  • In this study, two alternative models are developed and tested in order to investigate the relationship between retailer image and its private brand attitude. The halo effect model hypothesizes that retailer image is related as a halo in private brand evaluation and the summary construct model hypothesizes that retailer image functions as a summary construct of private brand evaluation. The results indicate there are moderating effects of 1) familiarity with a private brand and 2) the characteristics of a product category High familiarity is related with the summary construct model and low familiarity the halo effect model. In private brand food, the summary construct model fits better and explains more adequately that private brand evaluation influences retailer image as a summary construct. In private brand clothes, however, the halo effect model performs better in explaining the relationship between retailer image and private brand attitude.

  • A systematic brand value management starts from its measurement. Accordingly, a number of studies have proposed to measure the value of the brands. However, most of them deal with the brand value of the tangible products. Also, in many cases, such an effort did not bring long-lasting effects because either it ended up with an one-time measurement or it employed a different measurement method each time, thus hampering the comparability of the results and the accumulation of knowledge over time. So, this study has measured retail brand value index of the discount stores and the department stores of Korea every year between 2002 and 2004. And then it provides what they have found over that period. In addition this study examines the significant relationship between retail brand value components and the market performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial pattern of retail services and the consumer behaviors. For the purpose we select Jeju Island as the study area, because it retains relatively little distorted retail service systems by it's locational isolation. The retail service systems comprise three types: large-scale modern marts, conventional markets, and periodic markets. This study attempts to examine the interrelationships between these three different types, of retail services, and to figure out the spatial characteristics of consumer behaviors for each of them. We performed questionnaire surveys for getting the data of consumer behaviors. We applied several statistical methods to analyze the survey data. Most of retail services are located in two urban centers, Jeju City and Seoguipo City. We found that the locations of retail services are determined strongly by population size. The selection of market type and the location to go for shopping are related strongly with the types of goods. However, there is a wide difference in the consumer behaviors according to the consumer's socio-economic characteristics. Young wives tend to go shopping to large-scale marts in Jeju City which is the higher level central place, while old wives go shopping to conventional markets and periodic markets. They also show different shopping behaviors according to the household income levels. Low income groups prefer to go conventional markets located near to their residence, middle income groups go to large-scale marts in Jeju, and high income group go out of the Jeju Island. However, the consumer behavior does not show big difference according to the size of family. There are also no difference in the selection for shopping location according to the consumer's resident locations.

  • This study identified types of information source, and explored a path model for consumer information search by shopping attributes in the context of online decision making. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires during regularly scheduled classes. A total of 219 usable questionnaires were obtained from respondents who enroll at universities in the southwestern region of the United States. For data analysis, factor analysis and path model estimation were used. Consumer information source was classified into three types for online clothing purchases: Online source, Offline retail source, and Mass media. Consumers were more likely to rely on offline retail source for online clothing purchases, than other sources. In consumer information search by shopping attributes, online sources were more likely to be related to transaction-related attributes(e.g., incentive service), whereas offline retail source(e.g., displays in stores, manufacturer's catalogs and pamphlets) were more likely to be related to product and market related attributes(e.g., aesthetics, price) when purchasing clothing online. Also, the path model emphasizes the effect of shopping attributes on traditional retailer search behavior, leading to online purchase intention for clothing. This study supports consumer information search by attributes, and discusses a managerial implication of multi-channel retailing for apparel.

  • With the advent of the various device types and marketing communication, customer's search and purchase behavior have become more complex and segmented. However, extant research on multichannel marketing effects of the purchase funnel has not reflected the specific features of device User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX). In this study, we analyzed the marketing channel effects of multi-device shoppers using a unique click stream dataset from global online retailers. We examined device types that activate online shopping and compared the differences between marketing channels that promote visits. In addition, we estimated the direct and indirect effects on visits and purchase revenue through customer's accumulated experience and channel conversions. The findings indicate that the same customer selects a different marketing channel according to the device selection. These results can help retailers gain a better understanding of customers' decision-making process in multi-marketing channel environment and devise the optimal strategy taking into account various device types. Our empirical analyses yield business implications based on the significant results from global big data analytics and contribute academically meaningful theoretical framework using an economic model. We also provide strategic insights attributed to the practical value of an online marketing manager.

