the definition of mountain ranges and offer geological and geomorphological explanations about the formation of them. Based on the analyses of the social and cultural causes underlying the recent debates on the existence of mountain ranges, we tried to identify the relationships among the definition of mountain ranges, geological structure of Korea, and the forming processes of mountain ranges. The current and past mountain range maps were compared with geological structures, geological maps, surface curvature, and hill shade maps. The latter two maps were derived from a Digital Elevation Model of the Korean Peninsular. The results show that we are able to prove the existence of most mountain ranges, which provides a useful framework to understand the geological evolution of Korean peninsular and formation of mountainous landscape of Korea. In terms of their morphological continuity and genesis, however, we identified five different categories of mountain ranges: 1) Uplift mountain ranges(Hamkyeong Sanmaek, Nangrim Sanmaek, Taebaek Sanmaek), which were formed by the uplift processes of the Korean Peninsular during the Tertiary; 2) Falut mountain ranges(Macheonryeong Sanmaek, Sobaek Sanmaek, Buksubaek Sanmaek), whirh were directly related to the uplift processes of the Korean Peninsular during the Tertiary; 3) Trust mountain ranges(Jekyouryeong Sanmaek, Kwangju Sanmaek, Charyeong Sanmaek, Noryeong Sanmaek), which were formed by the intrusion of granite and consequent orogenic processes during the Mesozoic era; 4) Drainage divide type mountain ranges, which were formed by the erosion processes after the uplift of Korean Peninsular; 5) Cross-drainage basin type mountain ranges (Kangnam Sanmaek, Eunjin Sanmaek, Myelak sanmaek), which were also formed by the erosion processes, but the mountain ranges cross several drainage basins as connecting mountains laterally We believe that the current social confusions related to the existence of mountain ranges has partly been caused by the vague definition of mountain ranges and the diversity of the forming processes. In order to overcome theses confusions, it is necessary to characterize the types of them according the genesis, the purpose of usages and also the scale of maps which will explains the mountain systems. It is also necessary to provide appropriate educational materials to increase the general public's awareness and understanding of geomorphological processes.

  • BACKGROUND: Since bottom ash (BA) contains considerable amounts of CaO and MgO, it could be a useful amendment to increase soil pH and to immobilize cadmium (Cd). This study was conducted to evaluate effect of BA application in reducing Cd phytoavailability.METHODS AND RESULTS: Bottom ash was applied at the rate of 0, 20, 40, and 80 Mg/ha to Cd contaminated soil, and then lettuce was cultivated under field condition. soil pH and net negative charge increased slightly with increasing BA application; however, there was no statistical difference among the rates. Water soluble, exchangeable+acidic, reducible, and oxidizable fraction of Cd decreased with increasing bottom ash application rate, whereas residual fraction of Cd increased with increasing bottom ash application rate. Lettuce yield increased with rate of bottom ash up to 40 kg/ha. Visual evidences of cadmium toxicity and growth inhibition were not found during lettuce cultivation.CONCLUSION: Bottom ash was effective to reduce phytoextractability of Cd and to increase lettuce yield. Conclusively, BA could be a good soil amendment to reduce Cd phytoavailability in contaminated arable soil.

  • Objective: Facial asymmetry is usually evaluated from the difference in length and angulation of the maxilla and mandible. However, asymmetric position or shape of the condyle can also affect the expression of asymmetry. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between condylar asymmetry and chin point deviation in facial asymmetry. Methods: Cone-beam CT images of fifty adult skeletal Class III patients were studied. Thirty patients who had more than 4 mm menton deviation were categorized in the asymmetric group. Twenty patients with less than 4 mm menton deviation were assigned to the symmetric group. Anteroposterior and transverse condyle positions were evaluated from the cranial base. The greatest mediolateral diameter (GMD) of the condyle in the axial plane and angulation to the coronal plane were measured. The height and volume of the condyles were evaluated. Results: The symmetric group had no statistical difference between both condyles in position, angulation, GMD, height and volume. In the asymmetric group, the non-deviated side condyle was larger in GMD, height and volume than the deviated side. There was no statistical difference in condyle position and angulation. The GMD, height difference and condylar volume ratio (non-deviated/deviated) were positively correlated with chin deviation. From the linear regression analysis, condylar volume ratio was a significant factor affecting chin deviation. Conclusions: These findings suggests that the non-deviated side condyle is larger than the deviated side. In addition, condylar asymmetry can affect the expression of facial asymmetry.

