  • In this study, the principal components of rainfall in Korea are extracted by a method which consists of the independent component analysis combined with the wavelet transform, to examine the spatial correlation between seasonal rainfalls and global sea surface temperatures (SSTs). The 2-8 year band retains a strong wavelet power spectrum and the low frequency characteristics are shown by the wavelet analysis. The independent component analysis is performed by using the Scale Average Wavelet Power(SAWP) that is estimated by wavelet analysis. Interannual-interdecadal variation is the dominant variation, and an increasing trend is observed in the spring and summer seasons. The relationships between principal components of rainfall in the spring/summer seasons and SSTs existed in Indian and Pacific Oceans. Particularly, the SST zones, which represent a statistically significant correlation are located in the Philippine offshore and Australia offshore. Also, the three month leading SSTs in the same region we strongly correlated with the rainfall. Hence, these results propose a promising possibility of seasonal rainfall prediction by SST predictors.

  • In this study, a salt water immersion test was performed on concrete specimens simulating the concrete mix design of the nuclear power plant, and the correlation between the amount of chloride and the XRF component according to the depth of the concrete was analyzed. The amount of chloride on the surface of the nuclear power plant concrete increased slightly with increasing immersion time in salt water, but the amount of chloride in the depth of 5.5 mm or more showed a clear tendency to increase with increasing immersion time in salt water. As a result of analyzing the correlation between the amount of chloride in concrete and the XRF component, the concrete with 20% FA substitution compared with the OPC concrete showed a very high correlation between the composition ratio of Cl ions and the evaluation result of salt damage resistance by XRF component analysis. Accordingly, it was confirmed that chlorine ion analysis and salt damage resistance performance evaluation by XRF component analysis were possible through repeated data accumulation in the nuclear power plant concrete mix with 20% fly ash replacement.

  • To evaluate the possibility of predicting a specific nutrient component, which nay be difficult in analysis, from a component of nutrient relatively easy to analyze, six grass roughage sources (bermuda grass hay, klein grass hay, oat hay, orchard grass straw, tall fescue straw and timothy hay) mainly used in Korea were analyzed for the heat-stable $\alpha-amylase$ treated neutral detergent fiber (aNDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), neutral detergent insoluble crude protein (NDICP) and acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP) as well as proximate analytical components, and correlation coefficients between nutrient components were calculated. Some chemical components appeared to have significant correlation (p<0.05) through Pearson's correlation coefficients (i.e. between crude protein (CP) and NDICP in oat hay, orchard grass straw and tall fescue, between CP and ADICP in oat hay and timothy hay, between crude fiber (CF) and aNDF in klein grass hay, tall fescue straw and timothy hay, between CF and ADF in oat hay, tall fescue straw and timothy hay, and between CF and ADL in orchard pass straw and timothy hay). It is therefore suggested that it would be worthy to predict a specific nutrient component, which may be difficult in analysis such as aNDF, ADF, ADL, NDICP and ADICP, from a component of nutrient relatively easy to analyze such as CP and CF. However, it would be needed to improve the correlation coefficients, more samples should be measured.

  • Ginsengs grown fur six years at different locations were harvested and prepared for white and red ginsengs. These fresh, white, red, and other ginsengs purchased from domestic and foreign countries were analyzed for their volatile compounds by solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography (SPME-GC) and SPME-GC/mass spectrometery (MS). The intensity of the ginseng volatiles perceived by nose was also measured in order to correlate the intensity with the corresponding GC analysis. Good correlations were obtained between the GC peak area and the degree of intensity evaluated by sensory panelists, indication that a reliable and objective evaluation of the aroma intensity of ginsengs by a simple GC analysis is possible.

  • Effects of adding 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8% freeze-dried kimchi powder (FDKP) on kimchi snack quality were examined. Headspace volatile compounds of 4% FDKP snack, receiving highest overall preference in sensory evaluation results, were analyzed, and 26 compounds were identified, including 13 aldehydes, 3 sulfides, a ketone, an acid, a terpene, and 7 other compounds. Pearson correlation analyses were carried out to determine a correlation between the concentration of FDKP and the amount of each volatile compound. Acetaldehyde, propanal, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, acetic acid, and d-limonene showed correlation coefficients above 0.90; selective ion move (SIM) analysis also showed above 0.97 for highly correlated compounds. Results suggest that these compounds can be used as indicators fur kimchi flavor of FDKP snack.
