The purpose of this study were to analyze high school girls’sex role identity and underwear purchasing behaviors, and to provide the educational guidelines for high school girls as a underwear comsumer and the fundamental data necessary for the products planning of underwear manufacturing companies. The questionnaire was composed of questions about the types of sex role identity, pursuit factors and purchasing behaviors of underwear. The respondents were girls from 6 high schools in cities in Chonbuk Province. The questionnaires were collected from April 6th to May 12th in 1998. 510 questionnaires were used for data analysis. Frequency, percent, average, standard deviation, F-test, $$\chi$^2$-test, and Duncan’s multiple range test were followed. The results of this study were as follows:1. Among the sex role identity groups, the androgynous group was the largest, and the masculine group was the smallest among high school girls. 2. High school girls sought after practicality most when purchasing underwears, but sought after the brand least. The androgynous group recognized practicality, aesthetics, and sexual attraction most, but the undifferentiated group recognized them least. 3. The high school girls bought underwears objectively when they were worn out, made use of TV, newspaper, and radio advertisements as the information sources, and considered the size, comfort, and style. They recognized the prices of underwears as moderate. They depended on their mother most when purchasing underwears and reflected their dependents opinion on selecting underwears partially. They purchased at the underwear specialty store.

Thus, as outwear has changed forming the characteristic mode in every period, underwear has changed endlessly, so that it may match the form and function of outwear, in accordance with the stream of period. In this study, this researcher examined hoop and petticoat which were used for widening the skirt which is female clothes with diverse names in every period. under one name which is farthingale, centering around the West and korea, from 16th century to 20th century(the first term). In addition, it examined by comparison the relevancy between to the history and change factor of underwear which was used for swelling the skirt in Korean clothes. The result to have studied on the history and change factor about the farthingale of West and Korea is as follows: This study found that the silhouette of women's clothing has a strong relationship with underwear. Also The result to compare the underskirt of the West with that of Korea is as follows : They has other character, but in 18th century, being compared the underskirt of the West with that of Korea, for the swelling of skirt, this study found that they had something in common with the underskirt of the West and Korea.
An underwear originated from when a human lost his purity and recognized his situation. But, it could not be sure when underwear and an outer garment were classified according to a function. An underwear has been used for a decorative and mental function, as well as a practical one. Also, it is the most fundamental medium to understand a human and a period. However, many studies on outer garments not an underwear have been done till now Therefore, this study was done to be arranged and analyzed materials scattered in order to give a correct understanding of an underwear as a clothes. The data were based on the existing fashion pamphlets, fashion magazines and other materials. The main results were as follows; Female's contemporary underwear was classified into Hosiery, Foundation and Lingerie. The Hosiery was again classified into chemise, combination, drawers and brief. The most typical hosiery was a chemise for a health and hygiene, and the drawers was adhered closely to a body. The Foundation which had a function to be well shaped was classified into Brassiere, Girdle, All in one, Body suit, Corset, Waist nipper and Garter belt. A typical contemporary foundation was a brassiere and a girdle. A brassiere had a role to support the breast up and A girdle compensate a hip area. The Lingerie which made body silhouette be vivid was classified into Slip, Panty, Wintum, Linge, Home lingerie, and so on. A slip, a panty and a lingo were typical lingeries. A slip made an outer garment be well-formed.
The purpose of this study were to compare the wearing and purchase practice of underwear items, and the attitudes toward underwear in middle school girls with those of their mothers in Chongju city. The questionnaires were to measure the demographic information, wearing and purchase practice of underwear items, and attitudes toward underwear. As statistical analysis, frequencies, $X^2-test$, and t-test were used. The results were as follows: 1. There were partially significant difference beween middle school girls and thier mothers of wearing and purchase practice of underwear. 2. The most important factor was size when they purchase their underwear. As the next important factor, middle school girls considered design, while their mother considered functional properties. 3. Middle school girls were more interested in the design aspect or brand name of underwear and less concerned about functional or practical aspects than their mothers in the attitudes toward underwear.
Gwa-du(裹肚), name of a garment, appears often from documentary records of Joseon Dynasty. It is assumed as one of the upper garments for men, and according to the record, it was worn as a set with Dan-ryung(團領), Dap-ho(搭胡), Chul-rik(帖裏), Han-sam(汗衫), pants and socks. After the Japanese Invasion of Korea in the 17th century, it changes to a shape of wrapping clothes with straps at four corners, and used to cover the stomach of a corpse like sash. From 16th-17th century, before the Japanese Invasion of Korea, the excavated costume shows a clothing which takes a role of Jegori, longer than Han-sam(汗衫) and shorter than Po(袍). In this study, this clothing is called Gwa-du(裹肚). This study examined the usage and shape of Kwa-du from some documentary records- "朝鮮王朝實錄-The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty", "禮書- Book of Manners", "宮中件記- Googjoonghalkee, recording court goods and commodities lists" and more with actual clothing. Kwa-du is presumed to have changed to men's Jegori So-chang-ui(小氅衣) after 17th century.