  • The sustainability of Iris koreana, a rare and endemic plant designated by the Korea Forest Service, is threatened due to artificial factors such as habitats loss and climate change etc. and internal factors such as changes in biological properties of the habitats etc. but conservation biology research has not been performed in South Korea. The objective of this study is to establish the species conservation strategies by analyzing the characteristics of their habitats, including: 1) Population characteristics, and 2) habitat analysis of the vegetation and abiotic environments. From April to May, 2015, population characteristics [density (stems $m^{-2}$), flowering rate (%) and leaf area size ($cm^2$)] in I. koreana habitats such as Buan1~6 (BA1~6), Jangseong1~2 (JS1~2) and vegetation characteristics (phytosociological research and ordination analysis), and abiotic environments [soil temperature ($^{\circ}C$), soil humidity (%), transmitted light ($mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) and canopy openness (%)] were measured. I. koreana was mainly distributed at elevation 50 to 150 m and 2 to $11^{\circ}$ slope. Slope direction was shown as 90 to $193^{\circ}$. The average degree of canopy openness was 11.9%. It showed the highest at BA2 (17.5) and the lowest at JS1 (7.7). The average degree of transmitted light was $6.3mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$. It showed the highest at BA2 (10.1) and the lowest at JS1 (3.6). Population density showed average 25.8 (stems $m^{-2}$). It showed the highest at JS2 (19.7) and the lowest at JS1 (9.3). flowering stems showed average 16.9 (stems). It showed the highest at BA3 (35) and the lowest at BA5 (4). Leaf area size was average $94.1cm^2$.

They were located in Hyoja-Dong, Chunchon-Si [plot 1]; Sinnam-Myun, lnje-Gun [plot 2]; Buk-Myun, lnje-Gun [plot 3]; Seo-Myun, Yangyang-Gun [plot 4 and 5]; Sonyang-Myun, Yangyang-Gun [plot 6]; Toseong-Myun, Goseong-Gun [plot 7]; Synrim-Myun, Wonju-Si [plot 8]; Dunnae-Myun, Hoengsong-Gun [plot 9]; Jinbu-Myun, Pyungchang-Gun [plot 10]; Sogumgang, Kangneung-Si [plot 11]; Seo-Myun, Ulchin-Gun [plot 12]; and Mitan- Myun, Pyungchang-Gun [plot 13]. The morphological characteristics of needles and cones were investigated for twenty individual trees from each population. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Among needle characteristics, length, the number of serration. and the number of stoma row were significantly different among populations and between individuals within a population. They were 69.3~91.9mm, 25.1~28.7 per 0.5cm, and 4.1~6.2 rows for abaxial side and 2.9~4.6 rows for adaxial side, respectively. 2. Among cone characters surveyed. length and diameter were significantly different among populations and between individuals within a population. They were 31.1~43.7mm and 20.0~24.1mm, respectively. 3. A highly positive correlation was observed between the number of stoma row of abaxial side and that of adaxial side. and between length and diameter of cone. But the number of serration was negatively correlated with all traits. 4. The distance from seashore was positively correlated with needle length and the number of serration, but negatively correlated with the number of stoma row and cone length. However, the altitude was positively correlated with the number of serration, but negatively correlated with the number of stoma row and cone length. 5. Cluster analysis using average linkage method for needle and cone characteristics showed two groups to Euclidean distance 1.0. They were group I consisting of plots 1, 8, 12, and 13 and group II of plots 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11. However, group II was divided again to Euclidean distance 0.8, that is a group including plots 2, 3, 9, and 11 and the other group comprising plots 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the basic data in order to examine and perform the plan for activating the team teaching between industry-educational adjunct teachers and vocational teachers in technical high school. The research results are as follows. First, It is found that both teacher groups acknowledge the necessity of the team teaching, but vocational teachers are less likely to recognize the necessity than industry-educational adjunct teachers. Second, In the preparation of team teaching, both two groups of the teachers believe that the preliminary interchange and training between them are to be highly supportive for the activities expected to help teachers. Therefore, it is necessary to have opportunity of communication and narrow the difference of opinions between them by promoting the deep interest about applicable field and sharing the mutual idea between the teachers in the preparation of team teaching. Third, And the two groups recognize that the cooperation and joint establishment of design of team teaching and the individual process or joint progress of class activity are desirable for the proper design of team teaching. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the class environment for the interaction between teachers and students through not only the reciprocal activities between teachers but the interest class by systematically preparing the class design and role division clearly. Fourth, In the practice of team teaching, the two groups believe that the teaching activities can be usually divided and progressed, but it is desirable to work together in the related contents. The vocational teachers recognize that it is necessary to actively interact with students by connecting with the case of industry field. On the other side, industry-educational adjunct teachers think that the learning contents should be selected and organized according to the interests of students by associating with the case of industry field. Fifth, And two groups of teachers recognize that it is desirable to evaluate the grade by reflecting on the assessment by vocational teachers(50%), industry-educational adjunct teachers(50%).

