The major distress types in the domestic asphalt pavement are fatigue cracking, reflection cracking, thermal cracking, and rutting. To decrease the pavement distress by reinforcing asphalt pavement with reinforcement interlayer in geosynthetics to the traditional pavement systems can improve these problems. This study conducted laboratory test with asphalt pavement reinforced by glass fiber sheet to fix systematically geosynthetic asphalt pavement system. Laboratory tests like wheel tracking test and crack resistance test are conducted to analyze the controlling effect of glass fiber sheet on cracking and rutting of asphalt pavement.

Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests were performed to evaluate the structural capacity of glass fiber reinforced (GFR), polymer modified (PM), and unmodified asphalt pavement in Korea-LTPP (Long Term Pavement Performance) section. FWD tests showed that the tensile strains of GFR and PM asphalt pavements at the bottom of asphalt layer were 29% and 21% less than that of unmodified asphalt pavement. The structural capacity was then used as a performance criterion for calculating the cost effect of GFR and PM asphalt pavements. From the results, 5cm of asphalt layer thickness was reduced by applying GFR asphalt, and 3cm by applying PM asphalt. However, construction cost of PM and GFR asphalt pavement were increased due to the higher GFR and PM asphalt price. Life cycle cost analysis showed that the initial construction cost of GFR and PM asphalt pavement were higher but the management and user cost were less than those of unmodified asphalt pavement.
In Korea-LTPP(Long Tenn Pavement Performance) project, the full depth asphalt pavement test sections are constructed on the national highway to evaluate the structural capacity of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber. Truck loading test and FWD test were performed to measure the structural capacity of test sections. Test results showed that the reinforcement of glass fiber installed at between surface and intermediate asphalt layer decreased the strain at the bottom of surface layer and moved up the stress neutral axis in asphalt layer. As a result, the tensile stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of reinforced asphalt pavement, while the compressive stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of unreinforced asphalt pavement. On the other hand, the tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt base layer didn't show a difference between glass fiber reinforced and unreinforced pavements. From the FWD test, it was shown that the surface deflection of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber decreased 24 percents comparing to that of unreinforced asphalt pavement. This shows that the reinforcement with glass fiber appears to improve the rutting resistance of asphalt pavement.
Geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement is a pavement type applicable to overlay for repair in addition to new construction. The geosynthetic materials are placed between the asphalt layers to stop or delay propagation of the cracking existing at lower layers and to reduce the rutting. In this study, the cracking, rutting, IRI, and deflection were investigated to compare the performance between geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement and ordinary or polymer modified asphalt pavement. Based on field conditions, the 11 sections were classified into 3 groups; sections proper to compare, sections with restrictions to compare, sections with difficulties in comparing, and the data was statistically analyzed. Larger resistance to rutting and increased IRI were measured at the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavement sections comparing to the ordinary or polymer modified asphalt pavement sections. However, the deflections of the pavements were similar and the resistance to the cracking could not be compared because of short pavement lives.
This paper presents the performance evaluation of asphalt pavement reinforced with fiber sheet type of geosynthetics and observations conducted to evaluate the practical efficiencies and performance of overlay asphalt pavement reinforced with geosynthetics. In this study, performance evaluation were performed for the six section of construction site. The performance indcators of asphalt pavement reinforced with geosynthetics has been collected Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN), Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and have been analyzed for rutting, cracking ratio, falling weight and international roughness index. As a result of performance evaluations, geosynthetics reinforced asphalt pavement is sigficant effect on increasing a cracking resistance than the non-reinfroced asphalt pavement, also rutting and crak is slowly increase as incerasingly performance period.

Test constructions were performed at 3 sites to investigate ways for maximizing performance of geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements known to reduce reflection cracking and rutting. Problems during construction operation which can affect bonding shear strength of the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements were defined and the construction conditions were intentionally made during the test constructions. Both immediately and 1year after the test constructions, cores were obtained from positions with good and bad construction conditions and then bonding shear strength tests were performed to be compared each other. Rules to be kept at construction sites were suggested to improve performance of the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements.

The asphalt concrete pavement takes various advantages of better riding quality, serviceability and easier maintenance. At the same time, it addresses a weak point of the premature failures due to rapid increasement of traffic volume, heavy vehicles and high temperature in summer. It increases the expenditure of maintenance and repair. In order to improve the performance of asphalt pavement avoiding this premature failure, the use reinforcements with geosynthetics have been considered. Geosynthetics are known as an effective reinforcement to restrain fatigue and reflective cracks in asphalt pavements. In this study, a comprehensive parametric study is conducted to capture the efficiency of geosynthetic-reinforcements using viscoelastic properties of the asphalt concrete(AC) layer. The investigated parameters were reinforcement location, AC layer thickness, temperature distribution across the AC layer and modulus of AC and base layer. As a result of observations, that reinforced asphalt concrete could be used effectively for improving resistance against fatigue cracks and permanent deformation. Especially, when a geogrid was placed at the interface between the asphaltic base and the subbase, tensile stress in the horizontal direction was significantly reduced.
The major pavement distress types found in the domestic roadways include rutting, fatigue cracking, and reflection cracking which are results of the environment and repeated traffic loads. These distresses usually occur before pavements approach their design life, and therefore, a significant amount of national budget is spent for maintenance of roadway pavements. The purpose of this study is to establish a geosynthetics-asphalt pavement system. For the study, wheel tracking tests are conducted to analyze the controlling effect of geosynthetics on rutting of asphalt pavement. On the basis of these works, the reinforcement effect of geosynthetics on the rutting of the asphalt pavement is clarified and deformation characteristics of geosynthetics-asphalt mixture is examined.
Even though a lot of laboratory and field tests for asphalt pavements using geosynthetics have been conducted recently, any rational and systematic analysis for the economic efficiency of the asphalt pavement systems reinforced by using geosynthetics has not been proposed yet. In this study, the economic analysis considering the traffic characteristics for the glass fiber sheet reinforced asphalt pavement was performed using the Life Cycle Cost Analysis(LCCA) which is commonly used for the economic analysis technique. The economic efficiency for the glass fiber sheet reinforcement and the traffic characteristics was examined by applying the test results from the literature review to the economic analysis model.
