  • This paper investigates the relationship between the occupational gender wage gap and the proportion of high wage earning female workers in Korea. The main idea is that an increase in the number of high wage earning female workers in the workplace could lead to a decrease in the gender wage gap by eradicating the prejudice or reducing the statistical discrimination on female workers. We constructed a panel dataset by using the raw data from the Korean Survey Report on Labor Conditions by Employment between 2009 and 2016. The result shows that greater presences of high wage earning female workers in male dominant occupations have statistically significant negative impacts on residual gender earning dispersion.

  • This study examined effects of self-esteem, life satisfaction and gender on the sign needs which included self-presentation(presenting true-self and ideal-self) and social interaction (feeling connected and gaining approval) for Facebook use. Due to the significant interaction effects of gender, further statistical analyses were conducted. While there were negative relationships between self-esteem and self-presentation for male respondents, there were positive relationships between self-esteem and social interaction for female respondents. In addition, there were positive relationships between life-satisfaction and self-presentation for male respondents, but there was the only positive relationship between life satisfaction and presenting true-self for female respondents. Based on the study results, the study implications, limitations and future study were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between gender, gift recipient, and group identity by product category of Korean consumers. 672 usable questionnaires from South Korea completed a self- administered survey with a five-point Likert scale. This questionnaire evaluated the perceived importance of group identity when buying apparel and electronics as a gift for kin, nonkin, and co-workers. The interaction between gender, gift recipient, and group identity were statistically significant. The results suggest that the importance of group identity may vary when gender and gift recipient differ by product category. Recommendations for future research are discussed.

  • This study investigated hypothesized relationships between three personality traits, as defined by PEN model (Psychoticism, Extraversion and Neuroticism), and individual media dependency. The basic idea of the study was that individuals' goals are related to active media use, and the goals will be different based on differences in individuals' personality types. In addition, this study attempted to find whether there are gender difference in constructing media dependency relations with the media. The study was conducted online and the total number of participants was 337 (158 male and 179 female). Correlation analyses indicated no relationship between the extraversion and any of the IMD media use categories. Lower levels of psychoticism were related to a greater likelihood of utilizing the media in an effort to obtain self understanding and having fun more than higher levels of psychoticism. Individuals with higher levels of neuroticism were significantly more likely to depend on the media for achieving self understanding than those with lower levels of neuroticism. When the variable of participant gender was controlled for, there were different patterns of the relationships between personality types and IMD goals. This study showed that to varying degrees certain personality types are related to the goals individuals seek to fulfill with the media use. The implications of the study were discussed.

  • This study is to examine the causal relationship between adolescents' academic stress and suicidal thoughts via depression and gender differences of causal relationships in each causal paths. The purpose of this study is to suggest some implications based on this analytical results. For this purpose, we conducted interviews using a questionnaire targeting high school students. The analytical results shows that adolescent's academic stress has a significant effects on their depression and suicidal thoughts, and adolescent's depression also has a significant effects on suicidal thoughts. This study suggests some implications based on this results.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze of high school students' metacognition and scientific attitude according to gender and academic track. Also it was to investigate relationship between metacognition and scientific attitude. Data were gathered through questionnaires of 220 high school students. In the result of analysis on metacognition according to gender, the mean of male group was higher than the score of female group. The result of t-test wasn't showed statistically significant difference of two groups. In analysis on metacognition according to academic track, the score of science track students were higher than its liberal art track. And the difference between two groups was significant. The result of analysis on scientific attitude according to gender showed no difference between male group and female group. But there was significant difference between two groups in analysis on scientific attitude according to academic track. Also there was high correlation between sub-elements of metacognition and scientific attitude. The result of multiple regression analysis revealed the influence of moniter, regulation, criticism and openness. The results of this study can be utilized as basic data to develop teaching-learning strategy for cultivating high school students' metacognition and scientific attitude. Follow-up studies are needed for analyzing the relations of factors on science learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between moral sensitivity for topics related to science and preference for science, and belief about learning science. 129 middle school students were involved in this study and completed questionnaires to measure moral sensitivity for topics related to science, preference for science, and belief about learning science. Students' responses were analysed to show the distribution of variables and the correlation between variables by gender and grade. As a result, moral sensitivity was not affected by respondents' grades and genders, but was affected by different topics. Preference for science was not affected by respondents' grades and genders, while belief about learning science was not affected by respondents' genders but affected by lower grade. There were correlations between students' moral sensitivity and preference in case of female students and higher grades, as well as relationship between moral sensitivity and belief about learning science. This result infers that students who have higher moral sensitivity can prefer science and show more positive belief about learning science. Also, it can implicate that affective domain including interest or belief can play an important role in the context of science education focusing on moral aspect or ethics, and that teachers should be aware of personal differences in case of teaching moral aspect of science.

  • The purpose of this study is to conduct a meta-analysis of the research studies between the year 2000 and 2013 on the gender difference of the subjective-welling of Korean older adults. 74 research studies that meet the criteria are analyzed with SPSS and Meta-analysis macros. Results indicated that Korean elder men are better off in terms of subjective well-being (es = .1157, CI95% .0528-.1787) than women. No moderating effects are found. Few studies examined the interaction between the gender difference effect and main factors such as health and social relationship that affect subjective well-being. Based on the results some implications for future research are discussed.

  • Gender classification techniques have received a lot of attention from researchers because they can be used in various fields such as forensics, surveillance systems, and demographic studies. As previous studies have shown that there are distinctive features between male and female gait, various techniques have been proposed to classify gender from three dimensional(3-D) gait data. However, some of the gait features extracted from 3-D gait data using existing techniques are similar or redundant to each other or do not help in gender classification. In this study, we propose a method to select features that are useful for gender classification using a correlation-based feature selection technique. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed feature selection technique, we compare the performance of gender classification models before and after applying the proposed feature selection technique using a 3-D gait dataset available on the Internet. Eight machine learning algorithms applicable to binary classification problems were utilized in the experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed feature selection technique can reduce the number of features by 22, from 82 to 60, while maintaining the gender classification performance.
