Expression of EGFR on the Rat Gingival Epithelia During the Experimental Tooth Movement (실험적 치아이동시 백서 치은 상피의 표피성장인자 수용체의 발현)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the change of the EGFR mRNA expression in the rat gingival epithelium by the experimental tooth movement. We applied reciprocal force between the upper anterior teeth using NiTi open coil spring and stainless steel wire for 1, 2 3, 7 days. For the detection of EGFR mRNA, in situ hybridization was done in the tissue samples which were taken from the pressure and tension sides of teeth. The results were as follows ; 1. The expression of EGFR mRNA was increased application-time dependently. a. Day 1 mild expression on the basal and spinous cell layers b. Day 2 . moderate expression on the whole layers c. Day 3 : severe expression on the basal and spinous cell layers 4. Day 7 severe expression on the whole layers 2. The expression level of EGFR mRNA in the pressure and tension sides were similar during the whole Period of experiment except seven day application at which the cornified layer of the tension side showed moderate expression. 3. Removal of the appliance after 7-day force application lowered the level of EGRF mRNA expression. It was returned to the mild and control (rare) level at three and seven days after the removal, respectively. In conclusion, EFGR mRNA was increased by the experimental tooth movement on the rat ginigval epithelium. Up-regulation of EGFR mRNA in the gingival epithelium can be regarded as responses to the possible changes caused by the physical stersses to the oral environment to maintain the homeostatic conditions of the periodontium.

  • Ganglioneuroma is a well-differentiated, benign tumor of the sympathetic nervous system. These tumors belong to a family of neoplasm that exhibit a wide range of differentiation, with neuroblastoma at one end and ganglioneuroma at the other. Because it share morphologic features with other both benign and malignant neural tumors, accurate preoperative diagnosis is often difficult. Nonetheless, it is critical for proper management. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of the ganglioneuroma has been a little documented. We describe a case of mediastinal ganglioneuroma in a 33-month-old girl. The diagnosis was suggested on FNAC and was confirmed by histopathologic examination later.

  • The mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare tumor in the lung for less than 1% of all pulmonary neoplasm. It is mostly presented as a solitary pulmonary nodule at a large bronchial tree on bronchoscope. But more peripheral located tumor that not accessible to the bronchoscope are rarely reported on literature. The cytologic findings of these tumors are discribed as a mixture of squamous cells, mucous cells, and intermediate cells with overlapped cellular clusters. We experienced a case of peripheral mucoepidermoid carcinoma of lung diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The smear showed many cellular clusters on mucoid background. They consisted of many intermediate cells with occasional mucus-secreting cells, but malignant squamous cells were not present.

  • Extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a relatively rare tumor and its cytologic findings have rarely been reported. We experienced a case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of soft tissue of the right lateral neck diagnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy in a 59 year-old man. Cytologic findings showed two cell components. One was an undifferentiated, small cell component with moderate amount of cytoplasm and spindle nuclei. The second population was a chondroid component. These cytologic findings were diagnostic to mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.

  • The application of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology to the soft tissue tumors had been neglected. In recent years, however, FNA has been used increasingly in the preoperative diagnosis of these tumors due to its usefulness and accuracy. We present 3 cases of liposarcoma, myxoid, myxoid with round cell, and pleomorphic, diagnosed by FNA cytology with histologic confirmation. Good correlation between histologic and FNA cytologic findings was found. Although the cytologic appearances of liposarcomas varied with histologic type, the main criterion was the presence of atypical multivacuolated lipoblast with characteristically scalloped nuclei.

  • In a six-year period (1988. 5-1994. 4), fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC) of 322 pulmonary lesions from 296 patients were performed at Soonchunhyang University Hospital. Of these 322, malignancy was diagnosed cytologically in 139(43.2%), suspicious malignancy in 7(2.2%), negative in 164(50.8%), and insufficient material in 12(3.8%). Malignant lesions consisted of 54 cases of adenocarcinoma, 50 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 18 cases of small cell carcinoma. They were verified by histologic examination in 70 cases. There were 2(0.6%) false positive cases due to florid bronchoalveolar hyperplasia and atypical bronchial epithelial cells associated with granulomatous lesion. The overall accuracy rate was 90%, the sensitivity 84.3% and the specificity 94.7%.

  • Most common metastatic tumors of the thyroid gland are squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck region, adenocarcinoma of breast and lung, malignant melanoma, and renal cell carcinoma of kidney in order of frequency. Metastasis from gastrointestinal tract to the thyroid gland rarely occurs. We experienced a case of fine needle aspiraton cytology of metastatic adenocarcinoma of both thyroid glands from the colon. Cytologic smears showed picket-fence like arrangement of nuclei of carcinoma cells and syncytial type of tissue fragments with acinar pattern on necrotic or mucoid background.

  • 과실의 연화는 주로 조직의 세포벽의 구조적 붕괴에 기인하며 이 중 Pectin의 분해와 밀접한 관련이 있다고 한다. 과실의 세포벽에는 다량의 $Ca^{2+}$이 존재하면서 세포벽의 구조를 지지하는데 중요한 역할을 하고있다. 양액 재배시에는 배양액의 농도가 높을수록 $Ca^{2+}$ 흡수이동이 억제되어 토마토식물체의 $Ca^{2+}$ 함량은 감소하는 것으로 보고되었다. 본 실험은 $Ca^{2+}$을 이용한 토마토과실의 품질향상을 위한 연구의 기초자료를 얻고자 토마토 유식물체에 $Ca^{2+}$ 농도별, 종류별 처리를 통하여 토마토 육묘중 $Ca^{2+}$ 및 다른 양이온의 흡수 유형을 알아보고자 하였다.   • The activities of $\beta$-glucosidase, $\beta$-glucuronidase and N-acetyl-$\beta$-glucosaminidase were measured to investigate the relationships of them to sexual maturity. Peritoneal injections of testosterone and dibutyryl cAMP to rats were carried out. As a result, the activities of $\beta$-glucosidase and N-acetyl-$\beta$-glucosaminidase were significantly decreased from the third day and that of P -glucurondiase on the seventh day in the castrated groups. In addition, ihe activities of these three enzymes were significantly increased in the testosterone treated groups for 7 days. In case of dbcAMP injection, the activities of these three enzymes were similar to those of castrated groups or had a tendency to be decreased. On electron microscopic examination, principal cells, basal cells and narrow cells were observed in all regions of epididymis. Principal cells were general forms of columnar epithelial cells. Narrow cells had a number of small vesicles and light cells showed low electron density in comparison to other epithelial cells in cauda epididymis. Halo cells were migrating leucocytes btween epithelial cells.

Effect of Soluble EPCR on the Anti-Inflammatory Effects by Activated Protein C (수용성 EPCR에 의한 활성화된 단백질 C의 항염증 작용에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we evaluated the effect of soluble EPCR(Soluble Endothelial Protein C Receptor, sEPCR) on the anti-inflammatory activities by activated protein C(APC) in endothelium. We demonstrated that sEPCR inhibited the barrier protective activity, the inhibition of neutrophils adhesion toward endothelial cells and the inhibition of transendothelial migration by APC in endothelial cells. Interestingly, sEPCR also blocked the mechanism by which APC inhibited the expression of cell adhesion molecules(CAM) by TNF-alpha in endothelial cells. These results suggested that the anti-inflammatory activities of APC was inhibited by sEPCR which blocked the binding motifs of Gla domain of APC to membrane bound EPCR. This finding will provide the important evidence in the development of new medicine for the treatment of severe sepsis and inflammatory diseases and good clue for understanding unknown mechanisms by which APC showed the anti-inflammatory activities in endothelium.
