  • The present study investigated the relationship among the level of family differentiation, quality of family relationship, and intimacy with their partners in 381 adult children. First, this study examined the relationship between the level of family differentiation and quality of family relationship. The result showed that the level of family differentiation was positively and significantly correlated to quality of family relationship. This finding indicated that family differentiation may be used for an objective and useful index to measure the dynamics of emotional system and the level of family-of-origin emotional health. Second, the influence of the family of origin was studied through exploring the relationship between the level of differentiation of family of origin, and adult children's intimacy with their partners. It was found that the family differentiation level was positively and significantly related to adult children's intimacy with their partners at each subsystem, but family differentiation levels of parents more influenced on adult male's intimacy than on adult female's intimacy with their partners.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how previous grandmaternal child care affects contacts between older mothers and their adult children. This study especially focused on intergenerational long-term reciprocity relationships. In this study, data from the first wave (in 2006) to the forth wave (in 2012) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing yielded a sample of 1,925 elderly mothers and 7,460 adult children. This study employed multi-level analyses considering hierarchical structures between the mothers and their adult children. In this study, past grandmaternal child care was measured by providing care behavior and unit of time for care. Intergenerational contacts was measured by frequency of face-to-face and non-face-to-face contacts. The results showed that adult children who previously received child care from their mothers were more likely to contact to their mothers. Additionally, the increasing amount of time for elderly mothers to provide care to their grandchildren led to more frequent contacts between elderly mothers and their adult children. The findings proved that grandmaternal child care was in important position in reciprocal relationships between elderly mothers and their adult children. Through these results, this study suggested theoretical, policy, and practical implications.

  • This study examined how previous financial and time transfers from mothers to their adult children affect co-residence of elderly mothers and their adult children in South Korea. This study employed multi-level logistic analysis considering hierarchical relationship structures between mothers and their adult children. A sample of 1,925 elderly mothers and 7,460 adult children was extracted from data which were from the first wave (in 2006) to the forth wave (in 2012) of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA). The result of the analysis suggested that past financial transfer from mothers to their adult children was not significantly associated with co-residence between elderly mothers and their adult children. However, likelihood of co-residence increased with the amount of time transfer, which was measured by unit of time for elderly mothers' caring for their grandchildren. This study discussed that long-term reciprocal relationships between elderly mothers and their adult children are built by intergenerational support relationships. However, the result that showed only grandmaternal child care affected intergenerational co-residence implies that intergenerational care may play an important role in intergenerational reciprocal relationships. Through these findings, this study suggested theoretical, practical, and policy implications.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the ambivalence of adult children to their elderly parents. 410 adult children who married and having alive mother or father were included. First, direct measurement for asking ambivalence was developed and the relationship between direct and indirect measurements of ambivalence was tested. Next, the influences of parental, children, and relational characteristics on ambivalence were examined. Nine items were selected as direct measurement of ambivalence through the exploratory factor analysis and item response theory. The relationship between direct measure and indirect measure was from .543(p<.000) to r=.625(p<.000) based on gender and generation. The effects of indirect ambivalence on conflict was bigger than direct one for both sons and daughters and the influences of direct measurement on intimacy and relational satisfaction were bigger than indirect one. In case of sons, caregiving obligation was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and value differences was on ambivalence for fathers. For daughters, age of self was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and age of fathers was the one for fathers. These results were discussed on the meanings of ambivalence for elderly mothers and fathers in Korea comparing with Chinese and Western cultures.

  • Recently increasing young adults have experienced serious economic difficulties in their transition to adulthood and so a great deal of parents have to help their children financially even well after children finish their schools. Utilizing the 2008 Social Survey, a nationwide representative survey collected by the Statistics Korea, this paper examines how children, mothers, and fathers think about parental support to adult children. Respondents of the 2008 Social Survey answer how much parents support economically to their children about the following four items: college education, graduation school education, spending money while searching for jobs, and marital preparation. Analyzing a sample of 1,727 high school students and their parents, I find that the three family members generally accept economic support to the above items as part of parental duties. Also comparisons of the three family members' attitudes indicate that they usually reach the consensus about the dutiful scope of parental support to adult children. Logistic regressions reveal that male teens and children with conservatism are more likely to believe in wider scope of parental economic duties. And parents who are on good terms with children and are high in educational and occupational levels are more willing to support adult children. I conclude with implications of the findings for intergenerational relationships.

  • The authors aimed to identify the patterns of mutual support between aged parents and their adult offsprings and to analyze the demographic and social characteristics of each pattern and the quality of living for the aged parents. The data of the study were drawn from the 2008 Survey of the Living Conditions and Welfare for the Elderly published by the Ministry of the Health and Welfare. The sample of our analysis was 14,843 aged persons with their adult offsprings. A cluster analysis produced four types of mutual support patterns: High mutual supporters, parents as beneficiaries, parents as benefactors, ans low mutual supporters, with parents as benefactors as the most frequent pattern of mutual support. The study showed that the group of high mutual supporters was highest in the quality of life while the group of parents as beneficiaries lowest. This findings imply that the support relationship between old people and their adult offsprings may undergo transformation towards a two-way relation of mutual support.