  • Trade areas of the commercial centers in Chongiu City are rapidly changing as the urban spacial structure is transformed, consumer behaviors are changed and large shopping stores are located in the area. The City's CBD has been in the Sung-an-gil district. The trade areas of the CBD have expanded along the major roads in the directions of north, south and west from the Sang-dang park. Especially, two newly formed secondary commercial centers are noticeable: one is the center around the express bus terminal in Gagyong-dong, and the other is formed in the Yongam, Bunpyong and Sannam district. As such changes are intensified, small retailers in the traditional markets that are mainly concentrated in the Yukgerri market place have faced hardship in business and management. The commercial hardship has been hastened up by openings of large discount stores and expanding tendency of internet shopping businesses. Acknowledging the changes in the business environment of traditional markets, this paper attempts to suggest policies to gentrificate the declining market areas in the CBD. The suggested polices are differentiated according to the types of traditional markets, stores. and merchants. And also suggestion is provided regarding amendments of the City's codes.

  • The major objectives of this study are twofold. The first is to discover which in-store tactics influence store performance when a retailer implements category management in variety enhancer and fill-ins categories. The second is to analyze how and why specific in-store tactics achieve better or worse performance than other in-store tactics across categories. The data were collected using scanner data and direct observations in 'A' discount store which is one of the representative discount stores in Korea. The in-store tactics were measured by product assortment, temporary price discount, price and non-price promotion, and shelving. The store performance was measured by sales and gross margin return on inventory investmant(GMROI). Empirical results analyzed by multiple regression were as follows: In variety enhancer category, the significant factors affecting sales were product assortment, temporary price discount, price promotion, and shelving. Non-price promotion also influenced GMROI positively but product assortment impacted on GMROI negatively. In fill-ins category, the significant factors affecting sales and GMROI were product assortment and shelving. However, the other factors such as temporary price discount, price promotion, and non-price promotion had no significant influence on both sales and GMROI. This paper presents a number of theoretical and managerial implications of the empirical results and concludes by addressing limitations and future research directions.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine a relationship between the headquarters and the sales offices of a car manufacturing company by comparing their channel types. It examines how the level of communication and commitment of sales offices on their headquarters differently affects some mediating effects between participation and relationship performance. It also tries to find out what kind of mechanisms are needed in order to improve the relationship. Through the data analysis of a total of 200 sales offices which are directly managed stores and agency stores by a domestic car manufacturing company, the following conclusions were reached: Participation, one of the variables in bureaucratic structuring, influences all dimensions of communication. Also, it has found that communication dimensions influence commitment dimensions differently by the type of channels, and commitment dimensions influence relationship performance by the type of channels. Recently, import car makers are accelerating their moves in the domestic market, and the importance of a customer-oriented retail innovation and a relationship management in an auto manufacturing industry is increasing. This study will give an useful suggestion on how to improve a long term relationship of distributors through an enhancement of communication and commitment.

  • We aim to explore how the COVID-19 affects commercial sales of traditional market in Seoul. We obtain data for commercial sales and several spatial variables that are related to commercial sales from the Seoul Open Data Plaza. In order to estimate the effect of COVID-19 occurrence on commercial sales, we employ fixed-effect panel data analysis models. Unlike our expectation, the empirical results show that the effect of the COVID-19 on commercial sales of traditional market is not significant. However, we found that the effects are significant in some types of businesses when we did the same analyses with subsamples. For example, service sectors are mostly negatively affected by COVID-19, and retail sectors are also second mostly affected by COVID-19. However, there is no significant relationship between COVID-19 and restaurant sectors. In addition, these effects vary by size of traditional market. Our results suggest that government should have a plan to help small businesses in traditional market because they do not have sufficient abilities to adjust to the unexpected economic shock, like COVID-19. Findings also suggest that strategies for helping them should be differentiated by business type and market size.