  • This study was performed to identify the characteristics of the OFC1 gene (locus: chromosome 6p24.3) in Korean patients, which is assumed to be the major gene behind the nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate. The sample consisted of 80 subjects: 40 nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate patients (proband, 20 males and females, mean age 14.2 years); and 40 normal adults (20 males and 20 females, mean age 25.6 years). Using PCR-based assay, the OFC1 gene was amplified, sequenced, and then searched for similar protein structures. Results were as follows: 1. The OFC1 gene contains the microsatellite marker 'CA' repeats. The number of the reference 'CA' repeats was 21 times, and formed as TA(CA)11TA(CA)10. But, in Koreans, the number of tandem 'CA' repeats was varied from 17 to 26 except 18, and 'CA' repeats consisted of TA(CA)n. 2. Nine allelic variants were found. Distribution of the OFC1 allele was similar between the patients and control group. 3. There was a replacement of the base 'T' to 'C' after 11 tandem 'CA' repeats in Koreans compared with Weissenbach's report. However, the difference did not seem to be the ORF prediction results between Koreans and Weissenbach's report. 4. The BLAST search results showed the Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and the Nucleotide binding protein 2 (NBP2) as similar proteins. The TERT was a protein product by the hTERT gene in the locus 5p15.33 (NCBI Genome Annotation; NT023089) The NBP2 was a protein product by the ABCC3 (ATP-binding cassette, sub-family C) gene in the locus 17q22 (NCBI Genome Annotation; NT010783). 5. In the Pedant-Pro database analysis, the predictable protein structure of the OFC1 gene had at least one transmembrane region and one non-globular region.

  • For the purpose to verify the physicochemical properties of Korean waxy wheat, comparative analyses between waxy wheat lines and their respective maternal parents were performed on mixing and pasting properties, and flour particle sizes. The particle sizes of waxy wheat flour were significantly larger than those of their parents when milled in a same condition. Although the protein contents of flour in waxy wheat lines tested were high as much as those of bread wheat, the quality parameters showed lower baking uses based on sedimentation volumes and mixing characteristics. Waxy flour required more water than non-waxy flour to obtain the proper mixogram. Waxy wheat flour showed more or less higher onset pasting temperatures and much higher breakdown viscosities than their respective parent flour in the Rapid Viscograph test. Moreover, peak viscosity temperatures and final viscosities were dramatically reduced in waxy wheat lines by showing $79.4 - 81.7^{\circ}C$ and 101 116.9 RVU, respectively, compared to their parents in that the temperatures above $95^{\circ}C$ and the viscosity ranges of 148 -171.8 RVU.

  • Objective: Several ions and components are released from self-etching primers in the oral cavity. This may cause injury to the periodontal tissues throughout orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to assess the cytotoxicity of self-etching primers to HGF-1, HaCaT, and RHEK cells. Method: Transbond XT Primer (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA), and self-etching primers, Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray, Osaka, Japan), Transbond Plus SEP (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA), and Adper Prompt L-Pop (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA), were evaluated by MTT assay, and cellular changes were also observed. Results: In all cells after 72 hours with all primers, severe morphological changes such as atrophy and necrosis were observed. In the MTT assay using HGF-1, Clearfil SE Bond, Transbond XT Primer, Transbond Plus SEP, and Adper Prompt L-Pop were lined up in order of ascending cytotoxicity When using HaCaT, Clearfil SE Bond, Adper Prompt L-Pop, Transbond Plus SEP, and Transbond XT Primer were lined up in order of ascending cytotoxicity. When using RHEK, Clearfil SE Bond, Transbond XT Primer, Adper Prompt L-Pop, and Transbond Plus SEP were lined up in order of ascending cytotoxicity. Conclusion: The result of this study shows that care is needed because self-etching primers show cytotoxic properties similar to conventional primers.
