Linear composite theory as well as a finite element program is developed for axisymmetric elastomeric bearings. This study is limited to axisymmetrically loaded horizontal layered systems with linear, elastic, small' deformation conditions. A multiscale method is used in the development of the composite theory which enables us to model inhomogeneous layered composites as equivalent homogeneous, orthotropic material. Only continuity of the prime variables is required for the finite element analysis, allowing the use of simple $C_o$ elements whereas rather complicated theories presented in the past need more requirements. Four node isoparametric elements are used in the study. The developed theory of this paper is limited to linear conditions, however, the analysis can be extended to nonlinear behavior of flexible material in elastomeric bearing by using multiscale method presented here. Two numerical examples are examined and compared to the results of discrete and previously obtained composite analysis to verify the theory.

Spatial structure is an appropriate shape that resists external force only with in-plane forte by reducing the influence of bending moment, and it maximizes the effectiveness of structure system. the spatial structure should be analyzed by nonlinear analysis regardless static and dynamic analysis because it accompanys large deflection for member. To analyze the spatial structure geometrical and material nonlinearity should be considered in the analysis. In this paper, a geometrically nonlinear finite element model for plane truss structures is developed, and material nonlinearity is also included in the analysis. Arc-length method is used to solve the nonlinear finite element model. It is found that the present analysis predicts accurate nonlinear behavior of plane truss.
Power transmission shafts in rotary wing aircraft use a hollow shaft to reduce weight. We can apply linear elastic fracture mechanics to predict crack propagation behavior. This paper predicted crack growth life of a hollow shaft with a circumferential through-type crack by finite element analysis. A 2D finite element model was created by applying a torsion and forming elements considering cracks. We defined the initial crack length and performed the finite element analysis by increasing the crack length to derive stress intensity factor at crack tips. We defined the length just prior to the stress intensity factor exceeding the fracture toughness as the crack limit length. We calculated the crack limit length using a handbook and numerically integrated the crack growth rate equation to derive growth life of each crack. The growth life of each crack was compared to verify the proposed finite element analysis method.

Inelastic nonlinear behavior of a hyperbolic cooling tower under wind loading is studied using a finite element program developed on a Cray Y-MP. Convergence studies for the elastic and inelastic analyses are performed using three mesh models. It is shown that the mesh convergence plays an important role in accurately predicting the inelastic behavior of a cooling tower. Even though the cooling tower resists the applied forces through membrane stresses, it is found that the bending stresses play an important role in the failure and behavior of the cooling tower. The present analysis gives a shape factor of 1.48, which indicates a significant redistribution of meridional stresses. It is further evidenced by the distribution of meridional reinforcement yielding which reaches up to $30^{\circ}$ from the windward meridian. The present practice of using elastic analysis for calculating the design stresses appears to be at least safe and conservative. A more comprehensive study should lead to conclusions that would allow use of a higher-than-one shape factor, thus requiring less meridional reinforcement than the present design method does.
This study presented 3D Finite Element (FE) analysis of curved beam structures subjected to static and dynamic loading conditions, which is particularly strong ground motions. It was shown that the results obtained from 3D FE analyses was similar to the theoretical solution within 1% convergency error, in order to validate the 3D solid FE models in this study. In particular, it was focusing on development of dynamic characteristics of curved beam structures subjected to three-different seismic ground motions: GyeongJu, Lomaprieta and Northridge earthquakes. Consequently, It was interesting to find that the results obtained from GyeongJu earthquake was detuned due to high frequency effect, but the Von-Mises of the curved beam structure under Lomaprieta earthquake was 647.824 MPa at 45 curvature degree.
A new path independent contour integral formulus for the distinct calculation of mode I stress intensity factors in two dimensional linear elastic fracture mechanics problems is presented. This method is based on p-convergence concepts and can be easily appended to existing finite element computer codes. In this study, the stress state at crack tip has been investigated and the path independence of J-integral values has been tested with respect to different contours expressed by normalized distance apart from the crack tip. Numerical results by p-convergence for the problems such as centrally cracked panels, single and double edged cracks in rectangular panels have been compared with those by the conventional h-convergence. The comparison demonstrates the accuracy and stability of the proposed method.

An efficient numerical procedure for material and geometric nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shells under monotonically increasing loads through their elastic, inelastic and ultimate load ranges is developed by using the finite element method. The 8-node Serendipity isoparametric element developed by the degeneration approach including the transverse shear deformation is used. A layered approach is used to represent the steel reinforcement and to discretize the concrete behavior through the thickness. The total Lagrangian formulation based upon the simplified Von Karman strain expressions is used to take into account the geometric nonlinearity of the structure. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and a model for reinforcement in the concrete; and also a so-called smeared crack model is incorporated. The steel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modelled as a smeared layer of equivalent thickness. This method will be verified a useful tool to account for geometric and material nonlinearities in detailed analysis of reinforced concrete concrete shells of general form through numerical examples of the sequential paper( ).

The dynamic behavior of the marine cable is essentially nonlinear and dominated by geometric nonlinearity. Furthermore, fluid drag force makes the problem more complex and difficult. Therefore, it has certain limitations to obtain the dynamic behavior of the marine cable by analytical method. The purpose of this paper is to apply the elastic catenary cable element to the problem of under water cable including the hydrodynamic effects of fluids. The static and dynamic formulations for the three-dimensional elastic catenary coble under water effects are derived and the finite element analysis procedures are presented. In the analysis, the hydrodynamic forces are modeled by modified Morison equation. A comparison of the results obtained using present method with previously published results showed the validity of present method. The dynamic behavior of the marine cable subjected to current is investigated using present method and it can be illustrated that the dynamic behavior of the marine cable subjected to current varies with the incident angle of the current and inclined angle of the cable.

The mixed convolved action principle provides a new rigorous weak variational formalism for a broad range of initial boundary value problems in mathematical physics and mechanics in terms of mixed formulation, convolution, and fractional calculus. In this paper, its potential in the development of numerical methods for transient problems in various dynamical systems when adopting temporally second order approximation is investigated. For this, the classical single-degree-of-freedom linear elastic dynamical systems are primarily considered to investigate computational characteristics of the developed algorithms. For the undamped system, all the developed algorithms are symplectic with respect to the time step. For the damped system, they are shown to be accurate with good convergence characteristics.

A nonlinear formulation of a beam finite element(NB6) on the total Lagrangian mode for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of two-dimensional elastic framed structures is presented. The NB6 beam element has been degenerated from the three-dimensional continuum by introducing the deep beam assumptions and consists of three reference nodes and three relative nodes. The element characteristics are derived by discretizing the beam equations of motion using the Galerkin weighted residual method and are reduced-integrated repeatedly for each loading step by the Newton-Raphson iteration techpique. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and versatility of the proposed nonlinear NB6 beam element.
