Classification and Identification of Korean Hand Shapes based on Anthropometric Hand Data Analysis (손 관련 인체측정자료를 이용한 한국인의 손 모양 유형 분류 및 특성 분석)

  • In this study, the representative hand shapes for the adult Koreans were analyzed by factor analysis and cluster analyses. The analyses were conducted on the anthropometric data of 58 hand dimensions from 325 subjects having nonhomogeneous demographics. Maximum hand circumference, first phalanx length of index finger, and ratio between the two measures were the independent variables for the cluster analyses. The results of the study showed that Korean hand shapes can be divided into 2 clusters irrespective of their size for each of the male and female group. There were slight differences in component ratio of hand shapes with respect to the occupation and the age, but their differences were not statistically significant. The representative Korean hand shapes and their anthrpometric dimensions could be used to design and establish proper sizing system for various hand operating devices.

  • The optimal blank design method by sensitivity analysis has been applied to the formings of oil-pan, tailored blank and front panel as the examples. Die geometry is prepared by a commercial CAD system. Excellent results has been obtained between the numerical results and the target contour shapes. Through the investigation, the proposed systematic method of optimal blank design is found to be effective in the practical forming processes.

  • This paper presents an augmented reality based modeling system that can provide pottery design experiences to the user. Augmented reality offers natural 3D interaction, a tangible interface, and integration into the real environment. In addition, six modeling techniques that mimics the hand movements in real world deformation process and an occlusion based interaction technique is provided for pottery modeling. The developed interface facilitates fast and intuitive pottery design. The AR pottery system can be used for pottery prototyping/design and educational purposes.

Implementation of Real-time Recognition System for Korean Sign Language (한글 수화의 실시간 인식 시스템의 구현)

  • In this paper, we propose recognition system which tracks the unmarked hand of a person performing sign language in complex background. First of all, we measure entropy for the difference image between continuous frames. Using a color information that is similar to a skin color in candidate region which has high value, we extract hand region only from background image. On the extracted hand region, we detect a contour and recognize sign language by applying improved centroidal profile method. In the experimental results for 6 kinds of sing language movement, unlike existing methods, we can stably recognize sign language in complex background and illumination changes without marker. Also, it shows the recognition rate with more than 95% for person and $90\sim100%$ for each movement at 15 frames/second.

  • This paper proposes a user interface for enhancing immersiveness and usability by combining hologram and haptic device with common Leap Motion. While Leap Motion delivers physical motion of user hand to control virtual environment, it is limited to handle virtual hands on screen and interact with virtual environment in one way. In our system, hologram is coupled with Leap Motion to improve user immersiveness by arranging real and virtual hands in the same place. Moreover, we provide a interaction prototype of sense by designing a haptic device to convey touch sense in virtual environment to user's hand.

Real-time Hand Region Detection and Tracking using Depth Information (깊이정보를 이용한 실시간 손 영역 검출 및 추적)

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time approach for detecting and tracking a hand region by analyzing depth images. We build a hand model in advance. The model has the shape information of a hand. The detecting process extracts out moving areas in an image, which are possibly caused by moving a hand in front of a camera. The moving areas can be identified by analyzing accumulated difference images and applying the region growing technique. The extracted moving areas are compared against a hand model to get justified as a hand region. The tracking process keeps the track of center points of hand regions of successive frames. For this purpose, it involves three steps. The first step is to determine a seed point that is the closest point to the center point of a previous frame. The second step is to perform region growing to form a candidate region of a hand. The third step is to determine the center point of a hand to be tracked. This point is searched by the mean-shift algorithm within a confined area whose size varies adaptively according to the depth information. To verify the effectiveness of our approach, we have evaluated the performance of our approach while changing the shape and position of a hand as well as the velocity of hand movement.

  • The external morphology of male and female of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) was studied using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three types of sensilla were identified on the funicle of antennae. The trichoid sensilla were most conspicious and distributed with a characteristic sharp structure at the apical end. Basiconic sensilla were showed distal curvature about $13{\mu}m$ long and $1.2{\mu}m$ to $1.4{\mu}m$ in diameter. Grooved sensilla were showed a finger-like projections at the peg apex. The function of these sensilla likely to be olfactory. The mouthparts were adapted for sucking food, and formed a elongate rostrum which was incorporated with labrum. The labrum was a small and flap-like shape. The slender and paired maxillary palp seemed to combine with each other lengthwise to long tube. The tarsus typically consisted of 5 segments, which might be variously modified, principally by thickening or flattening. The segment beared a pair of claws. Beneath the claws, there was a pair of pad-like pulvillia and a bristle-like median empodium. L. trifolii might secreted on the pulvillus and empodium an adhesive substance that enable them to cling to smooth surfaces. Male terminalia was complicated. The name 'aedeagus' seemed the best available general term for the copulatory organ, otherwise, female terminalia was usually relatively simple. This structure was reduced and formed a telescopic, eversible, and tubular ovipositor.

The Study on Dynamic Images Processing for Finger Languages (지화 인식을 위한 동영상 처리에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we realized a system that receives the dynamic images of finger languages, which is the method of intention transmission of the hearing disabled person, using the white and black CCD camera, and that recognizes the images and converts them to the editable text document. We use the afterimage to draw a sharp line between indistinct images and clear images from a series of inputted images, and get the character alphabet from the away of continuous images and output the accomplished character to the word editor by applying the automata theory. After the system removes the varied wrist part from the data of clean image, it gets the controid point of hand by the maximum circular movement method and recognizes the hand that is necessary to analyze the finger languages by applying the circular pattern vector algorithm. The system abstracts the characteristic vectors of the hand using the distance spectrum from the center of the hand and it compares the characteristic vector of inputted pattern from the standard pattern by applying the fuzzy inference and recognizes the movement of finger languages.

  • A naturalized species from Korean flora, Cymbalaria muralis P. Gaetrn. (Scrophulariaceae), is firstly recorded from a well-drained bare field at Bulgwang-dong, Eunpyong-gu, Seoul city. The genus Cymbalaria Hill has not recorded in Korea and C. muralis is easily distinguished from the other species of Scrophulariaceae by palmately-lobed leaves, vine-like stems and cylindrical spur at the base in its flower. The new Korean name is 'Deong-gul-he-ran-cho'. Descriptions, illustrations and photographs of this species are given.

A Development of the Next-generation Interface System Based on the Finger Gesture Recognizing in Use of Image Process Techniques (영상처리를 이용한 지화인식 기반의 차세대 인터페이스 시스템 개발)

  • This study aims to design and implement the finger gesture recognizing system that automatically recognizes finger gestures input through a camera and controls the computer. Common CCD cameras were redesigned as infrared light cameras to acquire the images. The recorded images go through the pre-process to find the hand features, the finger gestures are read accordingly, and an event takes place for the follow-up mouse controlling and presentation, and finally the way to control computers is suggested. The finger gesture recognizing system presented in this study has been verified as the next-generation interface to replace the mouse and keyboard for the future information-based units.