What human beings wear is closely related to how they conceptualize their bodies and how they classify the group they belong to and the way they wear their cloth s an important cultural element that shows wearers' awareness and social relationship. Especially, underclothes reflect unrevealed cultural inside of the society more abundantly than outer wear do. Through such characteristics of underclothes, we are able to better understand inherent order of culture. This study si to understand the characteristics and changes of Korean culture by reviewing the convention of underclothes wearing that takes important role in clothing without being explicitly revealed. For this study, in addition to biblical review of under clothes of traditional societies, a total of 301 college students aging from 19 to 28, who are the most open to accepting new cultures and changes, residing in Seoul area were participant. Questionnaire consists of open-ended questions of underclothes terms, kinds, why they wear, items of wearing, how they obtained, how they take care of, etc. In conclusion, changes in cultural meaning of underclothes analyzed through convention of underclothes wearing are as follows; 1) changes in wearing pattern implies changes in functions of underclothes and changes in members' roles and values in a society; 2) changes in recognition of underclothes are related to the changes in awareness of sex; 3) consumer behaviour of underclothes represents a part of information culture; 4) changes in the pattern of maintaining underclothes show that differentiation of sex role in household tasks is decreased.

The purpose of this study is to review, from the point of view that the advertisements are cultural system which transfers the life styles or value systems of a certain time, the expression styles by analyzing written clothing described in underwear advertisements of women's magazines targeting the women aged from twenties to forties, that advertisements are trying to represent. Accordingly, this study is intended to provide the underwear industry with useful information for implementing sales strategies by verifying the determining factors in selecting and wearing of underwear. The result of this study is as follows : First, the headlines of advertisements could be analyzed through merchandise, situation and consumers and were categorized by the fourteen different expression styles such as functionality, sense of beauty, tradition, future, family, exotic, globalization, environment, sensuality, youth, individuality, health, newness and top-class. Therefore, the advertisers choose and provide the various expression styles in order to maximize the delivering power of the underwear advertisements. Second, frequently used expression styles have been analyzed through frequency analysis of expression styles and, as a result, the important factors of choosing and wearing underwear have been verified. In addition, the fact that the ways of thinking of modern society and value systems are implied in the expression of underwear advertisements has been found.
This study intends to analyze the sex role stereotype that could be effective variable for conduction clothing behavior and clothing image preference, to find out the relationship between sex role stereotype and out/inner wear clothing behavior and clothing image preference of women, and to provide useful information for establishing marketing strategies of out/inner wear market. A total of 628 samples were selected from adult female in Seoul. Questionnaire was used as major method of gathering data. They were analyzed by SAS package. Main result of this study were follows: 1. In the relationship between clothing behavior and clothing image preference and demographic variables, four clothing-behaviores of out wear, and comfort and aesthetics of inner wear showed significant differences according to all of the demographic variables. 2. In the relationship between sex role stereotype and clothing behavior and clothing image preference, four types of sex role stereotype were showed significant differences in comfort, modesty, aesthetics and masculine-feminine image of out wear, and masculine-feminine image of inner wear. 3. In the consistency between out wear clothing behavior and clothing image preference, and inner wear clothing behavior and clothing image preference according to sex role stereotype, all cases except one showed no significant consistency.
The education status of the body make-up foundations for teenage girls was evaluated and their purchase & wearing behaviors and the level of satisfaction were studied to analyze the relationship between education level and wearing satisfaction. The research was conducted for 728 middle and high school girls in Seoul and Incheon area, by the questionnaire method. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS. Frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, $X^2$-test, t-test, and ANOVA were performed. Among various foundation education contents learned in home economics class, most students were aware of the kind of underwear, the fiber content & management methods, laundry methods, and the kind and function of foundations. While more than 80% of all respondents didn't know about the size of foundations. As a results, most of students realized the influence of foundation wearing on the human body, selection methods for brassiere and girdle according to form and age, and matters to be attended to wear brassiere and girdle. The education standard, practical use, and awareness degree on the side effects, and the need for foundation education were positively related each other. Therefore, it is very important to educate teenage girls in the fast growth period the right selection of foundation and its effect on body health, in order to provide normal growth and healthy body.
