  • We provided diagnostic characters of the adult and larval stages of two co-inhabiting species of ephemerid burrowing mayflies, Ephemera orientalis and E. sachalinensis (new record to South Korea) (Ephemeroptera: Ephemeridae), in Korean streams. E. sachalinensis (mean${\pm}$sd body length male adult 18.44${\pm}$0.70 mm, female adult 21.46${\pm}$0.45 mm) is larger in body length than E. orientalis (male adult 13.92${\pm}$0.04 mm, female adult 15.27 ${\pm}$ 0.48 mm), and can be distinguished by male genitalia, forewing markings, and stripes on the abdominal terga Vl-lX. The mature larvae of E. sachalinensis differ from those of E. orientalis in having a deeper and more divergent head frontal process. Their body size distributions and additional ecolegical findings are discussed.

  • Psylla pyricola population from Suwon($37^{\circ}$16' N) begins to enter diapause by exposure to a photoperiod of 14hr light. Over 93% of adults were induced to enter diapause when exposed to 13hr loght period, and at 18 and $25^{\circ}C$, the critical photoperiod was not influenced. When the photoperiod was switched during the nymphal stage from 16L to 10L, no morph change was occurred in the 4th and 5th instars. Average number of eggs laid per female was 486.2 in winter form adult and 387.2 in summer form adults, and average oviposition periods were 34 and 24 days, respectively.

  • In order to investigate an endocrinological effect on metamorposis of the midgut in silkworm, Bombyx mori, 20-hydroxyecdysone and rude extract of brain (PTTH) were injected into pupal isolated abdomens, devoid of prothoracic glands and also in the brainless diapausing pupae with the prothoracic glands (so-called dauer pupae). When ecdysone was assayed abdomens, drastic morphological changes occurred in the midgut. The wet weights of midguts were found decrease as like the normal pupae at metamorphosis. Proteineous changes in epithelial midgut were also observed; pupal specific proteins (PSP) vanished while the adult proteins were newly synthesized. Similar results were also found in the changes of protein in the midgut of dauer pupae by injecting ecdysone and PTTH.

  • Morphological characteristics and life cycle of Parnara guttata were studied from 2001 to 2002. Egg was hemisphere-shaped in pink. Larva was milky white or yellowish green color with 2.9-30.6 nm body length, depending on their developmental stages from 1 st to 5th instar. Pupa were grayish brown from 23.8 to 25.7 nm length, adults were yellowish brown color and body lengths were 17.4 nm and 16.2 nm and wing expanse lengths were 35.2 nm and 30.6 nm with female and male, respectively. At 25${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$, each developmental periods was 4.5, 30.2, and 6.9 days with egg, larvae, and pupae, respectively. Also adult longevity were 10.1 for female, average number of egg was 205.5.

  • Metacercariae of the genus Stictodora encysted in the head tissue of Acanthogobius navimanus (the gobies) caught at Sachun-gun, Kyongnam Province, were identified to be Stictodora Zari Yamaguti, 1939 (Trematoda: Heterophyidae), a new parasite fauna in Korea. The metacercariae were 0.39∼,0.43 mm by 0.32∼0.35 mm in size, long elliptical, and with a thin and transparent cyst wall. Total 200 metacercariae were collected from 50 gobies. In order to obtain adult worms two kittens and a Puppy were infected each with 34∼100 metacercariae, and total 33 adults were recovered between the day 4 and day 8 post-infection. The S. sari adults measured 0.95∼1.18 mm long and 0.26∼0.32 mm wide and the eggs in uteri 0.028∼0.033 mm by 0.017∼0.020 mm. The most characteristic morphological feature of these flukes was the presence of a gonotyl and gonotyl spines arranged in two groups; densely crowded group of 30~40 spines and linearly-arranged one of 30∼40 spines, together of which made a comma(or reversed comma) shape along the lateral margin of the gonotyl. It has been proved by this study that 5. sari is distributed in southern coasts of Korea.

  • Ecological Characteristic of Glyphodes perspectalis was investigated in laboratory and field condition. Larvae of Glyphodes perspectalis had 6 instars, and color of head and body was black and yellowish green, respectively. Larval periods were 24 days. Egg was flat and round. Color of egg was transparent at an early stage, and became milky later. Color of pupa was yellowish green and became dark brown later. Pupal periods were 10.5 days. Adult of Glyphodes perspectalis emerged twice a year. First emergency was from early June to late June, and second from middle August to early September.

  • The walnut leaf beetle, Gastrolina depressa, belongs to family Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera), and is one of the major pests of walnut trees. G. depressa eggs were oval and dark orange. The three G. depressa larval instars were gray in color. The larval period was approx. 8.14 days ($24^{\circ}C$, 16L:8D). Adults of both sexes were dark blue, and females were larger than males. Overwintered adults emerged in late April, and laid eggs in clusters on young leaves of the host tree. Mature 3rd instar larvae pupated after a short prepupal period. Adults emerged starting mid-May and entered into diapause shortly afterward.

  • This study was performed to investigate the bionomical characteristics of Protaetia brevitarsis in Korea. The imaginal stage was from in early July and the advent of imagoes was the most frequent in early August. Also few imagoes was entered into the hibernation. The larvae inhibited in humus and the period of larva was all completed in late November. At the stage of the third larva, the larvae entered into the hibernation. The average number of laid eggs was 152, and all periods of each stage - eggs, first, second, third instar larvae and pupa - were shortened in $30^{\circ}C$ than in $25^{\circ}C$. As for the longevity of imagoes, female, reared in individual and in low temperature lived longer than male, in group and in high temperature, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the life history of Paralebeda plagifera femorata in 1998 and 1999. Ginkgo biloba was newly known to be a host plant for the species in this study. The moth has one generation a year. It overwinted as 6th instar larva on branches of the host plant. The 9th instar larva made a rough cocoon by webbing two or three leaves, and pupated on the branch on late June. The moths emerged from early July through early August with a peak around late July. A female oviposited 205 eggs on an average on the branch, twig, or leaf margin.

  • Acrolepiopsis nagaimo (Yasuda, 2000) belonging to the family Acrolepiidae (Lepidoptera) is newly reported from Korea. The species was first collected at Gimcheon-si in 2003 and later they were found to infest Chinese yam, Dioscorea batatas at a Chinese yam experimental field of the Institute for Bioresources Research located at Andong in 2008. Diagnostic characteristics of the adult are described and photographs of adult and male and female genitalia are provided.
